World of Warcraft Class Talent System

World of Warcraft Class Talent System

World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton, and Lead Systems Designer Greg Street took to the stage this morning to discuss the direction of class balance for World of Warcraft, as well as the new talent system coming in Mists of Pandaria. Their panel focused on the philosophies and goals of this new system, what’s changing, and what expectations players should have as they level up in Pandaria and beyond.

Philosophies and Goals

In Cataclysm, we made some pretty radical adjustments to the talent trees. Some of those changes worked out really well, while others didn't really help us achieve the goals we set out to reach. We really liked offering players a choice of class specialization at level 10, for example, and how streamlining each of the talent trees made room for meaningful choices and greater character customization. We didn't like that there was still a lot of "bulk" left in the talent trees despite our clean-up efforts, though, and that it remained possible for players to "miss" really important performance talents. Looking back, we feel that the Cataclysm talent trees are roughly 80% composed of class role-defining talents that are crucial to rotations and performance, while the other 20% are interesting utility talents, and that's where the real choices were happening.

For Mists of Pandaria, we want to move toward something that feels more flexible, yet eliminates many of the flaws of the old system at the same time. More importantly, we want players to gain access to important class performance abilities easily while ensuring that the more engaging utility abilities, where all the choices a player makes are meaningful, are front and center. Getting there will take some major changes.

The New Class Talent System

Perhaps the most exciting of these changes is the removal of the old talent tree system. Rather than each class having three separate trees, one for each specialization, players will now choose talents from individual sets which are awarded every 15 levels. Each class will have its own selection of talents, and the entire list will be available to all characters of that class regardless of  specialization.

Each talent set is comprised of three talents which fall into a clear "theme." Some sets will offer utility such as movement speed increases and boosts to survivability, while others will reduce the costs of certain situational abilities. Currently, the goal is to avoid making any particular talent mandatory or to have them play a role in ability rotations directly. Instead, they're intended to give players interesting ways to customize their characters according to their preferred playstyle.

In total, there will be six talent sets, with players unlocking a new set every 15 levels. This means that there will be fewer talents overall, but each talent you choose has the potential to have a much more dramatic effect on your gameplay.

Examples of possible talents for paladins in Mists of Pandaria

Another big change being made is how talents are selected. Instead of "purchasing" talents with a predetermined number of points (earned as you level), talent selection will be toggle-based. For each set of three talents players unlock, they will get to choose one talent to activate, for a total of six active talents at level 90. (Talent ranks have been completely removed.)

Similar to current functionality, talents selections will be finalized by clicking "Learn" at the bottom of the talent pane; however, a big benefit of removing talent points is that it allows us to let players "re-talent" with more flexibility. Even after players have activated their talents, they won't be completely locked into their choices as they are now. If at any point a player feels that another talent may be more appropriate or fun, he or she can simply select that talent from their tree and click "Learn" again. This can be done on a talent-by-talent basis or, if the situation demands it, all talents can be changed out at once.

As a result, talents can be changed out when switching specs, as well as when running dungeons, raids, and battlegrounds. While re-talenting will most likely be disabled during combat and will incur a small fee (either in the form of gold or a reagent), it will still give players more opportunities to adapt their characters to better meet the challenges they expect to face while playing.

Class Talents vs. Specialization Abilities

So what does this mean for important spec-based spells and abilities like Hammer of the Righteous and Circle of Healing?

At level 10, players will still select a specialization and unlock an iconic class specialization ability. As players level up, they will then automatically learn both class-based and specialization-specific abilities at set intervals. The specialization abilities you learn will be largely comprised of old talents we feel players should have, as well as core class abilities that not every spec needs.

