World of Warcraft Dungeons and Raids

World of Warcraft Dungeons and Raids

While much of the World of Warcraft buzz around BlizzCon has thus far been focused on the pandaren race, monk class, and talent system overhaul, there remains the question: what are you going to do with all of it?

The World of Warcraft Dungeons and Raids panel recently kicked off to answer that very question. Who are the big bad guys you need to kill, and where can you kill them?

Three new dungeons were shown out of the nine total planned in the initial release of the expansion, starting with Temple of the Jade Serpent, the first dungeon you’ll encounter while leveling from 85 to 90. In this dungeon you’ll be tasked with defeating the Sha of Doubt, one of the elemental enemies threatening the shrouded continent and sacred pandaren ways.

The second dungeon previewed was the Stormstout Brewery. Chen Stormstout of WarCraft III fame is a revered figure within Pandaren culture, and his brewery has been overrun by the Verming and Hozu, a couple of the less-than-savory races that also inhabit Pandaria. You’re tasked with reclaiming his family heritage… and his beer.

The third dungeon previewed at BlizzCon was the Shado-pan Monastery. Located in Kun-Lai Summit, this mountain retreat serves as the home and training grounds of the mysterious Shado-pan Clan, a ninja-like Pandaren faction dedicated to protecting Pandaria. Again, the Sha have been set free and threaten the Shado-pan’s base of operations, and you’re tasked with dispatching them.

In addition to the three new dungeons that were shown, two classic dungeon crawls are getting the Deadmines treatment and will return in level-90 Heroic fashion. While they'll still be accessible in their lower-level form for those leveling their new pandaren, both Scarlet Monastery and Scholomance will be buffed up, spit-shined, and made relevant to max-level characters with new, challenging encounters and equally high-level drops. Scholomance is returning with a more streamlined layout and The Scarlet Monastery, too big to return as one dungeon, is being split up into two wings. The Graveyard and Cathedral are being combined into one level-90 Heroic dungeon, and the Library and Armory into another. Whitemane's Chapeau for everyone!

Are you yawning at the idea of more five-player dungeons? You may be interested in Challenges. This is a new time trial system coming in Mists of Pandaria for level-90 dungeons. The challenge itself may not always be difficult, but ranking will be. Do well and you'll earn a bronze, silver, or gold medal. Completing the Challenge on gold will incur a stacking debuff on future attempts: it’ll start with a 5% debuff, but if you manage to finish with a gold medal time on that run you’ll receive a 10% debuff on your next run, and so on.

In addition to realm-wide bragging rights, completing Challenges will award you with unique Transmogrification items and other vanity rewards. Oh, did we forget to mention that your gear will be normalized? Sorry, no gearing up or stacking items to get the best times — your item level will be normalized so that even when the next raid encounter comes out and new gear drops, your world-record will stand until some other group of chumps actually has the skill to beat it.

Challenges will be enabled during any dungeon run that supports them, including those joined through the Dungeon Finder. To help get people together that are looking to achieve the same goals, a special flag will be available to only match you with others looking to do Challenges if you do use the Dungeon Finder.

One of the three new raids launching with Mists of Pandaria was also unveiled: Mogu’Shan Palace. This six-boss raid is located in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and invites you to explore the hidden secrets of the elusive Mogu empire, one of the new indigenous Pandarian races.

In Cataclysm, Heroic dungeons were intentionally designed as gear and difficulty checks on the progression to raiding. In Mists of Pandaria, the Raid Finder will be the appropriate transition from running dungeons to Normal raids. Heroic dungeons will largely be tuned to be about as difficult as they were in Wrath of the Lich King, allowing players to fairly quickly down bosses in PUGs and hit their Valor Point caps. Valor Points will follow a new philosophy with 4.3, as a parallel way to gear up alongside the Raid Finder, but not as a fill-in for boss drops.

The overall goal for this expansion is that any time you log in, you should be able to make some kind of progress on your character. Whether that's through Normal or Heroic raiding, queuing for a Raid Finder run, hitting dailies for rewards and VP, busting out a scenario with some strangers, or joining some buddies for a dungeon Challenge, we want you to be making meaningful progression on your character. Some ways will be faster than others, but no matter what you choose to do, you'll be making progress.

The goals for dungeons and raids in Mists of Pandaria are to create epic and challenging experiences, but Cataclysm also helped us learn where we can improve with the new expansion. The Raid Finder will help with taking that first step into endgame content, and it will be available for all Mists of Pandaria raids. Beyond that, we want to create more easily understandable encounters and move away from mechanics that simply set up groups to fail, while still keeping them challenging.

We’re also looking to address some of the issues that came with how the zones and locations were spread out in Cataclysm. While that’s largely addressed with Pandaria simply being one continent, it also includes giving dungeons and raids more of a presence in the world. All of the dungeons and raids in Pandaria exist as actual locations you can walk up to and fly over, and aren’t just encapsulated experiences hidden behind a portal.

If you’d like to watch the panel, you can replay the recording in its entirety with a Virtual Ticket.

I don't mind Pandas as a race at all, I think it's a good idea, but the difficulty change is starting to get to be too much. I loved BC and Vanilla where you had to work your !@# off to make something of your character, get some friends and not just mindlessly spam the Queue for Heroic button. The fact that you now do easier raids to gear for raids is just really, really silly.

I wouldn't of worked hard back in BC with my guild to kill Kael'Thas in Tempest Keep if I'd of already seen the entire raid on an easier setting. I never even saw Black Temple until Wrath. It seems the days of being excited to raid are gone.

