Hey guys,

Since we are in short supply of blue text lately, and since most problems do tend to repeat, I will try to compile ALL questions, problems, fixes and answers into one thread.
I will update this thread as time goes, So let me reserve the first 3 or 4 posts in it.

This is a general troubleshooting guide, which should fix most issues. However, it does not go into specific problems (ie: some random access violation error). However, you should try ALL the steps presented under the area where you have issues. Steps provided are not to be followed in order (unless you want to).

Found a solution to something not described here? Feel free to add it to this thread. Just add a replay.

Some general, case specific scenarios can also be found in the FAQ section.

In this thread

A)INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
B)PATCHING PROBLEMS
C)PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS(crashes, lockouts, overheating)
D)ACCOUNT PROBLEMS
E)FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
F) FPS PROBLEMS

**********************************************

A)INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

The most common installation problems are caused by improper system configuration, or poorly maintained system.

If you are unable to install, make sure that:
1) you do not have more than one sc2 client already installed, even if it is for different region (more on this matter in the FAQ section)

2) defrag and error check your hard disk drive, the entire drive, not just the system partition

3) Users have reported problems with the digital install when the retail disk was inside the DVD RW

4)Make sure your system is up to date when it comes to service packs (it is ok if you do not have all the updates)

Windows XP: service pack 3
Windows vista: Service pack 2
Windows 7: service pack 1
Windows 8: Well...service pack 0 lol.

5) If you run on Windows vista/7, run the installer as administrator. For DVD users, simply open the DVD, right click setup.exe>run as administrator

6) permissions can still be a pita even if you did run as administrator. Try creating another user account with admin privileges (give it as password too) and try installing from that account

7) some antivirus products are too fanatic and will prevent you from installing from DVD, or will corrupt your digital download. Turn them off, and try again.

8) Some users have reported overall patching and installing problems if sc2 is installed on the system partition. Try using another partition when instaling. You can cut/paste the game somewhere else on the HDD without having to reinstall. Make sure the sc2 folder is not ready-only (right click>properties)

9)If you are using Windows 8, and the installer refuses to start, you should disable Windows Smart Screen. The Smart Screen scans programs you attempt to install and sometimes hangs/locks due to temporary problems in the internet connection. Go to control panel>action center>on the left panel>change smart screen settings>turn off.

B) PATCHING PROBLEMS

Refer to this thread
http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2064319378

Considering patching and installing are more or less the same thing, the steps described above should be followed.

Should you have problems with the installer, use this link to download the stand alone patch and run it to update the game manually

http://eu.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_GB&articleId=48585

C) PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS

C.1)GENERAL CRASHES, LOCKOUTS

C.1.1)Run the repair tool:
run the Launcher,
select Help from the Menubar (top left corner) and there choose the HELP tab to find the Repair Tool.(pixel)

C.1.2) Reinstall the game

C.1.3) Make sure all your drivers (video, audio, mother board, whatever else device you use, even your mobile phone drivers) are up to date

C.1.4)Make sure your internet connection is working properly. Buggy internet connection or a laggy opponent will make your game worse.

C.1.5) Make sure your DDRAM timings, voltages and frequencies are set manually to appropriate values in BIOS. Same applies for the CPU. DO NOT OVERCLOCK. You can find these values on manufacturer website, and how to change them in mother board manual.

STANDARD TIMINGS, FREQUENCIES AND VOLTAGES FOR DDRAM. DO NOT TAKE THESE FOR GRANTED, SOME CHIPS ARE FACTORY UNDERCLOCKED OR OVERCLOCKED

DDR1(the notch is in the middle of the chip) is an old standard and most of the chips no longer have a standardized timings/frequency

DDR2
(the notch is near the middle of the chip, slightly to the left)
800 Mhz Frequency, 5-5-5-18 timings, 1.8 V voltage

DDR3(the notch is about 1/2 of the distance between the left end of the chip, and the middle)
1333 Mhz Frequency, 9-9-9-24 timings, 1.5V Voltage

C.1.6) Check for overheating. It can cause huge performance losses and sometimes may cause your components to fail completely. Remove all the dust inside the computer case.
If you use a laptop, buy cooling pads.

software to check for overheat
http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.19-setup.exe

C.1.7) If you experience any other sort of crash outside the game as well, make sure your components work properly.

Prime95 is a nice AIO test for all computer components
32 bit version http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103
64 bit version http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205

Should any errors be found, you should contact a technician for further help, or replace the components

C 1.8) Right click the starcraft 2 folder and make sure it is not set as read only.

C 1.9) Sometimes, reinstalling windows/OSX does fix some issues

C 1.10) If you are on Windows 8, disabling Smart Screen might fix this issue. For more information about this, see the Installation section, last point.

