StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 11

In part eleven of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers more of the community’s most burning lore questions.
Question: In times of peace, what do templar, judicators, khalai, and Nerazim do?
Answer: Practice, man, practice!
Question: Throughout Wings of Liberty, Kerrigan invaded several planets and systems around the Koprulu sector in search of the artifact pieces. As a result of this, she must have come across several new strains to assimilate into the zerg army. Through this exploration, have there been new zerg strains introduced to the Swarm?
Answer: The Swarm did indeed encounter lots of new genetic material! There was not time to incorporate these strains before the battle on Char, but the Swarm is still aware of the other types of essences out there.
Question: Why haven't the protoss advanced in tech over the course of the games?
Answer: The protoss are an inward-looking race. They feel they achieved the perfect approach to technology and civilization long ago, and now they have little interest in changing. There are certainly protoss innovators, but in general they prefer steady, methodical progress. The protoss basically value stability above all. New tech has a way of changing everything.
Question: Raynor and Zeratul had a vision. We learned it was the Overmind's and that it showed the future (or a possible future). But how and why did the Overmind have this vision in the first place?
Answer: The Overmind's consciousness was molded by the entity referred to here as the Dark Voice. During that process, the Overmind was exposed to some of the Dark Voice's plans for the future. Scattered, confused images, sensations, ideas, concepts. Nothing clear or concrete. That vision was a narrative the Overmind constructed from bits and pieces, and it was about all that the Overmind could glean from the time spent with the Dark Voice.
Question: Is there any chance that the Swarm could manifest some kind of compassion if the zerg stopped being driven by the singular goal of protoss destruction?
Answer: The mandates and operating parameters that kept the Overmind from having complete free will were mostly subverted when the Queen of Blades, an infested terran who retained much of her sapience, took over. (As I've said elsewhere, there was still some influence from the Dark Voice, as she had lots of zerg mutagen floating around in her system, but her non-zerg sapience freed her up a great deal.)
From that point on, the zerg became capable of acting in whatever way their leader was capable of acting. But why would the leader of the Swarm ever want or need to show compassion? Compassion would not serve to grow the Swarm, and it's unlikely any race would ever accept the Swarm as allies or equals.
Question: If the zerg are biological life-forms, how can they survive traveling across the universe without any air, shields, or armor suits?
Answer: They can adapt to handle those environments. The question of how they can do things without tools is a uniquely human way to look at a problem. When we can't do something, we build a tool to do it for us. A race that can evolve and adapt so rapidly and so well simply doesn't think that way. As an example, there are creatures that thrive on the bottom of the ocean here on Earth, in places where our tools and equipment have only recently allowed us to go.
Question: The "new" Jim Raynor seems kind of weak. He seems to have forgotten about Fenix and all the abominations Kerrigan has done, and more than that, he killed his best friend for her. He is no longer the mighty badass warrior from SC1. Why is that?
Answer: When people go through traumatic events, it takes a toll on them. They process it for a long time afterward and try to cope in different ways. The Jim Raynor in Wings is a man who has been to Hell and back many times, and it has certainly changed him.
Who do you think is more heroic: a character who has been through all that pain and suffering, yet manages to overcome his trauma, climb back to his feet, and engage in badassery; or a character who is just always badass? I know which one I think, but opinions may vary. J
Question: Do zerg breathe in space, or do they bring oxygen (or whatever they breathe) with them?
Answer: Most zerg are not adapted for space travel by themselves. They would be aboard larger zerg that are adapted for it, like leviathans. Any zerg that you see in space either has vast stores of oxygen within it or has been adapted to not require oxygen. Depends on the particular adaptation you're talking about!
Question: Why does Tychus Findlay, who always smokes a cigar in his armor, never get choked?
Answer: I'd like to say it's because he's got special air-circulation pumps. But the truth is, he's just that tough.
Question: Is there any history between Tychus Findlay and the girl on his armor?
Answer: The girl is Kyla Velassi, a popular entertainer who is featured in the text crawl at the bottom of the UNN news segments. She has an entire storyline that plays out there, if you can manage to read it.
That decal is already on his armor when he comes out of cold sleep. So either someone put it there while he was out of it, or Kyla has been around a long time and is still going strong. The celebrities of the Koprulu sector may just have their own version of Botox!
If you’re looking for more lore, here’s part 1 of our StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9 and part 10. We’ll have many more answers to your burning questions in the weeks to come.

Blizzard is treating us like fools, it is an insult.
There are so many problems with Mengsk (some that you pointed out) that it can fill an entire article.
Just, don't get your hopes up for HoTS, better have low expectations or none so you can have at least some nice surprises.
Even though I have alot of problems with much of the starcraft II story, it is still the official sequel to the game I am most passionate about. Mayhap that my worries or criticism will be ignored, but that doesn't mean I won't voice them. By presuming that the storyboard for WotS won't or can't be changed for the better anymore I'd basically be giving up on the game story i'm most passionate about - I can't do that!
Though I don't agree with every point he makes, he does hit the nail on the head as to why the story is so, so bad!

