Art of War: Spawn Larvae

Art of War: Spawn Larvae

Strategy, tactics, and skill. At the heart of StarCraft II are the legion of skilled tacticians and brilliant strategists leading armies of zerg, protoss, and terrans to war across the scarred battlefields of the Koprulu Sector. Knowledge is power; the greatest commanders throughout history earned their victories not merely by virtue of strategic brilliance, but also by applying themselves to rigorous study of warfare and the tactics used by those who fought before them. You too can tap into this valuable resource, and that’s where StarCraft Art of War comes in.

Are you a veteran player? Are you new to StarCraft II and striving to improve your skills? In this weekly feature, we invite players of all skill levels to ask questions, share their tactics, post replays, and provide advice for understanding, executing and defeating today’s most popular strategies. This week, we’re analysing: Spawn Larvae.

What technique do you use to make sure that you never miss an inject? How do you manage your Larvae to build a better swarm?

I change the hatchery cycle key from backspace to "`" (the button above tab). I then select all my queens, cycle between the bases and inject each one. You just need to have at least one queen at each hatchery (or skip the ones that don't of course).

all hatcheries on 4
main + a queen on 5
natural + a queen on 6
third + a queen on 7

inject looks like this then:
5, 5, v, click, 6, 6, v, click, 7, 7, v, click

i dont think its optimal, but i got used to it

@Cubix: I do the same. Tried the backspace method for a while, which is no doubt a faster way to do it. But as soon as you have more hatcheries than Queens its all screwed up. I found that annoying to not be able to make macro hatches without attaching a queen to it, especially when Zerg can't spent minerals easily in late game.

@DatSik:
a macro hatch without a queen doesnt serve much purpose though.
i have problems with macro hatches that i cant bind it to a button. 4,5,6,7 are taken, and i use 8 for evo chambers.
so i have to manually inject macro hatches..which sucks

I use the backspace method. Just simply change 'W' to Backspace (In camera hotkeys) then control group all your queens together, (For me, it's 4) then select all your queens (by pressing 4 in my case) press V (for Inject) then press 'W' and hold shift and spam 'click + W' afew times, then release all the keys and press 's' (I like to do this to stop my queens walking about) once you've got they hang of if you can inject a couple of seconds, and to remember my injects, well, I just sorta have an instinct to inject every minute :P

@DeaDHazza: Oopsy, typos in there >.< I meant to say
'Once you've got the hang of it, you can inject in a couple of seconds'

Against a Protoss or a Zerg, I mostly go heavy on Roaches, so when your injects are slightly delayed, it's not that big of a deal. But when you do something larvae heavy, like Muta Sling Bling, injects are just so important to keep that mineral count low, and when your ejects are delayed, it can cost you the game. But I can get away with it, because gameplay in the Gold League is far from perfect, but I'm trying to aim higher, ofcourse.
But anyway, I don't really like the inject mechanic. It's a repititive task, and more people would bother with it if Starcraft 2 was more of a fun game than a competitive one. Injecting can be very unforgiveful at higher levels. But then again, they have learnt to just deal with it. I've given the mechanic some thought, and I tend to blame if often when I'm playing bad. When you're injecting, the clicking part feels unnecessary. Remembering to do it is the most important.

I've lost a crapton of games because of ONE missed larvae inject. Just haven't enough to build units...All queens on 4, hatches on 5. Click on minimap, inject, repeat. Not the fastest way, should kinda work on it...

queens on 567(8), and just clicks through them when the spawn larva icon appears on the left hand side :D (can get pretty good injects by doing this^^)

hotkey all queens to 4, select 4 hold shift press v, then press space and mouse buttom x times for the amount of hatcheries you got 4.

Just never use this method if you have less queens than hatcheries for some reason, then its better to inject a bit slower, else youre queens will run all over the place, and thats a mess lol

All Queens --> 2.
Double tab 2 during battle to go to the first Queen, inject first hatch.
Then use minimap to locate hatchery's (queens still selected).
22 - V click - click minimap - V click - click minimap - V click - ...

Or something like that (haven't played in awhile).
I know there are better methods but i am used to it ...

(all hatchery's under 1 ofc for fast swarm reproduction)

I use F1 F2 F3 F4 mark each with the location of my hatchery, and move fast between them for fast inject :)

@Schalde: Same here! It's good because it's a fast and precise way. Backspace inject has the possibility tha your queens will move randomly on the map, which sucks. bad.
