Topic Horrible, horrible writing in the campaign.

I'm not one to just randomly @#!##. I love the game and I give credit when due, and in many of SC2's elements Blizzard outdid themselves. The races were updated and altered while remaining true to the original. The missions are versatile and interesting, some are gimmicky but they always fun. And the cinematics are breathtaking.

So why is the writing so bad?
"Its aint over yet you son-of-a-@#!##!" *shoots at screen!*
"I don't trust that guy..." (Maat to Raynor about Tychus)
"I don't trust that guy..." (Tychus to Raynor about the Specter guy)
"At some point we have to choose who we are."
The whole newscast crap... I mean, WE GET IT! We got it after the first broad cast! "lol that Kate is gonna say something good about Raynor so we can see its propaganda! lol!"
"You can't fight fate!" "Why do you run from your fate?" "It is the fate of the world..."

Seriously? Blizzard, come on...
What happened to the company that made Diablo, with its doomed, terrified town folk and random creepy poetry. (I can see what you see not/ vision milky then eyes rot)
What happened to the people who gave us the first Starcraft with its rollercoaster like plot line?

The original SC and WC3 were excellent games story wise. They aimed high in terms of character development and integrity and did it successfully.
I don't think I can discuss the SC2 plotline until we get to see at least half of it, but what I'v seen so far is just crap.
Kerigan, the self claimed "Queen @#!## of the universe" left us in Brood Wars as the leader of the Zerg but also as someone who is brutal and manipulative, but not fully heartless. She could have killed everyone involved but she chose to let the people who helped her live.
Our new Kerrigan spends her days stalking Zeratul and mumbling about Fate like some drunk hobo in the street.

I am underwhelmed and quite honestly, disappointed. I know you guys can do better. Well, I hope you guys can do better. The Starcraft universe deserves to be more than a C-grade western in space.

*So, I'm not allowed to write bi- tch in the forum, but Blizzard can use the word in-game? XD

I agree about the newscast things. They were TOO obvious. Most of the other stuff was ok.

Agreed. And notice just how many complaints there are about the same things, which means a lot of people are frustrated. I hope they will fix this in upcoming sequels starting with Heart of the Swarm. Multiplayer is perfect, now, get on with the storyline please!

the reputation of dialogue in computer games is well deserved, but for the majority of people playing it, it shouldn't be their primary focus; I've seen worse writing but I try not to focus on it too much when all this kickass game is exploding in the background ;p

So ironic, you don't like the newscast stuff (yeah it is bad) yet you have the portrait, lol.

Well the starter avatar looks better :D

Also, i noticed they often used the same screens for all chit chatter on the Hyperion.

Talk to Tychus and his mouth moves in exactly the same pattern etc.

I found it a bit annoying after talking to them 100++ times.
UAF
I agree.

The story is below the grade I've expected from Blizzard.
Yes, its better then many games out there. But that's because Ok-ish is better then crap.
I expect more then Ok-ish from Blizzard.
Starcraft 2 had the fan and budget to be epic in every espect, and Blizzard missed in several (Story, B.Net).

Starcraft 1 was dark, surprising, unexpected. Brood War too.
Starcraft 2 feels like it was written by enthusiastic, but not very talented, Starcraft 1 fans.
The devil advocates of the team, the one responsible for trying to shoot down any "hey, wouldn't it be cool if---" idea simply didn't do their job when it came to the story.

I do hope there will be a series increase in the quality in Heart of the Swarm.

The explenation behind splitting the game to 3 parts was "Hey, we have such a cool, complicated story that we need 3 times the levels per race just to tell it!".
Well, so far Wings of Liberty doesn't justify it at all.

OP, people have been making a lot of different threads about this. You are not alone.

The most annoying thing about the Blizzard games since WoW, is that every single name, every sentence, every mission and quest has to be a reference or quote from some book, movie or song.

Is it a lack of creativity, or are they just trying to be funny? Because it isn't funny at all and completely destroys immersion.
Easter eggs, it's enough to put a handful of them into the entire game.

