Metalopolis Removal Explanation

Metalopolis Removal Explanation

In Season 3, we’re introducing a number of changes to the map pool; we’re dropping some older maps, and adding a number of new ones. One of the more notable changes we’re making is the removal of Metalopolis. We realize that this is quite a popular map, and we wanted to discuss the reasons why we might make such a change and hopefully lay some of your concerns to rest. We also would like to point out that merely because a map has been removed from the pool, does not mean that it will never make a return in the future. Despite its flaws, Metalopolis has strong potential to be a map that returns in future ladder seasons.

Still, there are reasons why we decided to retire Metalopolis for now:

Metalopolis has been around for quite a long time, over a year including beta. We felt that taking it out of the rotation would make some room for variety in the map pool.

Metalopolis suffers balance issues when close spawn positions occur, but becomes too predictable when they are simply disabled. Close positions have been under a lot of discussion lately, and we’re definitely examining better options to allow for random spawn positions across the map pool without also creating too much predictability and vulnerability to proxy rushes.

Overall balance has also proven to be an issue on Metalopolis -- even factoring in close position spawn issues. It’s among the least balanced maps currently in the ladder pool, and along with Scrap Station (also being removed) and Tal’darim Altar, has a heavy (60%+) bias toward zerg at the highest levels of play.

If Metalopolis makes a return to the ladder pool in the future, it will likely receive some balance tinkering, much like that administered to Lost Temple which resulted in the creation of Shattered Temple. In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy the fresh maps that have been added to the ladder pool in Season 3.

They should fix their crappy race balance and not blame the maps. I don't want to play on cookie cutter maps all the time.

I don't think it was necessary to remove it, and the "imbalances" are not as serious as they describe them. True, close spawn could be an issue, but the same applies to Shattered Temple, doesn't it? And besides, we can't have all maps like Shakuras Plateau (no close air spawns), it won't be at all interesting imo.

Jurie definately had some part to do with it. the balancing side specifically. When he was out on that battlefield things were way to unpredictable for blizzards liking and the spectators 2. Close spawns or not.. jurie has struck again

I believe Blizzards decision to remove the map had sometinhg in part, maybe the whole decision to do with Jurie.

Finally, that map somehow never fascinated me as it did with many others...
And good to see that blizzard makes a step against that really ###*% rushing. I mean seriously, every body can 2 gate or 6 pool but rather lose a good game than win in 7mins theres no fun in that.

Goodbye Metalopolis, you were my favorite map. My highest win percentage was on that map too, at 78% (I know this thanks to a third party application called SC2Gears.)
No, I don't play at a high level, and no, I am not zerg or terran, nor protoss. In fact, I play Random in the Platinum league.

I never liked metalopolis, its a heavy terran favor map indeed. Pretty much Xelnaga tower wars. Which feature i strongly dislike already, there's alrdy plenty of map vision / control features for races. As for scrap its just a 1 lane push map with easy defense from anything but air, ofc zerg will have favor, just 1 way to spread imba creep.

How would removing close Pos spawning make it too predictable when there are maps with only 2 spawn points on the ladder anyway? Ok there will only be Zel'naga soon, but its less predictable than that, its how the pros play those kind of maps in general, surely the same issue of balance due to close Pos is the same kind of issue on alot of the other 4 spawn point maps aswell, yet they are getting left in anyway, sounds like poor reasoning to me Blizz.

@IceResistant: if you have no close spawn you know its one of the other 2 pos, what happens then is man will proxy gate / rax on the 3th and win that way. that is where they are getting at.

so because a map is heavily zerg favoured in bronze you remove it from the map pool, while it is the most balanced and enjoyable map at masters lvl, you cant make balanced map for both competitive play and casual, but i guess thats why a lot of pro's stopped playing ladder

@Skiro: Yeah because Blizzard makes a lot more money of the couple of thousand Masters than it does off the couple of million bronzes ;)
