Developer Update with Game Director Dustin Browder

We often use special press events to pass along information about what we’re working on and what’s coming in future patches and products. These announcements are useful to the community and us alike because they allow us to reach a very wide audience. In many cases however, the message is not as deep or as detailed as we’d like, so we thought we would try some developer updates (like this one) to see if we can do a better job of communicating our intent for the various features we are working on. We have a number of updates and changes coming SoonTM to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and we wanted to share some of them with you.
Patch 1.5 Is Coming
The upcoming 1.5 patch will be our most feature-laden patch to date. This patch represents the first steps towards the release of our first expansion for StarCraft II, Heart of the Swarm, and will include numerous upgrades and fixes throughout the game. One of the most significant additions will be the all new Arcade feature which includes improved custom game visibility, ratings, reviews, game instructions, screenshot support, and more. Patch 1.5 will also include significant improvements throughout the overall user interface, streaming support, antialiasing, editor and modding upgrades, new art tools, and more. We’ll go into further details about these features in future developer updates. In this update, I would like to provide some insight into the thinking and motivation behind a few of the upcoming changes.
Arcade & Custom Game Selection
We discussed the new Arcade and Custom Game creation tools that would be available at BlizzCon 2011 and while things have changed since then, we are looking forward to getting it out to players for testing. Overall, the biggest complaint we’ve heard is about the popularity system and how games are listed. The challenge we face with the interface is how much to orient the space towards the player, versus how much we focus the interface on the needs of the mod maker. Mod makers want a very egalitarian society where no single map has any type of “advantage” in the interface. On the other hand, most players just want to see the best maps and they don’t want to have to sort through hundreds of maps to find the ones that are good. We think what we have now doesn’t do enough to surface new maps that are good. While we tried to make things better with “Fun or Not,” the system alone isn’t doing enough for many of our mod developers so we wanted to try something different.
To help players find games more easily in patch 1.5, we intend to include an “open games list.” To be clear, this will not be every open game that is on the service. Instead, the open games list will deliver to you a selection of games from the many hundreds or thousands that are currently open. We are currently working on different ways to determine how the list you’ll see is generated.
We’ll also be releasing the art tools that we use internally to create art for StarCraft II, thus enabling mod developers the ability to more easily create their own art and add it to their creations. In addition, we’re beginning to reach out directly to mod and game developers that have created fun, quality maps on Battle.net to get direct feedback, help them tackle obstacles, and provide them with early access to the 1.5 feature set so that they can begin to prepare for Arcade prior to its release. We’ll be revealing more details about the Arcade and the changes we’ve made to the concepts in the near future.
Contact & Communication
We’ve heard concerns about the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty social experience and many of these comments boil down to, “the service feels empty” and “I don’t know where to go to find people.” We have some simple fixes we’re going to put into the chat system to try to give players some additional connectivity. These aren’t huge fixes, but they may help players who want a more social experience.
First, we’ll allow players to resize their chat windows to fill a larger portion of the screen. We’ll also remember the chat channel you were in as well as the position of that chat channel on your screen for when you next return to the game. This will allow players who want to recreate something that feels a lot more like Warcraft III or the original StarCraft to build their own interface that looks a lot like those older games.
We’re also working on a feature that will help players connect with other players and games that are near their location (connecting through the same IP). We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. Although this may not be ready in time for the release of patch 1.5, we do intend to have this available by the time Heart of the Swarm ships.
Much of the content we are working on for Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm is motivated directly by community feedback. While we’re unable to respond to every post, or even most posts, your feedback does get to us. Thanks for sending it.
Let us know what topics you’d like us to cover in future Developer Updates. Topics that we’re thinking of covering include: Game Balance, Heart of the Swarm Multiplayer Progress, and Blizzard DOTA Gameplay.

News on any new unit upgrades, and abilties
Also woud love to now more about new units, Maybe the ultralisk morphing into a brutalisk one day :D ?
Being able to play agianst people from other platforms like us eu and asia
I am looking forward to using the viper, and massing swarm hosts and broodlords.
When the Beta launches, let me know. I want to play HoTS!
for adding map control why not a unit with a set up time that reduces the speed of units within its range like the psi disrupter in the campaign but against any unit.
