1) General information about the patching process.
The patching issues are often caused by limited permissions on the computer or incorrectly configured security software that prevents the update from starting or being applied correctly. If the permission settings/antivirus software is not configured properly the patching may fail and the game client will not be updated, thus making the login screen unavailable. The patching takes place in a couple of steps. From 0-70% the files are being downloaded and then from 70-100% the update is being installed. Both of these phases can be affected by the same issues with permissions or security software which is why, it is very important to have your Windows system and any protective software you may have, configured properly. StarCraft II requires all the previous versions of the game available so the users can watch old replays and load saved games made while using the old versions of the game. Due to that, every time the patch is applied a new executable file (.exe for PC, .app for Mac) is created and the antivirus and firewall exceptions need to be added to that new file. These exceptions are simply permissions for a program to be able to freely use network connection to access Internet. They can be set in the settings of any antivirus/firewall programs. Once an exception is set the program should no longer be restricted by the security software. Bear in mind that all the old executable files (.exe for PC, .app for Mac) also need to be granted exceptions. You can find all these application files in the Versions folder located in the StarCraft II directory. |

3) Patch installation troubleshooting.
If you are receiving “The patch could not be applied (MD5 mismatch)” or “there were multiple error saving data” error it is very likely that your game client is corrupted and needs to be repaired. If that’s the case please run the repair tool located in your StarCraft II/Support folder to make sure your StarCraft II installation is error free. If the patch installation continues to fail or gets stuck between 70% and 100% please follow the steps below. If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 please make sure that you start the launcher by right clicking on the game icon and selecting "Run as administrator". Also please make sure that your Windows user account has the permissions to make changes to the StarCraft II folder. You can also create a new Windows User Account with administrator rights to make sure that you have the permission to read/write in the StarCraft II folder. If you're running the game on a Mac, please ensure you're logged onto OS X with an administrator account. Additionally, please make sure that your antivirus is not preventing the patch updater from writing the files to the game folder. You may want to temporarily disable the security software before attempting to patch the game again. If you have the possibility to reinstall your antivirus, you can remove the software completely from your computer and then test if the updating process is working. |

4) Reinstallation and additional information
Should none of these steps work for you please completely remove the StarCraft II game from your computer and install it again. Make sure that you delete the Blizzard Entertainment folder and empty the %temp% directory prior to reinstalling. Once you have installed the game again, attempt to apply the patch and see if the problem persists. Should the patching fail again, please create a thread on the forum and describe which above steps you have already tried to resolve your problem and provide us with the following information: Your Operating System. Internet connection you are using. Antivirus software installed on your PC. |
