Developer Update: Heart of the Swarm Multiplayer

I am listening to When I'm Grandmaster while writing this. If you want the full experience, open up a tab in your browser and listen to this while reading.

We are currently working nonstop on StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm (and Blizzard DOTA) and hope to be able to get Heart of the Swarm out to the public to see sometime in the near future. While we believe we have some great things lined up for the single-player campaign, I wanted to take some time to give you an update on the recent changes and what cool things we have in store for multiplayer.

Terrans

Terrans have undergone significant changes since we talked about them at BlizzCon. We have not kept the shredder, and even the warhound is in contention. The shredder was very confusing for players as well as being something that was easily used to kill a large number of workers with little to no warning. It was rarely used for its intended role of map control. The warhound still feels a little too much like a small thor, which is just not new enough to give terran players new strategies. We are still experimenting with a wide range of units, particularly from the factory, which we think is a little light on options. We have had a great deal of trouble with the terrans largely because they are such a flexible and effective race in StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. We want to provide terran players with new strategies, however, so we will continue to work on them.

If we keep the Thor, we are currently experimenting with an anti-air spider mine that would give the terrans a way to get some factory-built anti-air into small places that a Thor has trouble reaching (like near your minerals). Whether this is meaningful, considering terrans have marines, is still in question. We are also experimenting with an extremely long-ranged terran missile launcher that can be used to break siege tank lines to make terran-vs.-terran factory-based games more dynamic.

Protoss

Protoss have gone through some changes since BlizzCon as well. The oracle is still in and functioning as a protoss raider (as intended) that can give the protoss some reach in the mid-game to disrupt enemy plans. The replicant has been cut. He was causing enemy players to not build certain unit types and was actually removing diversity from the game instead of adding diversity.

The tempest was a powerful splash anti-air capital ship at BlizzCon. With the addition of the range upgrade on phoenix in Wings of Liberty we no longer feel like a splash anti-air weapon is necessary on the protoss, but we would still like to give the protoss some additional firepower in the air. The tempest is currently a very long-ranged aerial siege weapon that can strike both air and ground targets. This gives the protoss army some real reach to force an engagement on their terms in the end-game.

We’re also experimenting with some nexus abilities. One example is a mass recall that allows the protoss to be more aggressive. They can move out onto the map with their slower sentry/zealot force and, if things don’t work out, recall the force back to their base if and when things go wrong.

Zerg

Zerg are the most stable and largely unchanged since BlizzCon. The swarm host is still serving well as a zerg siege unit that can burrow and pressure the enemy from a distance (in a very zergy way), but the viper has some slightly different new abilities. In addition to Abduct, the viper also has the ability to blind biological units in an area of effect. Blinded units have their range reduced to 1. This is obviously effective against terran infantry as well as zerg roach and hydra armies. The viper can also regain energy by feeding off of minerals. This locks up the mineral patch and prevents it from being harvested, so you want to use this ability away from your base.

We have decided to keep the overseer and make the viper a pure caster. We will be taking a look at the overseer to see what we can do to make his abilities more interesting.

We are also trying some additional abilities on the nydus network to allow you to spawn different types of nydus worms. The most interesting worms have been a worm that can spew creep across several screens to create a zerg assault highway, as well as a worm that attacks only enemy buildings, meant to be used as a ground-based zerg base raider.

We have some more work to do before we’re ready to begin beta testing Heart of the Swarm. We know that everybody wants a date for when they can play, and we know how important it is to get this out in front of the community as soon as possible. We’re working on it.

Also, this is awesome:

I see most ppl are talking about protoss lacking of some sort of artilery, but i see that in diffrent way. Protoss will have even more air army, tempest looks imba for me but what about Zerg?? Zerg has only mutas and corruptors for air vs air and thats it. I think Zerg should get some new air unit i miss scourges from sc1 ;)

@Aberrator: Abberator is right. Zerg's lack of a proper anti-air unit (preferably EARLY ON) is the absolutely biggest balance problem that exists in SC2 atm. Neither hydras nor corruptors are any match for Protoss' flyers. I have stopped playing Zerg altogether entirely because of their worthless anti-air capabilities. Lost too many matches against the void rays as Zerg. I think Zerg could use a couple of flat-out DPS units instead of more caster units.

