StarCraft Art of War – Terrain

StarCraft Art of War – Terrain

Strategy, tactics, and skill. At the heart of StarCraft II are the legion of skilled tacticians and brilliant strategists leading armies of zerg, protoss, and terrans to war across the scarred battlefields of the Koprulu Sector. Knowledge is power; the greatest commanders throughout history earned their victories not merely by virtue of strategic brilliance, but also by applying themselves to rigorous study of warfare and the tactics used by those who fought before them. You too can tap into this valuable resource, and that’s where StarCraft Art of War comes in.

Are you a veteran player? Are you new to StarCraft II and striving to improve your skills? In this regular feature, we invite players of all skill levels to ask questions, share their tactics, post replays, and provide advice for understanding and defeating today’s most popular units or strategies.

This week, we’re analyzing: Terrain.

Different maps demand different approaches - one build or composition might not be effective for all terrain. How do you adapt your play to different maps, and which terrain features do you look out for?

Wait, it's terrain right? The comments look like it's about Terran.

when did this thread become an argument about balance... how about, on this map you shouldn't build your pylon on the lower ground against zerg or this map has a high area at the back of the minerals useful for harass... come guys actually like... you know... quit the arguments of balance already.. enough's enough...

Unfortunaty, when we talk about pro gamers, terrans are too powerful, especially because of the ghost's EMP against the protoss. Such a small things are the reason more of the players especially in Korea to play with terran. OG'sMC is the only protoss in the leading ranks, I don't know for anyone else with the current S status now, rather MC is a genious, but the fact is that even with the latest patch with the range of the immortals, it's not enough. @SPINE - you suggest blizz to remove forcefields? I hope you're kidding? Ha ha... :))

I hope blizz remove forcefields and add something more fun to protoss in next expansion, its just too powerful for how easy it is to pull off.

at the very least make them destroyable

ForceFields are easily Mess Up (modify =P) the Terrain, while they Demolish the Basics of the 14 year old Gameplay... (No Positioning, No Timing Attacks)

Terrain or Terran :) The only advantage to terrain..terran have i see is the Seige tanks or any other ranged attacks .. until a protoss observer spots you and then stalkers blink onto your position. I like to throw a turret on the cliff to try to prevent.. perhaps the placement of the turret with increased range upgrade would be better on the ground next to the cliff to prevent blink onto your position while giving you a little bit of vision and giving you more time while they are destroying your turret.

again i say it GJ great advice and tips : i'd like 2 see somenthing like "i train x scv build the sp and a racks then i do x if my beeep of oponent(s) do that then i go and do this " stuff like that or "my rush strategy is ,,,,, if my oponent(s) is x race i counter like this his attacks".I may be in noob zone : bronze it's my second season and i stop playing sc1 a long time ago so i'm rusty now but my best advice is : play some custom games as terran if ur not a terran player.Playing terran myself mostly i learn alot not by browsing the web ot watching ,reading terran strategy, the only way is 2play the race u like and you r going 2get ur "behind" kicked but you will learn (again sry 4 my poor spelling) :D

Well, I´m not using so much "tactics" u go to 9 supply build supply depot, block" then trying to figure out the best way to destroy the other player. If they forgot detectors It´s quite easy ;). But do never forget 2 expand.

The terrain has no effect in SC II or on any maps. Sieges on cliffs should fire using an improved range (1-2) but it never happens. Hight is not important also, as the range of any unit is always constant.

@XExcalibur: Yes it has. If you build some Photon cannons on a cliff, and then it is running enemy tropps beside the cliff. The cannons can shoot at the troops while they can`t attack the cannons

@XExcalibur: The terrain is of huge importance!
For instance, my zerglings are worthless in small area's where they cannot surround well. small or big openings to your base, first and second expansion make THE differense on when to expand, and how easy it is to keep one/take one down. Cliffs support ranged units alot, just try and use a melee unit against a group of ranged units standing on a cliff. it's a lost battle. Also, the amount of expansions, and the distance between the players is of huge differense.

@Brandoboy: Well mate when you'll have like 1k of wins you'll figure that hight is not important. Line of sight is important but that's different and we are talking about the terrain today. And mate... go and learn how to play the zerg if you ever wanna get out of bronze league then come and share tips ok?

@XExcalibur: Watch any commentator on youtube and you'll hear over and over again how the terrain affects different races and units. Open areas, narrow passageways, cliffs, chokes, the size of the ramps, X'elnaga towers, the amount of space in your main and natural etc.... They all factor in. However, from experience I understand that a player with less experience would benefit more from macro skills than with the specific placement of his/her units to benefit from the terrain. Mid- to higher level players have to constantly gain an edge over their oponent, which is why this topic is being discussed.

@XExcalibur: says here that you were bronze 1v1 last season and you play random, are you really going to tell people to learn how to play when you think height isn't important?

@ProToSith: Terrain is important in leagues like platinum and higher, but since I am stuck in bronze with people who beleive they can win with builds like planetary fortress rush, terrain makes absolutely no difference...
