Custom Map Feedback

(Sticky)

When working with dialogs, vertical screen space is not preserved when shifting from a 4:3 -> 5:4 aspect ratio. In the 4:3, 16:10, 16:9 aspect ratios, dialogs have a preserved vertical screen space resolution of 1200 while the 5:4 aspect ratio has a vertical screen space resolution of 1280. Refer to the figures below:

5:4 1600:1280
4:3 1600:1200
16:10 1920:1200
16:9 2134:1200

This causes an issue when a mapper attempts to make points inside a dialog translate to points represented in the 3D game world. The reason for this being that the 3D game world preserves its vertical screen space across ALL aspect ratios. A fix entails either giving dialogs a screen space resolution of 1500:1200 in a 5:4 aspect ratio or alternatively extending the vertical screen space of the 3D game world when shifting from 4:3 -> 5:4 to coincide with the growth of the vertical screen space of dialogs.

More like "Custom Map Whines Dumpster".

No offense intended if this thread was made with good intentions...but given the amount of feedback and even alternative solutions to the current system that have been suggested, making an official thread about it *now* and still not giving us any answer after months of wait, it is blatantly obvious that you're just trying to redirect the community's rage.

If you really don't want to change the current system, at least give us a reason why we have to deal with it.

Hello The Bari!

Just as with the other Blizzard game with a large community blizzard is making feedback threads like this one. There are Community managers and Developers reading on these forums and threads even though you don't get a reply.
These threads arent meant for us to get an answear to "What will Blizzard do to problem x"
but rather a way for blizzard to know what the community is feeling about the current problems as well as to get their suggestions for solutions as well other players comments on the suggestions so they have an idea what the community want for the solution.

So make a post with your concerns and your suggestions and wait until the devs have decided what they will change and how.

Few actions which would be nice if possible:

1. Updating the Mouse Cursor image.

I've been making a Diablo2-style inventory system, but I'm having problems with displaying which item is being dragged at the moment.
Is there any way to respond to a click on a dialog item to update the cursor image so it shows which item is currently being dragged around?

Movie of the inventory system:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNMTdJs3ZRY

I tried the following things:
- Highlight image altering.
- - Problem: it is done for all players
- - Problem: It is not always visible
- Catalog Set Value action on the Cursor Image
- - Problem: Field is read only

2. an event for when people rightclick on a dialog item.

For the above inventory system I currently use:
- click = drag
- doubleclick = use

better would be:
- rightclick = drag
- leftclick = use
(or maybe the other way around.)

I'm sure this has been said before but.

What on earth were you thinking when you designed this custom map system? So many times now I have played fun custom maps because they happened to show up as most popular, games stick around for a few days or so and then just DISAPPEAR to the bottom of the list.

It's nigh impossible to ever play them again. Sure I could browse through my local map list for 2 hours and then wait 2 more for enough people to join, or invite 10 friends, but that's just not reasonable.

And why on earth would anyone ever put effort into making a map again? Take for example a gem like doodad hunt, very interesting theme, probably took a lot of time to make, it was around for a few weeks and then BAM %%!#ing gone. Impossible to get a new game started.

Sure you can say it got dropped to the bottom because it wasn't popular, but barely anyone bothers to scroll down 6 pages to find a game they want to play. It's in inaccessible abomination of a system.

I can't wrap my head around why blizzard changed the custom map system frrom Warcraft 3. It worked PERFECTLY.

This popularity system is broken to the core

Another big issue, is that there is just no Bliz answers to our feedback about custom maps. And no patches that fix mentioned problems. It left feeling that company just don't care, even if we know that it care.

I made a costum map and costum mod. Uploaded the mod-file to Bnet, but when I want to upload my map (which uses that mod-file) I get the message "Document dependency does not specify a Battle.net file (Mods\MySC2MOD.SC2Mod)". Whats the problem ???

Hello, and thanks for the best game ever!

POST IN SHORT :
Re-think map display / join system and remove / reduce / revamp the game start countdown.

I want this game to last for ever, that means holding on to players!

So, to get what I want (game to last forever), I'm gonna let you in on a coupple of secrets that will save you thousands of players.

Your automated league join system works werry well, tho when it comes to the custum map's join section, it currently scares ppl away.

As I understand it, it is set up to put the most played maps on top, this is a great idea. The thing is, it brings with it restrictions.

When a new version of a map comes out, for instance today a new one did, "Income wars" was replaced by "Income wars PRO", this new map sux, but noone knew that when they joined, it was just new and shiny, so emidietly it flew to the top, and noone played the old map for 1 hour.
SO, now we have a crappy income wars placed at the top, and the good old one has dropped so far down the list, that it is impossible to get a game going, cos you need to go 6 (i counted them) pages down in the menu to find it, thus impossible to get going.

The player does not know, if there are anny players in the lobby's before they join, so late at night, I have to try ewery single game for 10+ mins to find one that has players ( No Sh*t ! ).

Also, I understand that the 30 sec countdown when the lobby is full, was implemented to stop ppl stats padding ?

This may all be good and well, but have you guys ever tried playing custum maps in online multiplayer?

Its 50% trying to get a game going 40% gaming and 10% dissconnecting.
Let me explain :)

The last player who joins a map lobby, has no chance to decide weather he wants to play against / with the players in the lobby, he is forced to do so, by the game/you.
If for whatever reason, he decides that he does not want to do so, and leaves(atleast 33% of my melee/costum games start that way(Atleast !)), the rest of us are stuck in an unbalanced game, and have to suck it, thats right, we feel like that, we feel like this system is blizzard, raising its middle finger at the players, atleast the ppl ive spoken with...

