To click or not to click?

To click or not to click?
If you’re having trouble keeping up with your opponents, maybe it’s because you aren’t taking advantage of hotkeys yet. Using hotkeys is the most efficient way to issue commands; it will increase your “actions per minute”, ultimately helping you to defeat your opponents - especially in frantic multiplayer matches.

When you mouse over each action in the command panel, you will notice the description includes a highlighted letter in brackets. This is that action’s hotkey. Pressing this key on your keyboard will issue the command, with the added bonus of freeing up your mouse, enabling you to play much more efficiently.  You can access the full list of hotkeys through the game menu, by pressing Menu > Options > Hotkeys. There are different hotkey layouts for both left- and right-handed players that you can choose depending on your personal preferences.

Will you continue to click, or instead courageously check out hotkeys? Let us know how you get on, and your preferred hotkeys setup, right here in the comments. Finally, don’t forget to test your hotkey skills in the the “Harbinger of Death” Challenge mission. Good luck and have fun!

what I'm finding quite irritating is if you hit a hotkey for an ability thats not available accidentally (eg corruption - not enough energy) the units get deselected. a bit irritating in the heat of battle!

Any chance someone @ Blizz explain to us why can't we customize the keyboard like in all previous games? It would be a bit less frustrating if we at least knew the reason. Folks who used custom keys in WC3 (like me) are finding it very difficult and frustrating to play the game. Most people find grid setup useless because of attack being 'T'.

To be frank it felt odd using Standard without some tweaking. First I have a Logitech MX 1000 laser mouse. I have all my special abilities bound to the mouses large array of buttons, left and right middle mouse click comes in particularly nice for both the High Templars storm and energy drain abilities and quickly creating forcefields with the Sentry. Back middle mouse click to use Blink, forward for Sentry forcefield. Back thumb button used for Charge ability. The rest of my controls for creating structures and making/ warping units are 'macroed' to an array of keys on my Microsoft X6 sidewinder. Probably not competition valid but to be honest I don't play for competition the game is however soo much more fluid with my set-up. The only time I use the menu system is for the one of structures and upgrades although I'll probably bind these eventually as well.

Like many I use buttons 1 to 6 for forces and structures. I generally only use buttons 1 to 3 for units the rest for build ques.

Im curious if anyone uses the camera hotkeys?

The hotkey setup I want is actually impossible.

Why?

This is my keyboard : http://kinesis-ergo.com/images/kb_adv-pro_met720x471.jpg

Note that Y is on the right hand.

This is my keyboard layout : http://aoeu.info/images/svorak-A1-large.png

As you can see, the available layouts are not working for me.

Until the hotkeys are customizable, I'll have to keep using the mouse. (I do use A though since it happens to be the same on both layouts.)

I forgot to add that this issue is not specific to my keyboard layout, there are lots of non-qwerty layouts in use. Qwertz, azerty, arensito, colemak, dvorak, svorak, svdvorak... the list goes on. Why anyone thought it would be a good idea to not include customizable hotkeys is beyond me.

@Scorpyn: fact of the matter is that 90% of the world is using normal qwerty keyboards and when you cant make everybody happy just go with the majority

though i also strongly believe in customizing hotkeys will benefit alot of players. personally i dont care because i can easily remember them now.

@Leiph: 3 million copies sold so far, 90% qwerty means 300 thousand players who don't use qwerty. These numbers are probably way off, but not including customizable hotkeys is a major failure in a game of this size imo. Especially as you may not want to use the defaults with qwerty either. You can make everybody happy, just make hotkeys customizable.

@Scorpyn:
You are absolutely right. And even with a Qwerty keyboard custom hotkeys would be nice. I wish to use ` for my hatcheries rather than the backspace button. Infestation pit F rather than I. I'm sure people will have lots of wishes regarding this.

i prefer standard hotkeys much more. I mean for me its very easy to remember - S for SCV, B for Barrack, R for Rafinery, R for Reaper, etc. :) Of course there are few exceptions where often used key would be in long distance from WSAD, like P should be for Probe, but its E instead. But these few exceptions can be quickly learned as they are assigned mostly to A and E.

