Fixing "Random"
|
I like playing random, but one of the gripes I get is getting a single race for three consecutive games. It doesn't feel very random
Could we do something like random decreases the chance of getting the same race as the last time you went random? So it's still possible to get the same race game after game, but the chances are deminished. ie, say you have terran on your first random (33% chance), on your next random, terran goes down to 20%, whilst zerg and protoss have 40% chance each. Maybe on the third game if both games landed on terran, it gets decreased again to 10% - giving protoss and zerg 45% chance each. Thoughts? |

Random is in it's very name what it is, Random.
It is possible for you for the next 100 games to roll as Protoss just as it is as likely you could go the next 100 games as Terran or Zerg, it is equally as likely that you don't roll one of the three races 100 games in a row. |

It’s fine as it is right now IMO.
Sometimes i get annoyed after playing the same race over and over again, sometimes i feel like playing the same race again just to try again. I rather have random the way it is right now, in other words, random. It would not feel like random, if you sometimes did not get the same race over and over again. I would rather have it as simply being completely random, rather than have the system try to make me play each race after one another. If you get T a lot, and you don’t feel like playing as T, then queue as one of the other two races. Since if you dont want to play a certain race, then you should not queue as random. Don’t fix something that is not broken. |

Oh yes there bloody hell is. The odds of you geting one of the three races is 1 / 3 The odds of you NOT geting a specific race is 2 / 3 You are saying 1/3^100 = 2/3^100 If thats not wrong, i better sue my math teacher. |

I would say that it is much more random to get the same race 3 times in a row than to get each race every third time.
Random does *not* mean that you get each race equally often. It means that you have an equally large chance of getting a race for every game. Key word being "chance". If you played an infinite amount of games, you would get 1/3d of each race. The closer to infinity you get, the more exact this distribution becomes. If you play 20 games, those 20 may just as well all be the same race and it still isnt completely unbelievable. |
|
You should also know that the algorithm used to pick up a race is not actually random, but follows a very specific...algorithm.
|
It's about as random as it can get. Its an algorithm for creating a "random" number after all. Computers can't really do random, everything has to be a calculated sum, but although the computer's random number generation is not truly random its as close to it as possible so that it makes no difference. |

Reading this thread, I believe nobody knows what are the odds for this randomization?
Sure, computers can't do "true" random, only pseudo-random. But pseudo-random can still be (or not be) uniform. I suspect this randomization not being uniform: maybe there is a dependency (given the last races played, the next pick won't necessarily be 33% for each race). The randomization not being uniform does not mean that there must be a "privileged" race. For example: 50% chance same race and 25% for each other race. We could do stats and see what the odds really are. |

And I, would like blizzard to offer us the possibility to play "random" with the choice of the race i.e : P and Z, so that i would play toss or zerg and not terran. And with that, when the screen battle appears it would show the opponent that i am a "toss-zerg" random so that he knows i am not terran. Of course we can choose the races we'd like to play , T-Z; T-P; Z-P
That would be sooo cool ! |

Of course we can choose the races we'd like to play , T-Z; T-P; Z-P ...or you could just simply alternate in wich of the two races you want to pick. Hell, if you want to make it more "random" flip a coin: Heads = Zerg, Tails = Protoss. People take this whole random is cool concept way too far sometimes. |
Good idea actually, since that's what you're basicly doing anyway when playing random. On a more "serious" note. I can follow you on the "alternate between 2 races button", since some people don't like the idea of flipping coins, herp. But not sure why you think this whole idea about showing as "toss-zerg" is "cool". Sounds extremely pointless. |

No. People would choose their 2 best races and still get the advantage of having their race hidden.
Having the race hidden balances out having to learn 9 matchups, but it probably wouldn't be balanced with 6 matchups (one less race to learn). |
This is just getting old, what balances out you "having to learn 9 matchups" is that the mmr system will put you against opponents of equal skill level (yes you will get lower then by playing 1 race). Not sure why people think they need something extra at all. |
DeMusliM does the same bio opening in every game. Getting tanks only appears eventually in TvZ sometimes. DRG does mutas for almost every matchup. Still does the same build every game. The only one that has a slight change in their matchups so far, is protoss. PvP and PvT you can usually do the same builds in those matchups. PvZ you should do a FFE but you can get away with a 1gate expo on some maps like condemned ridge or taldarim. So really, you have to learn 1 build per race to be able to play decently as any race. Basic mechanics and game design knowledge will get you through the rest. Having your race hidden just makes it so your opponent can't use their own knowledge or basic mechanics properly for a full 3 minutes at the very least. |
