StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Panel

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Panel

Matt Morris and Brian Kindregan from the StarCraft II development team took the stage today along with Chris Metzen, senior vice president of story and franchise development, to unveil the latest developments in the upcoming expansion.

The panel kicked off with a brief overview of Wings of Liberty, discussing the story and where it left off: Raynor and Sarah reunited, with Mengsk crawling back to the shadows, his plan temporarily thwarted. We know Kerrigan is once again on the warpath in Heart of the Swarm, attempting to reassemble her brood, but "why?" is to remain a mystery until the game is released.

While many of the Heart of the Swarm campaign mechanics were originally announced back in May, much of the panel today focused on where the game has progressed since those details were unveiled. The time since the initial announcement has been spent crafting new and unique mission mechanics with even more impressive, interactive, and mind-boggling features in the planned 20+ missions.

As you control Kerrigan and rebuild her brood, it will be up to you to decide how to evolve your fighting force. While standard army mutations (upgrades like those in Wings of Liberty) will unlock at key points throughout the game, you’ll also be presented with evolution choices that will take you to remote locations to obtain the genetic code needed to advance.

In one example, the zergling is given a choice to evolve one of two ways. In your first choice, you go to attack indigenous leaping creatures and harvest their DNA. By integrating the DNA of the indigenous leaping creature, you can modify your zerglings to grow wings and leap as well. For your second choice, you're contacted by a queen on a remote world who wishes to join your brood. She’s evolved her zerglings to hatch rapidly and spawn three zerglings per cocoon, and believes her strain would be of use to you.

Each of these approximately 14 skirmishes will be a short mission that will only take a few minutes to complete, and will present both evolution choices through gameplay, allowing you to test their strengths and ultimately help you pick which genetic code you wish to splice into your own brood.

While you'll be tending to key strategic missions with Kerrigan, the swarm will be rampaging across the sector, and they'll need your guidance. Throughout the campaign your brood mothers will contact you for advice on tactical decisions as they carry out your orders on distant planets. These decisions will also determine how you’ll achieve success, providing you with bonuses to your arsenal and abilities. You’ll also have choices at key points to engage in the ‘Destruction of Worlds’ mechanic, adding a planet’s resources to your own as your swarm pours over its surface.

How will you consume the galaxy?

in my opinion u will be able to custom ur kerrigan....i mean , if u go into the corruption tree u will start looking like Queen of Blades (again...)
if u go into the Psi-Ops tree u will start looking like a ghost.....
if u go....damn i forgot the name of the skill tree , anyway , if u go into all psychonic tree u will be like.....an archon , flying around naked (hope so xD)smashing thors and battlecruisers xD
....customizing ur character makes sence considering how simple the kerrigan design is in the start...

Think you have to remember that blizzard has probably changed significantly since they started developing starcraft. Not always about time, more about how many man hours get spent refining the end product and they probably have a fair few more ppl working for them than they 15 years ago ;]

I think this is happening to fast. It took blizzard so long to develop the first version of Starcraft, which later on got the name Starcraft: Brood War. However, after so many years, Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty came. Now, one and a half year later we get Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm. However, my question is: Are blizzard ready to take a risk?

@NaVi: Well think about how balanced Starcraft was... protoss unit who could stun any building for 3 min. I think they are releaseing this expansion for balancing sc2. It took so long time for Broodwar to come cuz blizzard didnt realy care about balance it in the beginning.

@Beardulon: if you care to think of it, terrans are way more OP than protoss, if I build lets say 100 zealots, you would easily be able to kill me, if I build void rays you would kill them with vikings, I tried mass marines and I got up to rank one in platinum, and if your zerg you only need infestors, as they mave while burrowed, lock things in place and takes control of units.

Protoss units are bad. Will maybe switch race after expansion now... Only thing I kinda liked was the replicator, but really no point when it cant turn into a massive unit. In PvZ we need some anti air against mutas and the muta timing. I hoped that you would fix this in HOTS but still no help to get there =/

@ToaStie: Protoss units are actually lank interesting and versatile. Depending on how the replicants work you can adjust to any incoming attack. If a swarm of air comes you can organise your group of replicants into stalkers and sentries to counter and overwhelm it - if they can replicate into flying units as well then that's even scarier. It means you can customise your army at any time and if they can replicate multiple times well then they're really just amazing. Mass Recall is awesome and lets protoss push out and be aggro while still knowing they can get back to base super fast if necessary. A swarm of Oracles is also insanely strong since you can warp out training structures to stop aggro, stop defense, etc. It means the protoss have lots more variety in gameplay - you've just got to actually try it. The Tempest is gonna be fun too :3