For example, for a level 25 Protection paladin, his or her training list may look a little something like this:

Level 10: Avenger's Shield (Protection ability)
Judgments of the Wise (Protection ability)
Level 12: Rightous Fury (Class ability)
Level 13: Redemption (Class ability)
Level 14: Flash of Light (Class ability)
Level 15: Hand of Reckoning (Class ability)
Level 16: Lay on Hands (Class ability)
Level 18: Divine Shield (Class ability)
Level 20: Hammer of the Righteous (Protection ability)
Level 22: Supplication (Class ability)
Level 24: Consecration (Class ability)

These spells and abilities will be trained in the field, appearing immediately in players' spellbooks once they reach the appropriate level. As a result, there will no longer be a need to visit class trainers save to re-spec or purchase Dual Specialization, keeping players engaged and doing what they enjoy.

With this new method of distributing abilities, we can ensure that players are receiving role-defining talents at levels that make sense and will benefit them the most as well as deliver fun and meaningful choices along the way.

Be sure to visit or tune in to the World of Warcraft Classes/Items/Professions Q&A tomorrow at 22:00 CEST in Hall D of the Anaheim Convention Center to learn more about the direction we’re taking with class balance in Mists of Pandaria.

Can't wait to see how badly you even out the classes in this expansion. Could you be able to manage to make some classes even more OP then rogues and ferals are now?

Hmm i am sure what to think of this yet, i like that i will get more skills and spells, but i also like the current talent tree. And i am unsure if a talent every 15 levels is something i want for my lower lvl chars. I like the choices they give u every 15 levels. SV hunter with Silencing Shot is very nice.

Looks interesting, but I wonder how this will affect the relatively Op and new Dks... Monks look awesome, so will probs roll one of those. Alliance panda or Horde Panda? I have visions of horde ones spraying spit and roaring like they have some disease whilst the alliance ones acting all ancient "monkish". ^.^ Off to do some of the new dungeons now, queue time takes forever!

To all thos who say vanilla and tbc was better, I agree to some extent but think alittle about not only the good parts but the bad parts, the super slow leveling, the no 60% mounts untill lvl 40 and that you have to walk to every dungeon to get into them, I'm sure if they did that again people would rage, I remember how people even thos who love vanilla raged that you had to discover the Cata dungeons before you could queue for them. I agree Vanilla and TBC was better but I still think some of the things they've changed is for the better, I do however think the changing of the difficulty of the dungeons and quests is a bit boring.

hi all, iv been a hardcore wow player for years (10-11) the things that i think wow have lost if the complexity of the talent trees and the feeling you get after doing a raid that i near impossible. Now adays you can run around like a headless chicken and some how a healer can keep you alive. I do like some of the changes that blizz are made and i do agree with some ppl that this game has been made more for the younger generation than for us 20+ (me being 28) :-D so anyways blizz think of the older generation and make the game more darker, more.... antipitation!! and if your worried about kids then do what you do with your expansions, if there not the appropriate age then block it off or zone it out as they say!? like parental controls on wow? p.s bring back the 51 point talent trees or 81 in the next expansion and let us go all out on then because i use to love getting my talent tree to the way i like it, not forced into picking the best one (choices please!!!!) thanks all for reading and sorry for any spelling mistakes ( havent bothered checking for them)

:D I agree theres that extra challenge in picking a set of talents that best suit you. I aswell feel that WoW is becoming a brainless run around. Finding a skilled player is getting harder to find due to every class getting less options making them instantly useable. Seems like anyone can make a character now and no matter what they do they get it right first time, as a result we get awesome healers or Dps that can put out the figures until a boss casts an AoE effect on them and they stand there saying to themselves "This is pretty.... OH MY GOD why am I dead"

P.S with this being WoW's 7th anniversary how did you manage to be a hardcore WoW player for the last 10-11 yrs? @Wildness:

The game is probably easy because the most subscribers like easy.
Blizzard just does what a company have to do. And that is to please the majority of subscribers.

BUT, I do agree there should be more challenging dungeons, quests. We are starting to lose the MMO aspect here. Only aspect of an MMO is when you group up for a dungeon and/or a raid.

