Diablo® III

Micro stutter and FPS drop fix (intended for AMD/ATI)

Well, one thins is for sure. This is a game issue as it's been reported by too many people who didn't have this problem before yesterday.

Let's just give them time and fix it. The game has just been released, I think it's silly to label Diablo 3 as a really bad game so soon. I'm a happy patient customer :)

Hello,

Thanks for posting this, this is something we're looking into at the moment, I'll update as soon as I hear anything more about this issue.

Thanks a lot! We needed a blue confirmation from blizz, just to know we're not on our own. A shame I can't finish the game because of the stuttering, since it's quite unpleasant to play.

@AlexIchim: I actually noticed it during the open beta, but thought it was server stress. Now with the full game the micro stutter/desync is occasionally still there.

To be honest I think Blizz is not the only software company with this problem. I need to do this cap on TESV Skyrim too. It will show a perfect 60fps with no tearing, but it just isn't smooth at all.

I hope that Blizz can do it on the software/game level, but it might be a driver issue too.

MSI On-Screen Display Server will not stop the frame rate jumps for me even when i set it to 60 as if its having no effect on the game at all

@Doejeding
my joy was premature :) same stutter and fps spikes. i guess i ll drop this forum for some time and just wait for blizz fix. meanwhile i ll return to radeon pro (minimize everything + high priority) + gamebooster. i guess i will also play in 1024 res - game looks then like d2, and is almost as playable as d2 :)))

This didn't work for me. I tried also capping the FPS to 57 but it didn't have any affect.

Cheers though.

I'm running a Radeon 6850, and I *think* this helped slightly, although it's difficult to tell what fixes are actually working as the game's performance seems to improve over time anyway. Plus smooth gameplay in one act or area can turn into a stuttery mess in another.

Well, hopefully there will be a single solution but for the moment this works good for me. I just completed my first Normal run and without the fps cap I would've gone mad. Good luck to all.

Guys try to disable Ambient Occlusion from Nvidia's CP and check it again.
This works for me with the 301 beta drivers installed. Everything maxed 60 fps constantly with vsync on from the game menu and fps sliders disabled.

I really like this fix but it does not work with Dark3D - Direct3d filtering. So I have to choose between this fix to overcome the micro-stutter, or that filtering for the game to look better.

Hard choice :-(

Having the same issues, very bad lagspikes when spawning new groups of monsters, the larger group of monsters spawned in one time, the more aggresive lag spike i have (it was worst in Act 3 when fighting on fortress walls). Think thats not caused by my machine (Intel core i5, 6gb ram, Geforce MX540 2gb), i was trying lowering graphics all down to minimum ... low fx enabled, low physics, no shadows, antialiasing unchecked, without any improvement. And I found that this lag spikes occures more often when there is more players plaing the game. For example around 4-6 am there is much smoother gameplay than at 8 pm.

And i have one technical question, I have some bad idea that Diablo is choosing bad graphic card from 2 ones i have in notebook. I have some Intel Family graphic (probably integrated on mainboard) and then this Geforce MX540 2gb. And after Diablo 3 game installation there was written Intel Family instead of Geforce, dont you know how to get diablo select the right one graphic card ?? There is no such option in game preferences.

Hello,

Ok im running a 7970 in eyefinity 3 monitors @ 1920x1080, but i'm only playing the game in windowed mode.

The diablo window sits in my middle monitor probably about 1850x 900.

The stuttering is horrendous.

The frame rate flickers between 60fps and 59fps. Even in windowed, if i untick the vsync i get up 250fps.

i7920@3.6ghz
amd 7970 3gig
6gig corsair dominator ram
120 gig SSD HD

Ok.

I know this has been mentioned before in other threads, but I seem to have found a fix for myself.

Now, I would not suggest for one moment that people do this due to cost (unless you have one) but I have installed windows and diablo on the SSD drive. I was having god awful stuttering issues, even with low latency, but this seems to have resolved it.

Played for around 3 hours with no issues. Left graphics on default. 1080 res.

However.....I know this has not worked for all, only for some. i also know that some have had smooth game play for a few hours and then its has gone back to being a stuttering maniac.

I will keep you updated. For the record it is an OCZ Petrol 64 gig SSD.

I thought I would describe my experience with this issue as well. I spent hours tinkering with my video settings and overclocking my system trying to improve performance. For whatever reason I would always experience micro stuttering and low fps as described by the original poster. His recommendations had no effect. I should note that I used nVidia Inspector instead of MSI Afterburner. I also decided to move the entire game installation to my OS drive (ocz vertex 4) as opposed to my secondary drive (ocz vertex 2) where I initially installed it. Interestingly, this made things worse. I started to experience sporadic moments of a slow-motion like effect, noting that my frame rate would dip down to ~40 fps when this happened. I moved the install folder back to my secondary drive and that problem disappeared at least. Lastly, as recommended by Merllin, I disabled Ambient Occlusion. The micro-stuttering disappeared and I saw a noticeable fps improvement. Normal environments (just running about) rendered between 58-59 fps. Intense combat drew it down to between 35-40 fps. I don't know if its just lack of raw computing and video power or an issue with the game. Regardless, I am interested to see what news Lurdlespor brings back.

For reference, my system specs:

fx-6100 @4.0ghz
evga gtx 560 @gpu:852mhz|mem:2056mhz
8gb ddr3 g.skill ripjaws @1600mhz
ocz vertex 4

Update: May 22nd
Ambient Occlusion fix temporary. I logged in this morning and the same micro-stuttering was back. The moment any enemy appeared on screen, my frame rate would instantly dip to somewhere in the 30's. From there my fps would rapidly jump between numbers which changed too quickly to read.