Rocket launcher to beat siege tanks lines... Back to Dune 2, anybody? :P Those were the times. (For you youngsters: no boxing, 15 to 25 units total allowed depending on the mission.)

what i think is hillarious is that the races buildt like realy good tecnology in sc1 and suddenly they go hey! lets throw all oure good stuff out of the window and go back to the 1940 battle systems and pwn some, cus the goliath can't seem to suddenly function and that damn valkyer hell no we dont need that cus we got the amazing viking now to take care of that mass of mutas, DHO! srsly i get that its alabout balance and changing the game to something new, but srsly you removed like half of the cool stuff from bw and !@#$, damn and the gost is like hey lets not use lock down ever again cus blizz says so... anyway i bet this is gonna end up like mist of pandaria is gonna end, in the drain hole with a turd on top, and the emplayies standing there saying, what did we do wrong? oO

In my opinion Blizzard should not replace units by new types - to increase diversity the units have to be added! MORE UNITS = MORE OPTIONS = MORE TACTICS! For example why not add to Terrans medium - light unit like Goliath? Why there is no heavy drop-ship to increase possibility of surprising attacks (something like it is in WoL campaign)? Protoss should have something good to deal with swarming air units – in SC1 was Corsair and something similar would be beneficial. There is currently no regeneration for Protoss shields – this is not fair – Zerg and Terran can heal their units quicker (Shield Battery from SC1 should return). For Zerg it would be nice to have something like capital anti-ground AND anti-air unit... something like Brutalisk. The most important point is – there are not too powerful units – there is production time and there is the unit cost – some units are powerful, but they will not win the game – they will be just too difficult to build and anyway opponents have always their own powerful units.

@Mergigoth: Because too much diversity is bad. Hard to balance, some units would be unused.

@Mergigoth: Dude if you look at the shield regen time and compare it to the hp regen of any Zerg unit you would see there isn't a problem here and maybe even Zerg should be buffed if you compare anything but the roach borrow regen.

Also an easy fix for your shredder cheese is just to make it deactivate in the presence of building like it does troops. Will also stop dozens being placed behind a zergling wall

So far I've only seen 2 units for each race, i really hope you have more prepared as it will be hard to justify buying an expansion (which has taken almost 2 years) which has only 6 new units

"We are also experimenting with an extremely long-ranged terran missile launcher that can be used to break siege tank lines to make terran-vs.-terran factory-based games more dynamic."

People do use muledrops to damage tanks. Why not have like droid type unit that could be stored somewhere when built like upgraidable addon "sidepods" on ebay. Those units could be launched to orbit and then land on wanted area. Those droids could deal extra damage against mechanical and are designed to take down moded tanks.

I do not really understand why terran need warhound at all. The Goliath can be used again maybe with some modifications instead of Thor, if it is needed. What is the real difference between Goliath and Warhound?

Contrary to Terran, Protoss are the less flexible race of SC2. Mecha's terran needs to be changed to add new strategies, but for Protoss, more changes are needed.
To be more flexible, Protoss needs especially little units and new abilities (like the recall of Nexus).
And I believe you can think about tiny changes than can make the play better. Like :
- Spell of instant teleportation of a build from a pylon to another one ?
- Drop of pylons with the warp prism ?
- Units recall.
- An upgrade to increase the cargo space of a warp prism ?
- A spell to recharge shield ?
- A new spell for stalkers ?

It is only ideas, but it is to show that the game play can evolve and be more flexible without add big units.

Thank you Blizzard for sharing your thoughts with us! Keep it up! ^^

Also, why not to give that Anti-Air spider mine to the Raven? It's Seeker missile is seriously underused now and Raven itself is a rare guest in competitive play. Giving aa mine to Raven could fix it. That's my opinion ofc.

I personally am radically opposed to deletion with almost any unit of WOL. HOTS should be extended and no new game has to be as broodwar. if there will delete the unit I'll just not buy HOTS

I'm very curious about HOTS. WOL was balanced in every MU except TvP a lil bit but P favoured all is up to skill so I'm really waiting for the new expansion!!! CHEERS Blizzard gj, but mists of pandaria is very rofl. I quit playing WoW after wotlk

and a long range balistick missle (dealing splash) sounds awesome, it'l realy pot a stop to the protoss deathball obsesion vs terran , and the zerg brood lord clumps.....i think evan more awesome is if the missle where to be fired from the BATTLECRUISER.....aa?..dosen't it sound good to u guis :) ?..that way the battlecruiser would alwais be used, not like atm witch is uced like never!!!!!+ plus it's suck an awesome unit that we don't se enough of
-to balance this out the tempest should have a small splash dmg as well
-as for the zerg...atm, ever so often we see zergs go for mass air... and it's realy good...i guess the swarm houst balances out the terran balistick missle and the tempest artilery concept.......but it would be nice if the zergs would have something dealing splash only ws air, in adition to the infestor......
hope my ideas don't seem to rediculous to u guys ^^...♥ u blizzard