All of the people argueing - An online game with expansions every so often will always have an end. Every online game has an end. You cant go from level 60 up to level 85 and not expect things to change. Its hard to bring new ideas, raids and factions into a game as it will soon come to a stop or the story of the game will die. I dont think this will go down well, my account runs out in 6days time and im just starting to get back into WoW, but i doubt ill be playing this expansion

don't be fool everybody. guys, we all know that unfortunately the true spirit of world of warcraft died with the lich king. with arthas, blizzard reached the maximum of the beauty, about story and characters. Now i cannot think about the good old days, and live the present with a focking black and white bear. It's just like being widow of a celebrit star, and being re-married with a focking monsters :S

This is a fantasy game...just a game..if they ad beetles with wings which can be pandas...no big deal.....while there are such great factors in the coming expansion like those beautiful talents and new class+race..
why some think that they can hel themseves to be mature by just insulting others and telling that"oh thats for kids".
as a whole the game is 12+.read if you cant..and at 29 with all the books read and all the WC games played i think that WARCRAFT is the best thing that could ever happen in the world of gaming.
for people who wanna quit>>cya when you come back and level a panda
dont be kids if you think your not

personally i think congratulations are in order for blizzard they have made a new amaizing looking expansion witch fits into the time manor and placement of the area but i digret like the others who posted i dont think a expansion about the pandaren race (witch may i add was originally an aprils fools joke) will turn that great it would be great to see and play in that area but a whole new race and only that place i think what we are looking at is for that to become an area within the expansion and for them to not be a race playable by either side as there is nothing that sperates them from alliance or horde they are like a neutral party who have had no obligation throughout and as they can be obtained as a pet there is no real reason for them to be horde or alliance therefore they should be the race that the expansion revolves around but mabye 2 difference animals of chinese legends like tiger..man...things and stuff like that

OMG you are all a bunch of immature kids who want to play with cuddly pandas, and any Muppet that thinks that that pandas are worth a whole expansion compared to their tiny part in wow's history should be shot. I won’t be playing wow anymore neither will whole guilds that I know hundreds and hundreds are quitting wow now maybe blizzard will wake up smell the Kodo poop that such a huge fail as well as all the other fails just can’t be ignored anymore.

I’m not a kid and don’t want to play kid games I want challenging, dark game content, you can guarantee that Diablo 3 will be everything wow should be.

I can’t get over that blizzard has ruined such an awesome game. Blizzard should give up making games just because all they do is ruin perfectly good content, your supposed to add to good content not change it and ruin it beyond the point of saving it and I hope that people will realise this before they waste too much of there life and sanity stuck up a panda’s behind!

@Faegan: Lol you are really someone who know nothing about Wow's history...First of all..in warcraft I there is a player named pandamonioum..and he is saying every 5 seconds. For Pandaria.. So. as you know that warcraft is the history of wow.. and is previous from wow.. you would know that this panda had to be from the start in the game..!!!!!!!! but you only know about the game and not its history...

@Helheim: It's not so much Pandaren is the main issue. I for one think it's quite cool to have them in. But a whole expansion based around what started as an April Fools joke?? Come on!

Add in the pokemon battles, retard-proof talent system and effectively Blizz telling you when and where to push every button now and I find myself struggling to get the motivation up for this. I like having some distinction between bad players and good players, if I fail at something then I want to get better, not have the game dumbed down so I can just smash my face against the keyboard. Take away thinking, researching and practicing and all you get is World of Grindfest....not my cup of tea.

And let's not forget SWTOR is due out soon which promises actual levelling play rather than grinding, storyline rather than rediculous lore overlooked in favour of yet more griding to level fast and hopefully some actual skill required to play....not to mention graphics that look like they belong in 2011/12. WoW has been great don't get me wrong, but I just feel it's time is almost up and other MMO's are showing what things should be like.....I think most play WoW still out of habit and out of not wanting to throw away so much time /played rather than out of enjoying the game anymore :)

@Atheriel: Absolutely right, people are scared to try a new game as they dont want to start at the bottom again. Not only that, but WoW has an advantage that you can play it on crappy computers, whereas newer MMO games have more tech requirements.

Well you really think Blizzard cares about those few haters? Ofc not they got 10 million other people who still likes the game. So screw those haters. I will buy this expansion for sure it looks very good. I only hope they will also raise the character cap on a server, cuz i have 10 now....
Why would pandas be for kids? If it would like a cute teddy bear i would understand, but it is actually not a panda but a pandarian. It looks like a panda but it isn't and it's surely not for kiddies like some say here.
Cataclysm was a very good progress for WOW and you still need to have brains ( alot) I can only say it is harder now then before ( Wotlk was easy)
If you don't like it then don't buy it , don't play it. No 1 will ever care, they only care for those (about 10 million) who like it.

@Winnetrie: Mate, the only reason you thought it was easy is because Blizzard made it easy so people like you would think it was great. When you did heroics on TBC, if you could fight 2 mobs at once you were hard as nails. If someone broke CC on a mob, it was usually a wipe. Thats hard. The content now is a joke in comparison, aimed at children so they dont get annoyed and ragequit. I mean its obvious, they bring out some content, leave it for a couple of months, then bring some easy way out of getting geared, ie new heroics or badge items. Its like, whats the point? Theres no reward for being good at the game. They need to grow some balls and just say, right, here is the hard stuff take it or leave it.
