Developer's Corner: 1v1 Game Balance

Since the release of Wings of Liberty, the StarCraft II balance team has been diligently studying how the game is being played, playing it ourselves, and seeing how evenly the three races match up on the battlefield. While we regularly examine Battle.net player data and statistics from all regions, the information we're examining in this blog was pulled exclusively from the North American region for simplicity's sake. 

Protoss are played 38.5% of the time.
Terran are played 38.0% of the time.
Zerg are played 23.5% of the time.

These are overall percentages, but they're mirrored in nearly the same exact separation through each of the leagues. This clearly shows that zerg are played less often than the other races. When we look at things like the Top 200 we like to have this data in-hand so we can ensure that it's proportionate to the amount of each race actually being played. We don't want to have a huge chunk of zerg players sitting somewhere further down unable to rise through the ranks.

Let's take a look at win percentages on a race-versus-race basis. This is something else we look at to see how matchups are faring over many games. These numbers take individual player skill into account, which helps to avoid the 50% win/loss percentage effect that the matchmaking system can impart on straight win/loss ratios.

Win % in Diamond (accounting for player skill)
49.6% win rate for Protoss when fighting Terran.
52.8% win rate for Protoss when fighting Zerg.
49.6% win rate for Terran when fighting Zerg. 

Win % in Platinum (accounting for player skill)
56.3% win rate for Protoss when fighting Terran.
47.3% win rate for Protoss when fighting Zerg.
44.5% win for Terran when fighting Zerg. 

Win % in Gold (accounting for player skill)
61.0% win rate for Protoss when fighting Terran.
61.1% win rate for Protoss when fighting Zerg.
49.5% win rate for Terran when fighting Zerg. 

Win % in Silver (accounting for player skill)
63.6% win rate for Protoss when fighting Terran.
50.7% win rate for Protoss when fighting Zerg.
51.6% win rate for Terran when fighting Zerg. 

Win % in Bronze (accounting for player skill)
59.0% win rate for Protoss when fighting Terran.
55.1% win rate for Protoss when fighting Zerg.
45.4% win rate for Terran when fighting Zerg. 

As you can see there are some issues with Protoss vs. Terran in many of the leagues.  From our own play experience, as well as feedback from the community, this matches pretty closely with what we're already aware of. We're working on solutions. What we're also aware of is that while the numbers don't necessarily support the need for zerg changes across all leagues, the feedback from the community as well as our own play experience tells us that improvements are necessary to make zerg matchups feel and play better. 

The balance changes in our next patch will primarily focus on improving the zerg. 

Here are a few of the changes we currently have planned: 

  • We're increasing roach range. This will allow roaches to be more effective in large groups, giving the zerg more options in the mid to end game. 
  • Fungal Growth will now prevent Blink, which will give zerg a way to stop endlessly Blinking stalkers which can be very challenging to deal with in large numbers.
  • The Barracks are going to require a Supply Depot, which will impact a lot of early terran reaper pushes.
  • The reaper speed upgrade will require the Factory, which is meant to weaken a lot of the early terran reaper attacks that dominate so many matches, especially in team games.
  • We're making a number of increases to the health of zerg buildings, which will make the very vulnerable zerg technology structures more resistant to raids.  We don’t expect these hit point changes to have a super significant impact on the game, but the current numbers felt way too low.

We want our avid and talented StarCraft II players to know that we're here, we're listening, and that our intent is to continue making careful and measured approaches to balance based on community and fansite feedback, our numbers and data, watching pro players and tournaments, and our own time on Battle.net playing the game alongside you

allright enough with the reaper cryingXD if you cant cope that much and change your tacs go play a diffrent race yes it sad times that reaper role has been changed no there not completly crap they cant still kill workers just as fast as well as ransack buildings they jsut do it to expansions ratehr then main bases now

According to the stats that are presented the protoss win most of the games and then in order to balance the game the reapers (i.e terrans) are "weakened". This does not seem very logical... Changing the roach range, preventing blinking seems to be more sensible.

@Lhem: I noticed that too. not only that, terran has better precentage vs zerg only in bronze and silver. if the zergs have better statistics vs terran in higher leagues, how could they be underpowered?
if your going to make us get a rax after SD is done, at least make it longer to make zerlings so we could have ONE marine out.

@maniac: When u spot scv trying to kill your workers, just go and attack with your own workers... u will have more workers, than him because of travel time, so gg for him :)

@Trooter: you base that on playing 5 1 vs 1 games? in which you lose 4 games? your not even ranked bronze yet, have you even tried playing for instance zerg? i dont think so.

