It was raining.
Kri swore to herself as she hurried down the moss covered docks, it always rained at Kurast, every day of the year, it always rained. Big cold drops that seemed to penetrate skin and armor alike; thumping on the roof tops of the many closed shops in an endless choir of rattling and thumping. No one even bothered asking for a fee when she walked up the bridge leading to the large ship- the last ship leaving Kurast towards Lut Gholein, this ship wasn't even supposed to sail, manned by a crew of pirates and adventurers, seeking to travel from the trading port city in the desert towards Tristram, well, New Tristram. Four days ago, words of a fallen star striking down the old Tristram Cathedral and of demons rising have reached Kurast, of course that all sails towards Lut Gholein were immidiatly halted, all apart from The Maid Rothchild. Entering the ship's belly through the large wooden door, Kri made a note that sleeping arrangements for the 3-week journey are going to be hard to make- every room housed around four to six people, sleeping in bunk beds, or on sheepskins spread across the wooden floor. She pressed forward, deciding to find a room later. She entered the dining hall, which, if judging by the smell, was converted to a tavern, she spotted an empty table and quickly took a seat, watching as a hapless waitress tried keeping up with the shouting demands of the drunk adventure seekers. She inspected them quickly- most of them were young, the oldest she spotted was around twenty years of age, each fitted with his or her own weapon of choice: a bent sword, a makeshift bow, but most were armed with large clubs and maces, obviously home made. Kri sighed, hoping somewhere that they would never get off the ship, she remembered the demons- they would eat them alive. Just as the doors swung open, a second waitress suddenly addressed Kri, asking her if she would like to order. "I'd tip you double if you keep talking to me untill I tell you to stop" Kri stated, her brown eyes crafully tracking the figure that walked in while the waitress rambled about what different brews they had to offer. She was around Kri's height, clad in a metallic body armor, a red hood doned her head and a red cape trailed behind her. Kri knew each and every mark carved on the metal that covered the woman's body- wards to banish demons, the two hidden compartments in the back of the armor- she could see the brownish color of a crossbow contrasting between the silvery metal and the red fabric. She glanced up- the woman's eyes were almost shining yellow and her lips were stiff in a dull expression. She walked right past Kri's table as the waitress kept explaining and comparing, that is untill she was silenced by Kri's raised hand. "I'd settle for some wine, thanks" She said, the waitress rushed towards the bar and Kri sighed. She knew the tales of the Fallen Star and demons had some credability to them, but seeing her, that woman on the ship, she realized just how real it was. Kri shifted her eyes back to the table. Ahead of her, just as she anticipated, was the woman, her arms crossed, the bright yellow eyes investigating Kri. "I know what you are" Kri hissed, she could feel her left hand tightening around the mechanism held in her glove, the spring was loaded, all it took now was for her to press all the way through "As do I" The woman replied simply "I saw you watching me. I was just wondering, was I marked by someone who was cowardly enough to send you after me?" "No" Kri shifted her head to the waitress, returning with her drink "I'm not on a mission" "Then what're your buisness on this trip?" The woman asked, her eyes narrowed "Same as yours" she sipped the wine "Killing demons" "Assassins don't just kill demons" The woman in front of her snapped. "Not if they don't have an angle. What's your angle?" "I owe one to a old friend- Cain" |
