    There are some really great ideas here.
    I especially like OP's concept.

    Anyway, I don't have any solid idea for an item atm, but I think that an item which gives you a Mortar-like effect wouldn't be bad.
    For example:
    - When hit by a ranged attack there is X% chance to lunch a mortar attack.

    This could become a really neat anti-range item!

    Also, this is not technically an item idea, but I think that 'Gem Formulas' should be implemented in D3.
    It would be something like Rune Words from D2, but with some differences.
    For example, Gem Forumla would be based on all the gems you have equipped instead on gems of only one item.
    This would not only make gems more interesting, but would also force players to get creative by combining gems instead of simply stacking gems with main attributes.
    When you complete a Gem Formula, you would gain some additional stats, but you would also gain a very cool power.
    For example (again), a Wizard could start levitating and get an aura so he resembles an Archon while also gaining +5% to armor, all resistances and movement speed.
    Also, same Gem Formula could have partially or even totally different effect on a different class.
    For example (yet again), instead of making you Archon-like, a Barbarian who collects that Gem Formula could become bigger and have his skin become red and cracked in places so he resebles his Wrath of the Berserker form with some different stat bonuses to fit his class.
    Additionaly, I think that sockets should not take up places as one of magick properties, but should be 'extra' properties (maybe we could even have a Mystic artisan return and have her create sockets on our items for a large sum).

    All that would make it feel REALLY good when you collect a Gem Formula made from Raidant Star gems while levitating around as a Wizard to show off your achievement!