For group controls I go:
(in early game): 1: SCV, 2 CC, or 1 for rushing group, lets say 2 reapers
in later game:
1: Marauders + Marines
2: Medivacs
3: Ghosts, if against Protoss
4: Additional forces, that would be Vikings vs Protoss with Colossis
0: All Orbital Commands (quick scans FTW!) (however, I think I will move this one to 5 or 6 since its closer than 0 and easier to click without looking on keyboard)

Tried the grid layout, but I find A a much better hotkey for the all-important attack-move command than T. This command is crucial for micro, so it's enough of a reason for me not to switch to grid layout and stick with the standard - it's not that complicating once you get used to it.

As for the control groups: 1: main force, 2: second/special force, 3: all my raxes, 4: all my factories, 5: all my starports, 6: haven't decided yet - will probably try upgrade structures, 7-9: expansions (CCs), 0 - main base (CC). Allows me to pump new units and workers and fight with micro at more or less the same time. As for commands, I use hotkeys for the most common things (like stims) and mouse-clicks for less common ones (such as cloak for ghosts).

I m sure there are a lot of players that have problems with remembering all the hotkeys same as me. But there was/ is one game where they invented really good way to remember hotkeys. It was like this.
Q, W , E, R, Each letter represent possition of icon in game.
A, S , D , F, It means when i have sellected SCV and push B to build
Z , X , C, V Comand center (Q), Rafinery (w) ,Suply depot (E)
Baracks (A) , Engi bay(S)
Hope you can understand what i just wrote and this can be for every building and for every attaction. And you dont need to remember each specific letter only possition of abbilities and building. Whitch is easier because abbilities are always down.

I only learn the basics for each race. I hotkey production structures to my number keys so I can recruit while on the offensive, so I have reinforcements in case it all goes Pete Tong. I also don't have to scroll the map all the way to my base and back. Could miss a decisive moment in combat otherwise.

Also, having learned what hotkey is assigned to specific buildings can shave off seconds of mouse dragging if you have the cursor where you want the structure to be placed while you press the HKs. Might not mean much but thats a few extra seconds saved to recruit a peon or soldier.

Make custom key settings so you're not bound to the blizzard only grid. Make those custom key settings (advanced) for every race. That would rock and help me a great deal since my left pinky can't reach the control button ^^

Let's face it, I can wager $10 that there is no diamond player who doesn't use hotkeys for every function in the unit command panel, with maybe the sole exception of building some structures (why remember a hotkey for, say templar archives, when you lose <1 sec on clicking it and it is used only once-per-not-even-every match?). Hotkeys are essential, whether you need to jump between your base to build stuff or you need to use certain abilities in the heat of battle.

I'm waiting. I want to customize my hotkeys. Like WoW all keys are binded to my mouse. I want to do the same with SC2.

Other then that. Yes hotkeys are a must. You can play without them till medium, but if you want to try hard or higher ( Talking about singleplayer ). I would recommend hotkeys. Still waiting for the patch. I read you can then customize your hotkeys.

Learning hotkeys has been a great help with the online matches (that and remembering to scout!). I'm very new to SC2 and it all felt a bit unnatural at first, but it's really worth persevering with as it gives you much more time to concentrate on the action!

I found that just starting by grouping your buildings to the number keys helped a lot. Then moved on to learning keys for building individual units. Now I can't imagine NOT using them! It's great to be able to move your army around and build up your base at the same time.

There is a bug in hotkeys "Grid", possibly only with the German keyboard.
"Y" is BOTH "Grid Command Button 0,2" AND "Warp in".

That means a protoss player warping in to a pylon (perhaps only a German keyboard) cannot press "Y" to do things like probe warp in building.
Please move the "Warp In" hotkey somewhere else.

I'm too used to the hotkeys from SC1. It takes me time to realise that it's the wrong keyes in SC2. (E.G. (P)robe vs Prob(E) and (P)ylon vs Pylon(E)) Also with switching between races it becomes confusing some times. I some times mix up (A)ssimilator and (E)xtractor.
