StarCraft® II

Give up or keep playing ?

I feel very depressed lately because i cant seem to get better at the game. i admit i dont play as much as i should but still i dont know how to get past low platinum i know you need talent and playing time if you want there i would like to get at least better like top platinum or low diamond (getting into diamond is my dream btw) I can cope with terran , problems with mech but i know how to do it, but i really get owned in ZVZ and ZVP. But i think ZVZ is the hardest.

How did you guys evolve ? How did you become stronger ? Is anyone who started in like top gold and now reached diamond ? Also anyone interested in helping me and play games with me ? pls elaborate on your answer because i have read a lot of : Play 12 hours a day or quit the game if your lame ....... you get the idea.

Is there a chance for me to ever get into diamond or i'm simply lame and this is my limit ?

I will add a replay in a few minutes ;)

I know what you mean. I bought the game at launch and got placed in bronze. In about 3 months I reached platinum, and I spent about a year there before I reached diamond.
Reaching diamond was amazing. I felt so good about myself.

In the end it all comes down to figuring out what you did wrong and focusing on not doing that error in the next game. Did you not scout properly? Are your predictions wrong? Are your mechanics not good enough? Expansion timing? How do you attack? When should you attack? How do you react better next time? You need to ask yourself all these questions. I also watch hdstarcraft, psystarcraft and cricketstarcraft. Obviously not all their vids but there's a lot you can learn from them.
Also download pro replays to see how they react to things.

That's pretty much it.
Good luck.

Heres my story.

Played Protoss at near launch, got bored and quit. Came back in season 4 (I think) as Zerg and get placed in gold. Didn't phase me at all, tried my hardest and got to what you see before you today (High diamond).

How'd I evolve? I could never really tell you as even I don't know myself. All this progress has been such a blure and I'm loving every victory as well as every bittersweet defeat.

Will I help you? If you add me on Battle.net and message me its possible. Most times I'm on Bnet is because I'm doing my usual 5 ladder games per day. But I'd be more then glad to help out if I get the moment.

My best tip to improve though is. Think about how much you want this and then tell yourself your going to do it. Set a routine daily schedule to play games; and above all control your emotions. Don't be pessimistic it will only hurt your ability and make it hard. Be very mad with yourself when you put on a poor performance and lose to dumb luck by your opponent; and never NEVER blame your opponent for your loss or blame balance. If you don't think its your fault you lost why would you try hard.

Ive never really tried to get better since I got out of Bronze, even when I switched to Terran I didnt look up guides to micro or anything, I just sort of played ladder, to learn to micro.

I started from Bronze, now I have been diamond for a looong time, this season I reached the top 1 diamond and I was playing almost entirely master leaguers untill I just got bored and now I havent played for like a week so I will most likely drop to rank 30 or something once again =(.

You improve by just watching youre own replays and accepting the fact that youre !@#$ and you will lose tons of games before improving.

-Personally I improve by just trying to focus on the basics all the time. Dont let terran kill you with silly dropship and dont mess up youre macro for 5 minutes while dealing with that silly dropship.

What generally people seem to forget, is the little math behind all this. I give an easy example to represent this.

Skill is our changing factor here.

At current (14.3.2012), lets assume that skill values are as follows:

masters: 400
diamond:250
plat:130
gold:70
silver:40
bronze:0-40

Remember that these values will RAISE CONSTANTLY, as people at the game keep getting better. You need 40 hyphotetical skill now to reach SILVER, when with equal skill you could get to PLATINUM with that same 40 skill.

Lets assume that you get one skill for each 10 games you play. With this math you could count it takes 400 games to silver, 700 to gold and so on up to those 4000 games for master, in average. Now the only problem is that division skill caps raise too, lets say by 10% each 2 months. This means that if you had played those 4000 games in 2 months, you wouldn´t get to masters anymore - the new limit there is 4400 games.

