The Price of Victory: Managing Resources

The Price of Victory: Managing Resources

There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty multiplayer matches. At first it seems deceptively simple: collect resources, build an army, fight. Dig a little deeper, and you'll find that it’s more than just deciding on the correct build order. It’s about making your resources work for you and putting time on your side.

Buildings and units have different costs, whether in minerals, vespene gas, supply, or a combination of all three. Factor in the time they take to build and things get complicated. Managing your resources is crucial to being able to build the units you need as you need them and failing to use them efficiently (or at all) can mean defeat.

For our discussion topic today, we want to ask: how do you manage your resources in multiplayer matches?

Allways build probes/drones/svc's. And I try to never que units, if you dont que units you have more cash to spend right at this moment witch can give you an extra unitproducing structure instead of doing nothing. The teory is quite simple: Get as high income as possible and spend as much as possible all the time, then in the end you will have a lot of stuff to kill your opponent with. www.day9tv.blip.tv there you can learn alot about how to manage your economy and a lot more!

True but mostly i spend my resoruces for upgrades and defence. Strong defence is a good way to counter the apponent when u win while his first real attack. Atleast thats my opinion. I also always harras a bit with those dudes who can jump ( forgot the name :P ).

i always try to continuously get rid of my resources, in any way possible (but in a way that makes some sense, of course). from what other good players have said, that is a very good general rule, but consequently i do notice sometimes that i should have saved some minerals or gas, especially for expanding. so I'm working on having a better sense for when to stop production of certain things (whether it's workers, combat units, or buildings) in order to have... well... a better, more fluid strategy.

As Zerg: Vespene will be your main problem, since you have the racial advantage of building units in groups, so you can get mineral lines full quite fast.
I like getting my 2nd extractor slightly before I expand.
My third when the expansion is up.
Fourth when spire is close to finishing.
And 5th and 6th at the same time, when my third base is operational.

Terran: Constant SCV production up to about 30. When expanding - take gas as prio 1, MULES can fix low mineral flow, there is no such quick fix for gas. When raided ALWAYS load SCV:s into command centre first, no matter what, THEN take off. Complete waste to risk an additional 6 of them destroyed on the ground. Lastly - DONT take off if it is a Viking raid, for obvious reasons (I did that - once...).

Try and get a good mineral / gas ratio. If you have too many minerals expand so you can get more gas, when the ratio is good build more units. If your ratio is good and but you are at 200/200 then attack and build units as you lose the ones you have.

If minerals are gathered efficiently only with 3 workers per field then we want unit count in the game with patch 1.1 !
Do you count how many workers u already produced or how many u need more if u lost some ? Usually impossible as there are more important things to do ;P

@Lutarez: Right now we have one method which is targetting all your workers and hotkeying them to see how many you have

@Arthur: poor method. Can only help after I know I already have optimal number for given nexus and still would require visual counting ;) spending precious seconds of your attention

@Lutarez: Not really. You can select all your workers at a nexus manually at any time, doesn't have to be when you have an optimal number. And you don't have to count manually, the amount of units selected is showed on the control tab.

@Vorgrim: being how old ?
I thought the same but - comparing with SC1 - I improved a lot I think , I'm in gold
there are moments when u shouldn't play however, because your performance will be so poor, like that little hangover day ;)
Playing after 1-2 beers is somehow a positive experience though :D

@Lutarez: My point is there is so much to learn for a person who is new to RTS. I'm not going to resort to cheesing, because I want to improve my overall game.

Its not so much the losing that is frustrating, more that I don't really feel like i'm doing any better than when I started and was just throwing roaches and hydras from 1 base.

Maybe Zerg is not a good choice for a new player, but I don't have any urge to play terran or protoss, at all.

@Vorgrim: Patience mate! I never played SC1 and not even much RTS apart from Warcraft 1 & 2. Then skipped aload of years as didn't touch Warcraft 3.
One thing I notice from your achievements is your not playing much campaign other than the normal modes. As a player that is also learning I would recommend giving the vs A.I and trying all of the challenges and achievements to hone your RTS skills.
Then hit the vs Player modes! You will see your improvements via your achievements! Good luck!

One thing that I like to do when playing zerg is to keep my army at a bare minimum (enough for small annoying raids and defense) in the mid/late game while pooling resources, larvae and building up my supply and tech choices. This way, with good enough scouting, I can make a very quick tech swap and overwhelm my opponent seeing as he can't possibly be sure of which route I'm taking.

This only works if you're dead on with scouting and it also requires an opponent who isn't that good tbh. Quite fun though!

all i do when i see im floating resources is, build more units... :P just keep your buildings as control groups (i have mine from 7 - 0) and just spam the queue full of units, even if your at your supply limit, just keep them queued so if things die, they can start building immediately (also build supply structures obviously)

And what i cant understand is the matchmakin system. I lost 10/9 games becuase of beginners, I am in platinum leagues but i think some guys are in the bronze classes and I always get them as teammates.

@Vitaly: i guess there is always placement matches going on, they need to meet people from all leagues to judge their skill, apart from that, i guess it also factors in which players are online and since X- amount of matches are going on at all times it can be most of the diamond league are spoken for and the search is then expanded as i guess there is more players in teh lower tanks then at the top so the chances of getting lower league teammates or opponents is greater then the reverse

I try to keep my Average Unspent Resources as low as possible. It's a good idea to check this in the score screen and if it's too high it means you should have more unit producing buildings. As terran you can dump a lot of crystal in a barrack with reactor.
If you want to have Ghosts, Thors, or Battlecruisers you will need the vespene from one or more expansions.

At first I will choose some strategy for start (for example some eko build or rush build) then later in game I will addapt this build according to my opponent(s) play so my eko can be altered to defend if my opponent is going to rush or my rush can be altered to eko if my opponent is going to turtle himself.

If I am going for eko then making as many workers as possible -chronoboosting nexus for example, instead of chronoboosting gateway if I am going for rush.

I never expand (if not zerg) before I have 50 population because I suppose it is big unit loose so early at game. With zerg and eko build my expand goes at probably 20 population.

i found nice start for terran, first get 8 scv for minerals and get 9 th to build a barricade. when constructing first supply depot just make another scv for rafinery, next place barracks and add 2 scv for minerals and vespine and for the end close barricade with supply depot. Now u can go in MMM or eaven quick banshee.