i would like to know in the heart of the swarm we will have
1) the possibility with the thor to launch the nuke
2) if just the multiplayer version will be sold
3)if the durration to launch the nuke could be shorter. its launching time--> 20 seconds is too much. it is almost impossible to use it somewhere. and why also when i launch my nuke my oponent can see a red point where i launch it and also he is notified? nor in protos nor in zerg no its action is offered to me .
Although I don't always find the answers as satisfying as I would like, I want to say that I quite enjoy the Q&As overall. I certainly view the story more positvely (or perhaps less negatively) than I did before they began.
It not like you actually have a masterplan for your storyline and your characters layed out,
but that you actually make things worse with each Blog.
How about you reassess your entire storyline, before posting something alike that.?
Some of us actually played the game in 1998, played the AddOns before BroodWar AAAAAND DID read the Books before WoL.
Your answers are just a sad example of beeing unable to keep up : (
Sry Vaneras.. I tried to be polite o.o!
If it was, he would have gone right into the mouth of hell on Tarsonis to try to get her out.
And this is why everything seems so out of place between BW and WoL. If there would have been a love story between the two in SC, then yes, some of these changes would have been accepted.
But he swore that he would see her dead, he never made any attempts in SC to turn her back from the murderous QoB,...even by saying something like: "Oh Kerrigan remember our love, hold on to that feeling!", because there was no deep love to speak about.
I was very surprised when Horner tells Tychus that they were shacked up. What, shacked up? How come we didn't know that in SC?
Now, if indeed you want to put this storyline into the game, fine, no problem. But don't do this out of the blue, don't make this change of mind somewhere off-screen and please, give us a reason as to why he changed his mind. Love is not enough, since, well it is something Blizzard added in WoL. And all that, getting over grudges thingy, is not a cause, it is an outcome of a change in personality.
If I have to go back to read a book in order to understand some issues in WoL, guess what, the game failed to address the issues.
The same thing happened with the Prometheus viral campaign before the films' launch. So many interesting things were addressed in the viral campaign that they were left out from the film. Some defenders of the film were saying, "go check the Prometheus website, you will know why such and such characters had such and such motivation". What? WTF? It's a film and characters' motivations should be made known within the film, not in a halfass campaign that many people didn't know about.
Pixel, think before posting comments. For Aiur sake, think!
If it would have been, they would have left of at the Events of AvP #1. But frankly.. How It should Have Ended explains the PlotHoles and how to fix it just perfectly.
As for Starcraft2. The Main Story Arc is very well explained inbetween the Installaton.
While during the Game you learn Raynor is an Alcoholic Warhero and Kerrigan is back.
You have to deal with the Situation, and the rest lays ou for you a bit inbetween...
Thats Starcraft2.
I bet my !@# of, that you never actually read the pdf / rtf coming along with Starcraft1,
where the entire Story around the Korpula Sector is explained.
Because, judging by your example: you simply wanna play the game.
I bet you never played the Bonus Mission (DLC) for Broodwar or the
Nintendo64 Version of Starcraft?
MAJOR SPOILER - Stukov is alive.
Deception, Mercenaries II, and Resurrection IV
http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Resurrection_IV
There is a lot of Story explained and in ORDER to understand a great scheme of things,
you can not just play 1 Game and hope to learn everything.
Its like Watching Star Wars - Episode 2, and you think you know aaaaal about the Clone Wars and the Jedi..
You actually didn't understand what I was saying about two different ways of telling a story. THIS STORY IS A GAME STORY, if some main events are described in books or in other media and then you have a game-sequel based on those events in the books, guess what, you will leave many players gobsmacked, because, many players would not have read that particular information. THIS IS A STORY BASED ON A GAME!
Just like Prometheus made a mistake by giving lots of information through the viral marketing and left it out from the film, Starcraft II made this mistake as well. As a film viewer (just like as a gamer) I don't have to follow the viral campaign or to read books to understand the motivations of a character within a film or a game.
As a game per-se, Starcraft II failed to address many aspects and this is because Blizzard assumed things about us, the gamers.
Imagine if, in between two films, all the viewers would be required to read a book to understand the things that happen in the sequel. It's stupid, you just don't do it.
And by the way, if the books were so important why wasn't a required reading before playing the game or weren't addressed during the installation?
I don't have to read a book to understand why Raynor had such a drastic character change. I mean, how hard would have been to have a small cinematic actually describing events in between the 4 years?
I find it offensive that in the last Q&A, Brian Kindregan admitted that they made mistakes and now he is acting as if we are stupid and we don't understand.
P.S. The WoL installation explains only the Starcraft story, not the Brood War.
...
Oh, and another thing, 100 great Clone Wars stories wouldn't make Star Wars Episode II a good film in a million years!
Sorry for my poor english.
Tychus character is much more complex in my opinion than you stated, he was Jim's best friend, he's struggling with the betray or die choice, i saw tears in his eyes at the WoL ending, when he knew, either way his friendship for which he got into prison btw. is over. To be honest? I would choose that kind of man over QoB, or saved Kerrigan(hopefully, yeah let's cross fingers)every single time. Maybe it wasnt Teletubby like, i don't mean wussy like, i just think it was kinda childish for what Raynor was through and Blizzards explanations in that matter particulary aren't holding together.
As it was in the end, Tychus had no reason (and was given no reason by our hero) to side with Raynor.
they maay not even know what the DarkVoice is by now and just needed a new mysteriours Opponent.
But it stands to reason, that the Xel'Naga my have developed along the journy to Godlike creatures, who is to say that other species havent done the same?
@ Mask:
Takin by the suggestions, Tychus Findley will return as an Infested Terran.... I wouldnt waste any money there