Well of course, these values are pulled from the sky and aren´t even very well thought. They should however give you a picture of the thing, that is exactly like that - just calculating those real values and comparing that to invidual skill/motivation would be a very complicated process.

IN SHORT; you might go up in skill, but keep in mind that the general level of gameplay is going up aswell.

I got better by writing down some build orders from the big names and practicing them
And play only 1n1s, the rest is not the right practice (if you wanna get better at 1v1)

that should get you high up

how i evolved

1 - when played terran i won games by all inning and by rushing marines or reapers but still got demoted to bronze (from gold)

skill increase

2 - started to allin protoss that tried void rush as well

switched zerg

3 - started to micro burrow roaches vs protoss

skill increase

4 - APM increase with zerg

skill increase

5 - started to loose macro games but eventually got better at macro

skill increase

6 - started to build spire faster and micro both muthas and speedlings/banelings

skill increase

7 - got into silver and got my !@# kicked by mass stalker a lot of games
got better at macro and defending drops and cannon rushes

skill increase

8 - was very bad vs zerg and protoss, but won like 8 out of 10 games va terran
...except mech terran :P
still died a lot to 4 gates (before nerf)

skill increase

9 - eventually got promoted to gold (was so happy)
got better at macro
started to use 300 army vs protoss
started to beat protoss and zerg a lot more than before
started to loose more vs terrans

skill increase

10 - got better at macro
got to hiest tech much earlyer now
started to allin FFE protoss a lot
learned infestors use (after buff)
learned timings to things
not forgetting upgrades as much anymore

skill increase

11 - today - trying my best to get into plat at least (i know i will never be Stephano or Idra) but i want to try (im 27 years old and work 10 hours/day)
still loose a lot of games (like 50%)
still a noob but i love the game !!
i still sometimes rage, but not as much as before (now i know why i loose)

So if you love the game, you should not quit just because of losses.

Well i will probably just repeat what a lot of people say but, check ur loosing replays and c what u did wrong, and check ur winning and c what u did right. check famous streamers like EGidra for the macro or ret for the macro, destiny for the decision making and destiny is really good at assume what the enemies next move is and i don't know a really good micro player but check at the details. the macro and micro will come to you the more u play.

you of course get better the more you play! gl =) don't give up! we can't loose anymore players =)

Im still very new to the game but i feel the same way like TC does. I started with Zerg, but just couldnt win any games so now im Terran. Results are better but i find the game much more boring for some reason. I dont even play ladder so much anymore. I guess im in a dillema. Keep using terran since them seem easier or go back to zerg since i like them a bit more but much harder for me to play.

i used to play toss but it was too easy and everything was just the same over and over again so that evantually made me bored of sc2 so i switched to zerg so now its fun ;D
also if you keep losing and you want to get better then go to 'bronze practice' in the chat channels since i mean you can practise 1v1 games against people the same level as you and people will obs and help you improve i mean its a great place if you ask me :)

Im usally around 20 diamond. And the moment I learned to spot cheese and not mess up the drone count early game I not forgetting OL I got to diamond pretty much.

The moment I started to get my timmings down a tad (managing the 7 gatesomething push from toss and the tank/marine move-out from 2 base terrans) I start to get to top 20 diamond.

If I stop messing up and getting supplyblock around 70 supply I would most likely reach top 8 diamond. A tad better micro I would reach master I think.

What I lose to 6 games out of 10 now is supplyblocking myself. 1 out of then is something early games that makes me get gas to late. 2 games or so because I just get outplayed by multitasking and just better micro. 1 game just !@#$ing up in some mayor way the first 6 min.

I played alot a few seasons ago, got into Diamond and was dropped back into platinum after a while and HATED myself for it. I wanted to be the best and so on and eventuelly I quit because of it.

Now I am back after not playng for a few seasons I play random instead of Zerg, and I am in gold and I just enjoy the game instead of obsessing about the league. Good games are good games regardless of league, and I suppose if I get better at playing I will get promoted anyhow :)
