Poll: It Builds Character

Poll: It Builds Character

While it was good, ole' Jimmy Raynor who kicked the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty campaign into overdrive, his revolution certainly wouldn't have been as epic if not for the rich and diverse cast of supporting characters at his side.

From the grizzled Tychus Findlay to the fiercely loyal Matt Horner, we're able to learn more about these characters by playing through their missions in the single-player campaign. Each supporting mission storyline is unique and immersive in its own way, but which one did you enjoy playing through the most?

If you're unable to recall which missions relate to each character's development, here's a quick list for you to reference:

Ariel Hanson

The Evacuation
Outbreak
Safe Haven/Haven's Fall

Gabriel Tosh
The Devil's Playground
Welcome to the Jungle
Ghost of a Chance/Breakout

Matt Horner

The Great Train Robbery
Cutthroat
Engine of Destruction
Media Blitz

Tychus Findlay

Smash and Grab
The Dig
The Moebius Factor
Supernova
Maw of the Void

Zeratul

Whispers of Doom
A Sinister Turn
Echoes of the Future
In Utter Darkness

Ariel Hanson. I played the campaign as Brutal for the first time, because I wanted a challenge out of the game. It was really intense and made all the cinematics between missions that much more exhilarating. I just loved it when I barely cleared Gates of Hell with 2 marines alive and I saw the cinematic "Card to Play" for the first time. Spot on with the feeling I was having! ^^

Anyway, I enjoyed Zero Hour and Gates of Hell most. The idea of characters giving missions felt lame every time I watched the briefings, but I enjoyed playing all of Ariel Hanson's missions on Brutal. That might be because they were all pretty easy. You really experience the game differently when it takes every chance imaginable to kick you in the teeth. :P

Make no mistake, I enjoyed all of the game. I simply listed my favorites above.

Just loved Zeratul missions, single OP dark templar just walking through the Zerg swarm. Also loved Hornerns Train robbery (love robbing trains), Media blitz was also alot of fun.
Kinda glad that Blizz mixed up the fun and good missions between each story and dident make 1 story the best and the rest lacking.

@AcidSkass: yeh the train robbery was an epic level i loved it, but i gotta say, i found zeratul's missions to be the best, the one where your escaping from kerrigan had me on the edge of my seat not blinking :P i did like the evac missions with the colonists aswell, good challenges on those levels

Missions for Swann and Kachinsky are epic, liked them so much! :) But, though really good characters.

For main characters in game my favorite is Tosh, very nicely developed character and outstanding voice acting! The moment I saw him and first dialog I was into him. Also, his missions are epic and twisted, specially the Breakout where you have to choose and its hard moral dilema, but you got a chance to see Tosh making some difference and doing good thing for galaxy and against Dominion.

zeratul misions compeletly, the dig and the maw of the void missions of Tychus missions, all missions but cutthroat from matt missions and, lastly, evacuation and out break missions of ariel.
none of tosh missions were good enough ( i give credit to breakout / ghost of a chance ) but they were unbalancedly hard and overwhelming even in hard mode.

The mission which i liked from Ariel Hanson missions were: Outbreak and Haven's Fall.
Matt Horner:Media Blitz.I enjoyed killing Dominion dogs with the Odin lol.
Tychus Findlay:The Dig,I felt like a God with that Laser thing, and Maw of the Void,I felt good making a battlecruiser army and owning the Mothership.
The only mission from Tychus Findlay which I didn't liked that much was Supernova, becasue I don't like to be in a rush,I don't like missions with time and things like that.
And from Zeratul i liked:Whispers of Doom.It was soo damn nice to assist High Templar Karras there.
I also liked Echoes of the Future:Damn, seeing the dead Overmind was soo damn epic and Tasaddar ofcourse.
And In Utter Darkness=5 stars.

Tosh, Tosh, Tosh, Tosh, i loved the feel of the first and second mission, it felt so old school with the goliaths and the unique lava rise on devils playground, these two missions where the best for me, but as a character, there felt more to be done because he played no role to the overall story, but the missions where great.