The storytelling was pretty messy, yes. The writers must have really suffered from the syndrome where you burn for something so much you throw out tons of ideas, and you really like them all, but in your haze you fail to see all the loose ends because you're just too damn excited. I know how this is...
Another thing I didn't really like is how you select your missions. You get to choose from planet A B C D E and F, but you are not made aware of where the different planets are located in relation to where you are at the moment and so there is no sense of what you logically should be doing first. I mean, zigzagging around in the galaxy is pretty inefficient use of energy isn't it...?
In my first playthrough I didn't have any sense of the timeline at all, it felt like I was timetravelling a lot...

The "star map" used to be a overviewing map from outside the Hyperion, where you could see where the battlecruiser was parked and what planets were in the closest proximity to you. I still wonder why in the heck they scrapped this, it was so awesome. Also, you could click on each planet to recieve a voiceover that described the planet and what tech you should be using there. It was just great! But instead we got the simple row of planets to click on and a small briefing.

I LOVE the gameplay, the maps are a lot of fun, but the feeling through the story and knowing how just simple things like the star map could have looked like, just ruined a big part of it for me...

Also this. There was a bit too much "fun" in the story. A very quick example expressed by many others on these forums, the news reporter. In a strictly moderated community like the one Mengsk created, where propaganda means everything, that news reporter would have been removed from the face of the planet without a trace after the first slip of making Raynor sound like the good guy.
Blizzard, if you are really reading this, I plead to you to make the story gloomier and more realistic like it should be. We don't want a RTS version of the Goblin Starting zone in WoW.

I to thought that the writing in the game could have been better, esp when they have andy chambers of warhammer 40,000 fame, as one of the directors of the lore. Thought he might of brought a good old uk darker edge to it. Its still a fantastic game, just a lot of cheese in the writing.

I agree, the news reporter thing got old fast after the second newsbroadcast. I wasn't expecting 'witty' news with the same gag repeated over and over without any consequences in the story.

For now, the storyline is fairly jerky with almost all in between chapters all over the place. I couldn't tell wich mission was the one I was supposed to pick first, in short, I don't know wich planet/area comes before the other storywise. The exposure of Arcturus' genocide on Tarsonis left me puzzled. Was this the same Mengsk of Starcraft 1 who is very elaborate, intellectual and passionate in his speeches? What I saw in Starcraft 2 was a generic bad guy with a short temper.

I hope Blizzard takes these criticism to heart and make sure the next two chapters aren't like Wings of Liberty.

Gotta say, I quite liked the plot.
I mean, the continuations (and up-dates) from the first game were a very surprising touch. I did not expect that level of cross-game links.

The voice acting was not terrible (play the intro mission on DDO and you'll see what I mean, or even some of the cut-scenes in WoW).

Plot-wise... well, it may have been a bit predictable, but it didn't seem overly shallow/obvious. I admit, I didn't bother talking to some people since I knew what they were going to say, more or less.

What you saw in SC2 was not someone spreading propaganda to get himself to the top, someone playing the under-dog and saying "look at what these guys have done to people like me and you, Jim". You saw someone who thinks himself the undisputed Top Dog. Someone who no longer cares. Someone who's taken over everything. Power corrupts/changes.

After the butchering of Arthus, SC 2 was my last hope that Blizzard could still do a great story.

Alas that is not the case, the Terran story arc was so full of pointless estereotipes and filler that made the level design truly shine as one of best in an RTS.

In the end we will see them at Blizzcon patting themselves on the back, thinking they created a masterpiece.

Masterpiece? Not necessarily. Good game? Yes. If Warcraft or Diablo stories were also not full of those "pointless stereotypes" as you call them, then we probably live in different planes of existence.

Yeah sure, stereotypes are almost unavoidable unless you want to spend literally hours building the complex personalities of individual characters, but SC2 is well beyond that.

It's like if in diablo 3 we figure out that diablo and his brothers were trying to destroy the world of the living to keep the angels from using us as pawns to destroy the universe, with the main sub-plot being a love story between decard cain and bhaal (who is actually female, what a twist!).

OP, i couldn't write it better, story is crap and full of lack of common sense like fact that Raynor do not give %!!% that he has living bomb on his ship...

They change completely characters of Raynor, Kerrigan or Mengsk, they act/behavior completely different that the ones we know from Starcraft 1.

... that might actually be a better story than the one we are going to get