@Sharko: firstly in defence of trooter did you fail to notice the 105 co op games? as well as 2v2 3v3 and 4v4 1v1 may be more dependent on the person solely but he has as much right to discuss as you or me now in counter to trooter yea vikings are good marine marader are fine ghosts is fine hellion is fine seigetank is fine thor is fine med,banshee,raven,b.c are fine whats wrong with terran again?

I think the reaper has no roome to live atm.
reaper rush is gone and they are too expensiv/take too long for mid to late game. Perhaps a hp buff or less gas would make them a option for mid to lategames.

@Hardes: I still believe that reapers isn't the problem. Remove supply requirement for barracks and make reapers as they were when sc2 released. These aren't the problems with that race... and buff some more the Zerg.

@sfixterman: i dunno about the reapers they are very good at there job as for zerg buffing iv yet to see an effective counter to bane/zergling rush except for mass tanking(for terran)

@sfixterman: i agree, the main problem is that zerg has for instance no early anti air, and that some units are broken :
meaning the neural parasite ability is useless vs human players,
roaches dont get used much because one banshee would own em all. hydra's are only good for some base defense since they are too slow to retreat when not on creep, for base defense vs air queens are the better option. 3 ravens own 40 mutas by using seeker missille..
and zerg has no answer against a fe terran using planetary fortress and going turtle to get mass tank/thor. zerg cant break the turtle, and theres nothing zerg has that can answer mass tank thor, i think neural parasite was suppose to be the counter but its broken. infested terrans dont work because the instant free imba scan of terrans also detects cloaked units, this is op.

Blizz did a great improvement on zerg with the roach range upgrade but they nerfed Terran a bit to much IMO and we can see by the words of Idra at the final enterview at MGL Washignton that they did...cause when he was aksed what he tought about SelecT and the overall play he awsered that Big Terrans like SelecT and others, based their play in heavy drops on enemys base and with the nerf they can´t do that so well anymore...so i think blizzard should start asking the pros what do they think and not just base they´re "game balancing" on %s or own play because in the end if Top Terran Godlike Players like select cant play so well like they used to because of the nerf, how can "mortals" like normal player can???

2cents right here :D

@NanT: This patch improved a lot of things and the old builds and play styles aren't good now for terrans, it will take some time before all terran players will get used to this changes, now we have to w8 and watch what will happen and then try to decide wether it is too hard to play terran or not, now it is just diferent.

People, people. We have to put this discussion(rampage) into perspective.
Starcraft 1 and Starcraft Broodwar was far from balanced and complete when released, and even after a couple of months of updates.

I mean, the replays in original Starcraft never really worked properly! :P

But kudos for all of you saying the game wont ever be properly balanced and that the game will never work for eSports..

I do have trouble when a toss player first locks down my base with cannons and then goes in with air. Cuz protoss air units are just dope.

In team games photon canons just seem too strong to deal with, especially early in the game. In my experience canons are mostly used for cheese, and i think blizzard needs to adress it since the weakening of terran is justified with avoiding cheese tactics.

@Exigo: @Exigo: I knew it, all kids would cry about terran AI doesnt win every game for them no more, now u have to BUILD A FACTORY ALSO!, omg its just to much to ask...for me to play terran is to abuse. Its no skill what so ever to win with them atm...Wanna win, just go terran... sometimes u lose since u perhaps eat pizza while the uber stressed zerg is trying everything, but just cant get passed the insane dmg output from terran, between the pizza chunks just press stim, and then 100 lings died before they even came close...GG terran, GG BALANCE, GG blizzard not even trying to make this game esports or balanced like sc1/bw is. Atm its a joke to play 1v1, and atm shame on all players that enter tournaments going with abuse terran.

@Salai: your calling them kids? you just seem to be spaming the same shiz that stim is rigged and terrans are skilless instead of writing a wall of sarcasm and reapting yourself that terran is rigged why dont you state your ideas on what should change for instance when playing terran i stuggle agaisnt a toss pylon rush with stalkers i treid getting maruders with stim but due to needing to build a tech lab on each racks i was out massed(2nd try) whilst relying on marines dint work ether so instead(3rd game i faced the same peep three times on the same map 0.0) i got ghosts with my marines emped there sheilds and brought a stale mate where i was able to bring up some maruders to do the killing blow now to me that sounds like a good game whilst being tacticle while he kept warping in stalkers i changed and after a while counterd if green dont work use red as it were
