Season 5 Ladder Map Pool Update

Season 5 Ladder Map Pool Update

Beginning with Season 4, we experimented with prioritizing tournament-style maps on the StarCraft II ladder. This has been working out very well not only because it’s allowed pro players better opportunities to practice on the ladder, but also because players across all skill levels can now experience the tournament feel when playing on Battle.net. Given the success of these changes, we’re removing the last two maps in the current map pool that aren’t tournament-viable, and will be replacing them with new, tournament-ready maps.

Season 5 brings with it the following changes to the existing map pool, which begins the week of December 19:

These maps will be removed:

  • (4)Abyssal Caverns
  • (4)Nerazim Crypt

These maps will be added in their place:

  • (2)Arid Plateau

The rush distance on this map is comparable to Shakuras Plateau or the longest distance on Metalopolis. We tried to go for a slightly more exposed natural expansion, followed up by a greater choice of which third expansion to take. The high-yield expansion offers better resource acquisition, but is also the most difficult to defend, while the corner expansion is similar to expansions found on Metalopolis or Shattered Temple. The base closest to your main is open, but remains easy to defend because of short travel time from the natural expansion. We wanted to go for a more open center with very powerful Watch Tower placements.

  • (4)Entombed Valley

We’ve seen that rotationally symmetric four-player tournament maps can provide an advantage depending on where you start compared to your opponent and which races are involved in the match-up. This is feedback that we received from the community as well.

Our goal with this map was to address that issue. Whether you start horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, the game should be almost completely symmetric for both players. Also, no matter where you start, we were focused on minimizing features which tend to favor a specific race such as certain races experiencing challenges expanding beyond two bases, air-to-air distances which are too short between starting locations, the center path being the only viable attack route, or too many choke points.

TL Open

On the subject of new maps, TeamLiquid.net recently hosted a map contest to offer map makers a chance to show off their skills. This past weekend, the top contenders in the TL Open battled it out on the top maps that emerged from that contest. The TL Open tournament has now concluded, but you can still see these new maps in action by checking out the replays and VoDs. We’re carefully reviewing the maps that were featured in the tournament, and those which meet our standards have a chance to be included in future ladder seasons.

We’re very much looking forward to your feedback, so please let us know what you think about Arid Plateau and Entombed Valley, as well as the maps that were featured in the TL Open!

I would say that Arid Plateau is more of a zerg map with a lot of open space for attacks, and Entombed Valley would favor more the protoss and terran because it's easier to secure the natural and eventualy the third, but overall good maps :)

Why isnt there a tool, that shows you your win:loss ratio. Since the amount of losses is invisible, i have no idea how good im actually playing.
So wouldnt it make sense, to show - only the player who owns the account!!! - his win:loss ratio OR the amount of lost games, like it was earlyer shown to public??

When small map features like rotational vs mirror symmetry have impact on balance you know the game is broken beyond repair.

I don't know so I'll ask...

- How long a period is a season?
- Why can't we have a ladder where defeats also is shown ?
- Why not display the country players come from ? E.g. by flag?
- I like snow.... MANY more snow maps please!?
By the way, GG Blizzard

@Flanigan:

I believe it's 2 or 3 month's as it has been every season. Ladder defeats is been removed from all but master level players. That is propably because many would stop ladder playing after getting too much of beating. So it's just one effective way to deal with individual issues on gaming.

And why to display flags or something when you can allways ask :D (not that everyone would answer but most propably will)

Blizzard, why do you never want to change the 3v3 map pool? Both the 2v2 and the 4v4 pool have been changed to allow for more macro games. The 3v3 pool is still hardly untouched...

The new 1v1 maps looks promising tho.

@MadMike:

agreed, the 3v3 pool is TERRIBLE.
especially maps which have a specific start location very suspectable to cheesing, which are, btw, all the old maps in the pool from the release.

I've tried some games on these pre-season 5, in customs with a friend.
Arid Plateau is silly. Horizontal spawns on Entombed Valley is also silly. If horizontal spawns were to be removed on then it would be a fine map.

I love the look of Arid Plateau, it seems to be the kind of map that will almost always have nailbitingly close matches. So much risk but so much reward. For example, if you fast expand and you can hold it, that leaves you with a fairly easily defended 3rd and fourth base. It also look like it has many interesting attack paths which (since xel'naga caverns is being compared to Arid Plateau) Xel'Naga Caverns never had. Entombed Valley looks like a hell of a lot of fun, it has a great layout and smooth 'looking' expansion layout. I would also love to see Cloud Kingdom in the map pool, don't have it replace any map, just add it in as an additional map. But from the looks of things, the map pool is fairly complete.

I like the new maps, although I didn't hate Nerazim Crypt or Abyssal Caverns. The shape of the high ground enabled some Skyterran effectiveness. On the other hand walling off so far from the mineral line was very tricky for Terran, especially with the ability to surround that position from the low ground (think Protoss mass gateway/robo with obs).

This is a superficial thing, but i really liked the colour of those maps. Blue is so much better than yellow or this crappy green of the second map.

Just keep the colours in mind blizzard.

So there won't be any new maps for 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 in this season either?

This would be the 2nd season in a row without any new team maps. I know 1v1 is the most important for E-sport and I know it has the most players.

However there is still lots and lots of paying customers that enjoys teamplay just as much as player who enjoy 1v1. Would it be to hard to create some new team maps that are good.
