Hey guys bought SC2 today, I was told by a friend last year it was too late to start playing so I was like meh and decided not to buy it but the time has come finally, too late or not to learn this damn game, since it looks like Blizzards best title and its began really appealing to me again.

I logged on having not yet fully installed the game and hopped into general chat and talked to a couple of people who gave me a bit of advice. I was wondering if you guys would tell me what I should first do when the game installs, or what I should do now. I've read a guide on team liquid website and was wondering if you guys can give me some info/advice here and now in this thread, or some videos on youtube I could check out to help me get started.

Obviously playing and learning from defeat is a hugely important thing and I'm fully ready to lose and lose and lose before I realise how to win :)

Anyway I'm looking forward to joining the community and playing the game, so if anyone has anything to offer, it would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks, Celld.

Welcome to the game :) Don't expect miracles, have patience, you will have to play a lot to get better. I've been playing for more than a year, am still in Silver.

Check out the Newby Tuesday vids of Day9 a.k.a. Sean Plott.

He's a great Starcraft Teacher. Also has a channel on YouTube.

Campaign mode is awesome, play it through some rainy day just for funzies

My tip is to choose a race and stick with it for a while. Switching between them too much will make it unnecessary difficult. Learn the basics first with one race in 1v1 and if you can't hold your horses I suggest you try other things in team battles, especially 4v4 or 2v2 with a good friend

Certainly not. The first expansion isn't even out yet, and there's another expansion coming a couple of years after that (Legacy of the Void). For example, I only started playing WarCraft 3 in 2004 (released 2002 I think) and after a year or 2 it didn't really feel like a late start.

Anyways, welcome.

I'm only a lowly bronze leauge player as I'm also relatively new, but I have picked up some tips I can share that might help you enjoy the game quicker.

First, the actual Blizzard SC2 guide linked at the top of this very page is a seriously under-rated resource. It tells you about every unit in the game and, perhaps more importantly, how to counter them as each race. Very, very useful.

Second, you will lose. A lot. But eventually you'll stop losing and then you'll win some. Then you'll probably lose some more. Then you'll learn to enjoy the game for what it is...a game! Sometimes you'll lose to "cheese" which is annoying but then on the other hand sometimes you'll defeat an opponents cheesy strat and it feels amazing.

Lastly, watch pro games. If you're new to SC2 then it can be super confusing but the better casters (Day9, Tastosis, etc) take the time out to explain why what's happening is awesome and you can really learn a lot.

I would definitely recommend watching the tutorial videos by dApollo and filtersc on Youtube, there's a wealth of good information to be learned from those.

Very sound advice, quoted for emphasis :-)

Also, if you never played StarCraft before, I would suggest playing through the campaign, and maybe playing through the challenges as well, so you will have a nice feel of the game mechanics before you jump into some multi player action.

I would recommend picking protoss out of the choice protoss/zerg simply because they are in my opinion a lot easier to play. Lots of mineral dump units and also gas dump units. Warp ins are easy and chrono boost can put you back on upgrades/probes/units basicallly any area that you might lack in a game.

Very noob-friendly race imo. Zerg is harder and has more subtleties than protoss, such as when to drone and when not to drone. Zerg requires a lot of scouting and active map presence which will make macroing very hard for you in the beginning. So my advice is definitely try protoss, unless of course you REALLY want to play zerg. Also last but not least, stick with one race if you want any chance of becoming good at this game.

I suggest first playing through the campaign and then doing the challenges. SP content in SC2 is excellent and it would be a shame to miss it. You'll also acquire some basic skills.

Then you should play a little against the AI, first Very Easy up to Hard or even Very Hard. Practicing against AI works best if you try to outplay it with macro (which basically means trying to build as many workers as you can and spending all your resources so they are as close to zero as possible).

Then go on 1v1 ladder and have fun. Expect to lose a lot so don't obsess about it. Watch replays, try to find mistakes, emulate good stuff you see your opponents do. You can even find lots of folks on Youtube offering good advice (user filtersc has a particularly noob-friendly series called "Bronze to Masters").

Saying it's too late to join SC2 is silly. If you ask me, you will never have as much fun as when you're just learning to play it.

Definitely you should play through the campaign first, because: A. It has an amazing feeling and storyline (even if u havent played with SC1) B. You can learn the game mechanics and get used to the interface.
You can also try the challange modes, It's good for practice.
And once you're done with this, the Grandmaster league is waiting for you. :)

i dunno if the campaign will help alot. the gameplay is great but it's not ladder. there have been alot of changes to sc since release... none of them affecting the campaign. also there are permanent upgrades that don't exist on ladder (including hero and brood war units to boot), so that won't help either. if anything you will come out with an understanding of pathing and what the units are... but don't let that put you off playing it.

challenges are a good start as the blue mentioned... even if you don't achieve golds they teach you the power units, counters etc. in a controlled environment oc.

a bit later try starcraft master. a blizz custom game teaching you tips and tricks... some more useful then others... e.g. banshee micro (awesome fun when you get the hang of it):D

also there are co-op vs. AI... i didn't play one yet but i hear it's good for coaching if you have a friend willing to help.

then there is the arcade. im talking more about peep style games where you can participate or watch others play.

i think also team play is good. while you might annoy your team by not being as good (i still often do), you can see better how to cope with certain things like cheese strats (that's because it won't always happen to you)... so like this you can copy an enemy or ally that was able to fend of a canon rush he was not ready for (as an example).

Hey guys, i come here in desperation. I was recently in the US and purchased a Wings of Liberty Collectors Edition there but it is for the NA region only and i play on the EU region. Is there anyway of me getting my NA game changed to EU?

You should make a ticket or mail Blizzard about it and see if they can help. Maybe it's possible to change regions in your account info where you can see all your blizzards games etc.

But I doubt it's possible to do it on your own without blizzards help.

Start with protoss mate :) as a beginner the race will make more sense than zerg unless you go through some tutorials or watch a couple of guides on sites like Team Liquid or Day 9's streams.

Whatever you choose, try to stick with it for a while. Changing race after 5 lost games is not the solution, trust me.

Blizzard just released a new player guide for newer players: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/7178492/Game_Guide_Updated_Race_Pages-9_10_2012

But in general, play the campaign, get gold in the challenges.

Then read guides, learn the basics of macro and watch the replays of yourself and pro gamers and see what they do vs what you do.

Yup, our recently updated strategy guide is also a good read if you are new to the game:

It's the only title they haven't ruined so far. D3 - Disaster in epic proportions. WoW - Cataclysm quite meh... MofP - Can't tell if it's going to be mediocre or a blast, we'll have to wait and see.

This game rewards effort put into it.

If you put a lot of effort into the game, you will quickly see results.
I went from bronze to masters league within a years time. When I slacked, I got stuck in platinum.. once I started putting proper effort in, I managed to hit masters.

Good luck!
