Topic Why all the rubbish maps?

I often find myself looking through the custom maps and games that have been made and always find myself thinking "Why don't people make any good games?". On SC:BW there were tonnes of great custom maps, especially the defense games; Sunken Defense, Random Beacon Defense, Individual Random Defense. To name just three. Why have these not been recreated yet? All of the tower defense games on SC2 are just terrible, it seems people are too busy trying to show off what they can do and have totally forgotten how to make good maps. Go back to simple, addictive games.

As of yet I have only come across one custom game on SC2 that is worth playing, and that is The Card game, but since noone plays that anymore that is also obsolete.

Could someone who has the know-how to make sc2 custom maps pleeeeeeeeease recreate one or more of the following; Sunken Defense XY (Or clockwise), Random Beacon Defense, Individual Random Defense Gold, Random Unit Battle (The rnd unit battle I mean is the one w/ the two teams, where they each have a pylon to defend).

I like sunken def because you can build your own maze, but in all the new games the creeps allways cheat and go around or through, but some maps out there are close to fixing this.

The Random maps are good because random increases longevity, it means your build or play will never be the same, this is good :P

The system they built to try and leech money from the DOTA style game cost them all the community map developers, they all quit.

i also noticed the pathing for the AI is much much better in SC2 then in sc1 and sunken def wouldnt be as fun casue u cant build ur own maze in the same creative way... now if someone would manage to do something about it then hell yeah i would love a sunken def custom game.. i loved those on sc1

The problem is this:

It is hard to get your map on the front page. That is why people won't bother to begin making maps or they just release something they used a week on because they don't want to invest so much time in it.

I released a map "Infested Mothership" and it got played 100 hours in the first week. In the next week 30 hours and now it is 1 - 2 hours...

I used way to much time on it. However it was my first map and it was a great experience. I learned SO MUCH when I made that map.

The UI needs to be changed in a way it promotes good maps. This is what Blizzard is trying to do now as well, with the new Arcade system.

this x2, the current system fails in every aspect as it doesn't allow for maps that require skill to get a scene as well like dota since you only land with newbies and you can't host games with the right game mode and skill level.

Needless to say you also can't even get your map to be played which means that you can't test it either. The editor is a mess and just hella confusing (haven't touched it in a while but it was very buggy as well when I used it). I missed it in wc3 where I could start making a map by morning and have something playable by night. Host it get feedback and continue working.

To me Sc2 killed all the joy I had of developing and playing maps back in wc3 and man did I have a blast doing that. Really makes me sad to see blizzard killing of such a big scene like that which was basicly my hobby and what I did on my free time.

What we've ended up with is just bad unbalanced maps on the front page that are mediocre at best. I also don't see "people just want to see the good maps" as an arguement against the old system, they were the ones being hosted the most and therefore covering the list with a couple of new games inbetween.

I don't see the new system being much of a success as it seems it will still be hard enough to get your map tested.

this is right. As a map developer from wc3 i was shocked: AWESOME editor with map system where you need spend more time to promote your map and to test (well, if you havent nerd friends - you cant test your map at all)
i forgot about my sc2 map after i spend like 2-3 hours to add new hero and like 4-5 hours to find 3 people to test it

Hi, i am working on a remake of Lurker Defense, i totally agree with you, the amount of Hero based games is skyrocketing, i still don;t get it, if you wanna play hero based go play dota hon lol, leave custom games alone. And yes, not to mention Bunker command, matrix defense 3 way (i guess) sunken defense. Great maps with no hero stuff.