Good work blizzard, please do not pay attention to all this negativity. I have enjoyed the game for a long time and like everything you have tried to accomplish. It is great to be able to have a more personally customized character, like we have seen in diablo 2 (hopefully 3 as well). Thanks a lot for all the great times!!

I'm not afraid to admit i'm a bit new, I've played for about a year i think, i've lost track of time, because i enjoy the interaction with my friends. I understand people won't like Pandas. Just don't play them. And you don't want pet battles, well... Don't Duel then. Look, I haven't played that long and I think some of the higher level dungeons aren't as difficult as I was led to believe before i got into it, but you have to make allowences for people who want to join in with there friends, how can they do that if they can't get their characters to there friends lv. If you don't like some new stuff then don't play it. It's not what the whole game is going to be about, it's adding to an already playable and enjoyable world. as for the talent trees, well i'm willing to give it a go, I wonder if perhaps it could be modified a bit like Diablo 2, Building multiple points into your fav skills. This would make one character vastly different from another and really help define your role, well it's just my opinion. I like the idea someone mentioned about a Bard, I could see it as a good support class, maybe as a whole new role in dungeons and raids? Necromancer would be one I could enjoy because I find the Deathknights a bit awkward. too much of everything :) or another idea could be to have four or even five talent trees per class, I don't feel unique if I see another Feral Druid or Destruction Warlock. It's just a few Ideas, Think when you want guys but i'll at least give it a go before making my mind up.

@Fowari: The people dont mind not playing panda's the problem is that they wanted something more... Enjoyable. Maybe something like a Giant or and Ogre. I like your Idea about the 4 or 5 talents though. Looks awesome! Also the other problem people are having is that the game has become easy. You can now take on an Elite quest alone. Wich is making people dissatisfied with the amount of challenge in the game itself.

See i read most of the first pages comments. Alot of people say they like it... Others say they hate it. Now basically i agreed with what both had to say. I agreed with the fact that the talents and the "pet battle system" is for children. To be honest i would prefer something more vast than just a "every 15 level" talent. Come on Blizzard. Now then for the other comments, The panda's are awesome even though i would like to add that yeah everyone is like "King fu Panda" but if you followed Warcraft you would know its been there for ages. Also i would like something more Brutal. Lets say a race like Ogre or a Giant. A panda isnt exactly something that makes you say "OMFG run!" But sofar Blizzard i will buy the expantion but doubt i will play it as a regular Basis. TBC and WOTLK was awesome but now... Its getting weird.

Well, firstly. !@#$ all the haters, I think Pandas will look pretty cool, + the new class monk, Make the game more interesting. I for one will be hitting that up straight away in an on-going battle to level to 90. This expansion sounds awesome, and who-ever leaves WoW. Good riddance, we may actually have some decent raiders.

Im Glad so many of you all will be leaving. Then perhaps we can get some descent players in the raids and dungeons again, and not just idiotic obnoxious punks all the time...

And i'll venture to say 90% of you all complaining did the same with Wrath and Cata anyway, and still bought it, and will buy Pandaria because there still isnt a MMO to touch WOW settled in the market.

I might quit just because of all the people moaning. Its a game and your complaining like tax's and gas/petrol just went up. god, 5million+ with different opinions if any of you were smart enough to spell firstly then secondly realise that you can't please everyone then you wouldn't all be moaning on here, which by the way, is not how to tell Blizzard your opinion.

@Krytan: Dont you just love players who think , because you type too fast without checking your spelling. Automaticcaly means whatever you say , should be ignored and dismissed. That kind of argument just hits under the belt. Especially when alot of the player on "english" server arent from the UK at all.

i didn't play wow in the old days but when i got the hang of it i enjoyed the game, the game it's self was a challenge, but now it seems it's just too easy i understand that pandaria is in the story line but it just seems so childish, yes im complaining but i will try it, i still have lots to learn about the game but even i can see that the new talents just take the biscuit, i like pvp the most but even for someone like me with hardly any knowledge its easy to do talents and get good pvp gear. sorry for poor grammer and spelling ^^.
