The Monks are from Ivgorod... gorod is russian and means city iirc. Iv doesnt exist but Iva what would mean Willow (I'm not russian so dont nail me on the translations...). So yeah Slavic names would be the way to go if you want to abide by lore. Edit: Also like you mentioned they speak with a Slavic dialect. I'm thinking something followed by Wùkōng or Wùnéng. It depends on whether or not spaces and/or these special letters are allowed. Why would they weep? Yeah the Monks arent Japanese, like I said above they should be Slavic. Oh and Wùkōng or Wùnéng arent Slavic (they sound Chinese?) so are you going to weep too?

They won't. I will.
Sharp eye. No, they aren't Slavic. Yes, they are Chinese. Wùkōng: Awakened to Emptiness. Wùnéng: Awakened to Ability/Power.
Nope. At any rate, those are some cool details regarding the Monk, and the inspiration that must have gone into making him. Don't try and deny the elements they've drawn from the Buddhist monks though. In addition to his robes' immediate relations from color choice, right down to a giant prayer-beads-esque necklace, some of his skills are called Mantras (you know those that Buddhist monks recite). References to Shaolin, besides his fighting style (including bow stance, horse stance, etc.), many of the skill names are tributes to the tendencies of wushu technique names (Way of the Hundred Fists, Exploding Palm). Hell, even a rune variation of Wave of Light spawns a giant Buddhist bell. Nice detail on that one gorod thing you've got going though, I love stuff like that. People should call their characters whatever they want, but I will still shudder whenever I see some anime name that was likely derived because of the common misconception that Asia = JAPAN =^_^= My cent, take it or leave it. |
People should call their characters whatever they want, but I will still shudder whenever I see some anime name that was likely derived because of the common misconception that Asia = JAPAN =^_^= Yeah Asia =/= Japan, but why should Asia = China?;) Also one of the common religions in Japan is Buddhism next to things like Shintoism... but most Japanese follow Syncretism, they combine diffrent religions. So why are Japanese names "falser" than Chinese names? And Anime Names are simply Japanese Names... its like Comic Names = normal American names. Don't try and deny the elements they've drawn from the Buddhist monks though. In addition to his robes' immediate relations from color choice, right down to a giant prayer-beads-esque necklace, some of his skills are called Mantras (you know those that Buddhist monks recite). Like I said above, Japanese = Buddhism (to some extend). But yeah the Names of his skills are influenced by Wushu Techniques. You should also note that Japanese Warrior Monks existed (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamabushi or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C5%8Dhei) But the thing is they come from a "Slavic Country" so why would they use Asian Names? Lets say I am a German Buddhist I would still have my German name ;) I could change my name to a Buddhist Name but how many do that? And I think it was during Blizzcon that they mentioned that the Monk is a mix between a eastern European Person (ethnical) and Asian Religions. So Im not too sure how to name my Monk myself thats why I really want to see the names of some NPC Monks. I like to go by lore with my ingame names in RPGs and it would really help to know some NPC Names^^ My cent, take it or leave it. I take your cent ;). Its not like I dont agree with you (the Buddhism thing) but I dont see why Japanese Names are worse than Chinese :P A Blue Post regarding the Monks Lore (name wise) would be really cool.

The Shaolin characteristics is far more related to china (also note the end-game Chinese Opera type outfit). In fact, I even find this character to have far more in common with India than Japan. Besides the fact that China got the Buddhism directly from India (it only later spread to Japan, Korea etc.), it was also an Indian Monk that brought martial arts to the Shaolin temple. That, and his mark on his forehead seems to be a combination of both the Indian Bindi dot as well as the Buddhistic incense burning dots. I do not however find the Monk should have a Chinese name for these reasons. We both know he's a construct of so many things. But I do find the Buddhist symbolism used to be far more related to China/India, than Japan. Just so you know, with the newly arrived info that you brought to the table, when it comes to coming up with a cool and original name, I find that a Slavic name >>>> Japanese rōmaji name. The lore also mentions how the Monk seems not to take notice of the cold. It would appear he comes from a colder and harsher conditions. Yeah, I'm thinking maybe a Slavic type environment. |
Funny fact about that Outfit is that it has croses all over it (on the boots, on the "loincloth" and on her chest) you should also note the blue glowing eyes and "wings" on the Helmet/Shoulderpads... it looks more like a christian Angel-themed Armor than anything else. But if you look at the pic from IncGamers (http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/6107/title/inferno-gear-set-follies/cat/585) I could maybe agree that it looks like the chinese(?) outfit on the right side (or atleast it was inspired by it). And thanks for the Info about the resistance to cold didnt catch that fact before. If you take that fact together with the Slavic name of the Monastery it sounds very logic that the Monks should use Slavic names.

The thing is I want to name my Monk in a lorewise correct manner. And if we learn that their names are Indian/Chinese/Japanese/Slavic in Act 5 and I picked the wrong one I have to start anew. Is there a feature to rename your Chars? That would atleast help me to not have to start all over again. |

In the DFans forum Revith posted a list with all the passives. (http://i.imgur.com/tbyAM.jpg)
There you can see some Names that probably belong to Monks: - Master Wughan - Waykeeper Tzo Krin So I guess the Monks have more Asian Names... although Krin could be Slavic (Wikipedia says its an African Drum^^). So I guess both Asian and Slavic Names are fine... Also (almost) all the Monk specific Combat Staffs have Asian Names... like Bo, Eiku, Taiji, Lathi, Sibat, Chang-gun, Gon-b-o-n-g etc... these Names are from many diffrent Asian countries (Japan/China/Korea/India). Edit: I cant write Gon-!@#$ because B-o-n-g isnt allowed... they give weapons a name that is censored on the forums^^