Also for a long range air siege unit without splash, just improve the carrier. adjust cost/time maybe let the carrier leave interceptors on patrol while the carrier itself can move back a much larger distance. Other ability ideas that would be interesting; recall, stasis field, time altering effects or temporary shield effects in combat.
Bowlofnoodle.
Shared Replays. <3
im silver league and i really want to know the ratio.
if you are afraid of that people will quit starcraft 2 due to very low ratio
you are wrong, for me at least. I've never cared how much i lose.
"W" for all gateways?
why not "W" for all larvae?
I guarantee that this would be a big hit! Hope you guys there can consider this.
Super thor: micro? pff..
Warhound: nope
Shredders /cut: nope
Swarmhost: nope?
Tempest: nope?
Oracle: alrighty, ill give you that one
Swarmhost: pff haha good one
Ultralisk remake: easiar to a move with less clicks
first - blizz team - GJ ! thanks for the wonderful creation :D
i have a feature request:
make an online tournament mode that viewers (not participants) could join the ongoing matches and watch them live at their computer.
this is so much better than watching a stream on justin.tv or own3d.tv
think how much fun it would be to see the pros play when you are the one in control of the camera.... :D
of course you could just follow the "broadcaster" view and also hear his commentary, and there should be some "auto-drop/no lag" mechanism that kicks viewers if the lag or stuck so it doesnt affect the real game
i can only imagine how awesome it would be actively viewing a pro GSL game maybe with follow camera on Nestea... :D
i hope some1 reads this and maybe oen day we could all enjoy the new level of tournaments-watching-experience ! :D
Love
but then again cheaters can stream-ghost anyways...
The Protoss advanced units should be more powerful, and should each cost more population. As it is, the zerg have very cheap zerglings etc, whereas the terran and the protoss are equal. I would have expected the protoss to be on the opposite end of the scale to the zerg in this context. The story arc depicts the Protoss as a scattered race, and few in number, though they are advanced- I feel this doesn't show in their in-game unit's power.
To cope with this I imagine there would be other alterations, ie: pylon psy and cost would be hiked upwards, the cost of all units would go upwards, as would the resource collection rate. Which would be expected from a more advance race. example.
cost of pylon 200 (with increased resource collection rate)
pylon supply, 12.
build time 15 (significantly less)
void ray cost 300minerals 200 gas (significantly more)
psy cost 5 ( significantly more)
build time 40 (faster)
attack 10/12 ( more) hit points 200 (more)
etc.
I'm sure someone else could balance it better, but i'd like to see what other people think of this as a basic idea.
Oh, and the destruction effects should be randomized. When a battle crusier blows up, it could do either the effect it does, or an earth shattering explosion/a crash landing/spin out of control or something, so that there is more variety in the destruction effects.
As for the mother ship being scrapped. ...meh, when I first saw pictures of it (pre sc2 release) i thought it was going to be the new nexus. I still think it should be tbh..... floating nexus....... oh yes.
--> The reason is simple, the befinits enourmous.
.) LAN latency
The difference is just incredible, just play a SP game vs the AI, and you know what im talking about. !@#$ piracy srsly! Yeah there will people torrent the game then, so WHAT? The majority will still buy it... Heck even NOW ppl. still buy broodwar.
.) Loss/win ratio displayed in detail for yourself (matchup/maps etc.)
Hey man what's your win rate vs Z on antiga? ... erm... i ... have... absolutly no idea.. If ppl. dont want their stats to be public just implent a small button -> public stats on/off. So i can still see my win/loose % on X map vs X matchup. But others even friends could not. Can't be that hard.
.) Just implent sc2 gears in sc2 ..
sc2 gears is simply BRILLIANT, i have absolutly no idea why you guys did not and even more DO not implent something like that in sc2. A really deep going analyzing tool for sc2. I mean sc2 for many ppl. is about getting better, improving climbing up the ladder etc. Without a tool like that and only with the currrent sc2 ingame options it makes improving harder for actualy no reason.
.) An option nonranked/ranked ladder games where you can choose wich race you want to play against!
Make it ranked, make it unranked, i really dont mind. But an option to search for a spesific race would be amazing. Sure i could also joing a clan, or search on TL for training buddys etc. But why go out and search for "third party options" so to say, when you could be able to implent such a thing.