I really loved the whole storyline around Ariel Hanson and the Agria refugees, especially the two last missions, Safe Haven and Haven's Fall. Even though this is not the only mission where your choice affects the outcome, I think this is the one where that decision weights the most, no matter what it actually is.

Both paths lead to two very interesting insights on Raynor's personality and his past experiences/failiures: on one side, he is presented with the chance to have a normal life on Haven, which he knows he can no longer have; on the other, he suffers through the same hopelessness he felt when he failed to save Kerrigan from the swarm.

Overall, having played through SC1 and Broodwar, I think the SC2 campaign actually managed to turn out even better.

Tychus was probably the best supporting character for me, but to be honest, the whole 'getting to know them' bit felt a little tacked on. It didn't really flow well with thye rest of the gameplay. I think it would have been better to have more in-depth pre- and post-mission cutscenes, or just at certain key campaign moments (so that we don't have to sit through an epic every time we rescue some colonists).

I also really enjoyed the development of the newscasters. Donny Vermillion's 'I had a brother on Tarsonis' moment was probably the most poignant moment in all of the cutscenes.

Overall the campaign was almost the same as the old Starcraft. It was entertaining and worth the time. But i missed the wow factor which was at the first version. I would give the Zeratul missions about 95%, the rest is about 80-65%.

Overall campaign was awsome and every mission was very playable. I think mainpoint people have is that campaign was indeed good but story jumps around and players miss feeling you are doing something great until very end. This felt more like first starcraft game before story triggers and people get know some facts and most things are still hidden. Well it have been so long from bw, maybe this is new first starcraft game. I know it cannot be pure epic feeling allways for every mission. You like to learn something is good thing but remember most people doesn't mostly understand deeper purpose of story but later when they really start think and link things.

If you want to good tip how to improve. Poll is about certain part of campaign but I rather see there was some good missions even on "worse" parts. Hanson missions are good design but it feels little outside of main story. Helping colonist once on first mission feels right and makes sense but anything after that should have left out. I take it as Matt Horner missions was almost like main plot at first part of game and continues with artifact search. Deal after all is try free people from control of Dominion. Nice missions and gave you idea you were doing something before bigger events. Enemy just feels little passive on last mission. Artifact search just feels little confusing because it almost feels you are doing something without purpose, Jimmy feels little Harrison Jones and goes for ancient stonehunt. Tosh missions were short, didn't make much sense before last mission but this last mission was totally worth it. Maybe we see more Nova in future.

It's not hard guess why people like Zeratul's missions. Not only you get play protoss in terran campaign but aswell it makes much sense to story and gives Raynor new purpose to save Kerrigan. Zeratul explains events and opens more mysteries.

I think most people enjoyed last part of game; Assault on Char. That is style you should aim for. Don't make people make decisions like Colonists or Protoss, Tosh or Nova. Take out air or ground was good one. Rather have tactical choices.

@Flint: You make excellent points. Loved Char, did not find artifact hunting etc. that interesting an idea (even if the missions themselves were always nice). As a saving grace, there were nice conversations between each mission on the Hyperion. That kept the proper feeling in the campaign and you did not completely lose yourself in pointless missions.

Definitely the Zeratul and Gabriel Tosh story lines. I've loved Zeratul and Protoss characters overall ever since StarCraft 1, and as soon I saw the cutscene where Zeratul appears before Jim Raynor I couldn't stop playing until I'd cleared the Zeratul storyline. Also, getting the Zeratul portrait was a must. ;) I also enjoyed the Tosh storyline for it's fun challenging maps. Both The Devils Playground and Welcome To The Jungle were fastpaced races against the clock. The lava rising and the Protoss closing off the gas sources. They were probably my favorite maps from the Wings of Liberty campain, after Whispers of Doom and Echoes of the Future.

Zeratul missions due to the Heroic - Feel of the whole thing. Even though I'd play wc3 for that, it's nice to have variation. Nothing wrong with Gabriel Tosh's last mission either though.

Props to you, SC2 developers. The Campaign is good.
