Battle.net

I recently transported my computer to a friend's house and back, and ever since I came home SC2 has been damn near unplayable, with severe drop in performance overall.

Before the move I could play on High settings at 1920x1080 just fine, only a little lag in massive 4v4 battles (50+ units on screen). Now I have everything on medium at lower resolution (i think 1440x900), and it still lags too much to do anything whenever there's 10+ units on screen. What has happened?

Things I've tried:
- I opened the cabinet and checked to see if maybe one of the ram sticks had loosened, but everything looked fine (also system reports all 4 gigs)
- I cleared temporary files and such, over 2,5 gigs :-O
- I uninstalled CS Source, which was the only thing I installed while I was away
- I blew some dust out from the CPU and GPU fans
...nothing helps.

Everything else is the same as before the move, anyone got any thoughts on this?

Internet is fibre 25 Mbit, and I have Avast (which I turn completely off when I play SC2, or else the game crashes)

ok so let's see....
if something happened to your computer while you were at your friend, you can undo that using system restore

right click my computer>properties>on the left panel>System protection
a small window pops up, press "system restore"
follow on-screen instruction

choose a restore point which is before the date you went to your friend

system restore only removes system and program files, not personal files.
it is possible to lose some programs you installed, but that is the purpose of the exercise.

Okay, so I downloaded the antivirus programs and ran some scans. 4 trojans and 3 other things. Glad we got that out of the way.

Deleted the graphics adapter and reinstalled it.

Deleted Variables.txt and tried again.

Other than watching the sweeeet intro movie again, nothing changed. SC2 even recommended high settings on 1920x1080, but it was just as laggy as before.


Will try selective startup next time and see what happens. I'll even add frameratecap and frameratecapGlue =30 and see if it helps.

So I tried selective startup, put in frameratecap and -glue = 30.

Played a 3v3 with 1920x1080 (which is the recommended resolution of my screen) and everything on medium.

No noticeable improvement, FPS was probably down to 1 for maybe 5 seconds at one point...

Any suggestions?

I finally found the solution to all this!

SC2 now plays better than ever before, with no detectable lag and super smooth graphics.

How did I do it? Turns out the only thing that really worked was buying an i5 2500K 3,3 GHz, a GeForce GTX 560 Ti, a 120 Gig Vertex 3 SSD, 8 Gigs of DDR3 CL8 RAM, a bigass Noctua 14 mm CPU fan and an MSI P67A-GD65 B3, all connected to 650 Watts of Corsair power in a white Fractal Design Define R3 box.

StarCraft 2 now defaults to everything on Ultra/Extreme at 1920x1080, and runs a 2v2 with no hiccups whatsoever! :D

The only downside? (Besides costing me about 1300 €uros...) After half an hour of installing the game, sitting for another ~30 minutes waiting for 22(!) patches to install.

Was it worth it? It was soooooo worth it...