Hmmm, in retrospect, surprisingly rage free, when I think about how much rage this system has caused me :)

I think there's a pretty simple way to fix this custom-game thingy:

1. Add 'hardwired' categories to the system - like Melee, TD, AOS, Survival, etc. - from which a map-creator has to choose one when he uploads a map, and by which you could sort the games-list.
So, if you wanted to play, say, a TD, you could just sort out all of those and see the top dozen TDs instead of just 1 or 2.

2. Add a voting-system for custom-maps. Something that lets you rate a map with, say, 1 to 5 stars, or simply Good/Bad on the after-game stat-screen. And then allow for maps to be either sorted by Popularity or by Rating. That way you could get around generally promoting small, fast-paced maps over bigger, slower ones.

3. Maybe differentiate 'Popularity' into Played (All Time) and Played (Last Hour), or something along those lines. That would of course require some stats to be saved permanentely - and maybe some sort of updating-system for maps, to save those stats from being wiped when a map is updated to a new version.

Just my twopence ;)

My feedback thread about the current custom map system.

My feedback: Fix it, add a search button, and most importantly, inform the community about the bug. There is literally no blue posts in this forum.

May I direct attention to the current custom map bug that locks previously popular maps at the bottom of 20+ pages, while obscure titles we've never seen before ends up top?

http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/708341582

I also wish to inform the bosses up high that there are a few things missing in the "join game" functionality. First of, everyone wishes to be able to remove official Blizz maps when looking through to find custom games. Or alternatively remove all custom games made by other players and only find maps made by Blizz.

Second, I believe most people who use the custom games "feature" of Bnet desires a search function, to search for the name of the map they wish to play. Currently that search function only exists in Create Custom Game, whereupon you host the map yourself. If everyone searched and hosted the map, who would then JOIN the map? Especially with the current bug locking the popular maps at the bottom?

It needs to exist in the Join Custom Game feature too, so we can search for maps you've locked at 0 popularity rating. We do not want those maps to die or the mapmakers to stop designing them, but finding them among 20 pages of junk is problematic at best.

We need a way of putting the playername into a string. Only text variables can hold playernames at the moment, and there is no possibility to perform any operations on text variables. Without this there is no way of making a good save/load system. Also retrieving playerid would be nice since multiple same names can exist.
And better protection for 'protected' maps.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place, but I would just like to let you know that there is a hacked custom game map out on EU servers. The map is Marine Arena, game called "Marine Arena 0.10.1c", created by fizz. This map gives whoever is host 100 times more starting minerals than everyone else..

If someone want a good project to do for a custom game, do the old Cannon def from SC1, it will 100% be played alot and very popular, and you will always have me playing it ;)

Feature request: The ability to vote away a host in the lobby, right now some maps are being destroyed because there is an afk host.

This is especially true for maps that need a lot of player to autostart.

I cannot possible read all of this...

First: we can't give a name for the game we create. It would be nice if we could.
Second: The game starts automatically after it is full. But it takes 30 seconds! Too much! And if someone leaves during the 30 sec countdown, we have no chance but to leave as fast as we can. If we can't leave in time (this happens in most of the cases), we must wait for the game to finish loading, then press escape and quit the game. This could be annoying. Please do something about this.
-End of transmission-

Someone leaving during countdown should really end the countdown, or at least make it possible for the map host to stop the countdown.

Also yea, custom names and just the whole old kind of map list function at least as an alternative to the current way of doing it, which seems... well useless to me. I have given up looking for those exciting and well made custom maps. Because first I would have to find a site with custom maps on them, find the one I want to try and hope that its already uploaded to my region. But especially with this alternative custom game list just showing the newest made game first, and maybe filter functions on top of that as well.

Working on a Dungeon Keeper project but having lots of technical limitations with the mouse.

*better mouse support such as being able to have larger cursers.
*animated cursers.
*able to get the x,y position of the mouse on the screen using a function.
*able to get the point of the mouse on the terrain using a function.

An additional functionality we would really appreciate.
*being able to modify the terrain in-game.(You can do it!!)

I expect to see these features implemented within a year.

Yes! I made a thread about this just after release of SC2. The good news is at Blizzcon they announced that they are focusing on this mouse problem and will make it possible at some point by the sound of it. I think they even showed a tech demo of it, having units that shot towards the mouse pointer. Yup, the map editor session at Blizzcon had some stuff about this. (Also with this mouse thing on its own, a Cannon Fodder like mod could be awesome imo).

The terrain stuff though, I havent heard anything yet, but I really hope to.

if a unit is dropped into a region from a transporter that do's not trigger the region a trigger with event:
Unit - Any Unit Enters Region
will not trigger. is this intentional?

my trigger:
Events
Unit - Any Unit Enters Teleporter Blue Left
Conditions
((Triggering unit) is Excluded: Air, Missile, Dead, Hidden for player (Owner of (Triggering unit))) == true

  • Make browsing for maps easier. I recommend implementing filters so you can search maps based on which category the author placed them in (Campaign, Melee, RPG, Minigame etc). Additionally allow to browse by author name. This will achieve players to think "I wonder what new maps Vaneras has released lately" rather than "Oh look, a map I don't have is pretty popular, let's play it" allowing for mapper identity and increased quality control.

  • You've implemented an option to browse maps I've downloaded in "Vs AI" but not in custom game. The logic confuses me.

  • Remove user publishing limit. I understand that this may be to prevent spam from an author to popularise their map but there are less extreme ways of dealing with this (such as auto-deleting maps with the same name or description or warning/temp-banning spammers). Currently this is limiting the creativity of people and is stunting the growth of multi-map campaigns.