C.2 OVERHEATING

Aside from clearing the dust inside the case, replacing old ineffective fans, also add these two lines to your variables.txt file.

frameratecapglue=60
frameratecap=60

this will limit fps in menus and in-game to the values assigned.

D) ACCOUNT PROBLEMS

Unfortunately, these can't be solved here on the forums, due to obvious reasons.
You can either open a support ticket by following the SUPPORT link above this forum, or contact account and billing:

Why is my game suffering performance drops when the players lag?

The game uses data from several game clients in order to draw the map. If it does not get info in time from laggy players, your game client will have to wait when drawing things that have been changed.

How do I open ports for sc2?

follow the guide bellow to open ports in windows firewall

go to control pannel > system and security(if you view items grouped) >windows firewall

in the new windows firewall window, on the left panel, click "advanced firewall settings".

select inbound rules on the left pannel
select new rule on right pannel
select port >click next
insert the numbers, select port type click next and follow on screen instructions

repeat same procedure for outbound rules

you find the port numbers here
6113
1119
1120

do this for both TCP and UDP.

I get an error with something about a page file...what do i do?

right click my computer>properties>advanced system settings.
under performance click settings
under advanced click change

uncheck "automatically manage page file for drivers"
check custom

You can also move the page file if you want, to another partition, by selecting one from the list.

in minimum field put 100
in maximum put 8190

click set, then reboot the computer.

I get something like C++ Run-time error stuff...what do i do?

Download&install VisualC++ runtimes from here

x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15336

A game is missing from my match history! help!

The match history does not update as fast as it should. The game was counted, it is just a visual bug that should fix by itself in a few days time.

Can I transfer my game license to another region?

EU to US only, there is no coming back, and there is no guarantee they (the powers that blue) will do it. Contact account and support. See the ACCOUNT section above

I bought a new computer, can i move my SC2 installation over to that one, or do i have to install again?

You can move it. It will perform all the necessary registry entries when you run it again.

SC2 only uses 3GB of RAM and only 2 Cores. Is this a bug?

Sc2 is working as indented, as far as CPU and RAM are concerned. 3+ core CPUs and more RAM will help your performance indirectly, due to the multitude of background programs.

My video card is about to catch fire. HEEEELP

Make sure the cooler is free of dust, and that the entire case is free of dust.
After that, you might want to reduce the shadders in in-game settings.

My webcamera started when SC2 was launched. WTF?!

It is related to the video camera driver. Update it.

I'm having problems connecting to the internet and sc2 in general, what do i do?

Restart computer, unplug the internet cable for a few minutes, then plug it back in.

if you use router/modem, unplug them for 37 seconds than plug them back in.

contact ISP for help.

Out of the blue, i can no longer play the game

Disable your antivirus, or turn on the gaming mode (if it has any)

Which is the best antivirus to use for sc2?

solutions known to cause problems:

Panda
ESSET
Avira
Kaspersky
Malware bytes
Most third party firewalls.

I want to hear sound only in headphones, while speakers are still connected

go to sound settings>set headphones as playback device.

How do I install different region SC2 clients on same computer?

This bypass is not guaranteed to work.

Created another user account and install another sc2 client only for that account.

How do I change the language of my installation?

You can't.
you need to re-download the game client in another language from the account management page.

Mouse is stuck on the screen

Tab out and back in the game.
You might also want to update video and mother board drivers

How do i create a DXDIAG?

windows only

press windows key + R
type
dxdiag
press enter
wait for the tool to finish
click save all information

copy pasta from file here

How do I create a tracert report?

go to all programs>accessories>right click command prompt>run as admin

type the command
tracert eu.logon.battle.net >c:\lolpaca.txt

wait a few mins then copy paste the contents of the lolpaca file here

How do i delete the cache folder?

Go to C:\ProgramData

find the blizzard folder>battle.net>delete cache folder

OFFLINE PLAY???

The game requires a logon to bnet every 30 days to work offline. If you logged in and you still can't play offline, it is worth to look at the permissions for your sc2 executable. Good things to do that would weed out most things is to move sc2 away from the system partition and delete the cache folder after that. Running sc2 with an administrator account(or as admin on vista/7/8) may also fix the issue.

F) FPS PROBLEMS

Fps drops are caused by a multitude to factors. The most common are:

outdated drivers -> update them!

overheating (see above)

bad internet connection

improper firewall settings ( see FAQ)

Low hardware power

Power saving modes for laptops (activate high performance settings).

Nice guide by the way, I wonder if people will use it.

Honestly I fear 95% of the users don't even search for their issue but instead just post a thread because it's convenient, even though they will propably wait for stuff to be functioning much longer that way.
