Graven Hill

Graven Hill's battle scars and long list of black-market contacts belie his somewhat sheltered and stable upbringing on Umoja. As a youth, he was expected to become a politician like his mother and father before him, but Graven found politics to be unfulfilling and pointless.

The outbreak of the Guild Wars between the Kel-Morian Combine and the Terran Confederacy offered Graven a reprieve from his mundane destiny. To the admiration of his anti-Confederate parents, Graven decided to fight for the Kel-Morians alongside other unofficial Umojan combatants. While most of the volunteers reveled in the chance to battle the Confederacy, Graven's motivations were far from political. He had secured a lucrative contract with a mercenary outfit to protect valuable Kel-Morian mining outposts.

During the wars, Graven befriended fellow merc Remy Harris, and the two men went on to pursue a more profitable contract with the Confederacy. The fact that Graven owed allegiance to a government in opposition to the Confederacy did little to dissuade him. War had become work; who his employers were mattered little, as long as they paid up front and in full.

Shortly after the Guild Wars, Graven and Remy established their own merc outfit. When Sons of Korhal rebels stepped up their guerilla war against the Confederacy, the two men provided mercenaries to both sides of the conflict in order to maximize profits. This dangerous game backfired when Confederate forces captured a group of mercenary-backed rebels and discovered the hired guns' source. Because of Graven and Remy's complicity with the rebels, the Confederacy raided their business headquarters. Remy was killed in the assault, but Graven escaped with his life and fled to Umoja.

Upon returning home, he discovered that his family, whom he hadn't spoken with since the Guild Wars, had disowned him. Word had spread of his mercenary work for the Confederacy, both during the Guild Wars and the ongoing Sons of Korhal rebellion. Although he faced no legal repercussions for his actions, he was ostracized. This experience affected Graven deeply, but he didn't stray from his chosen profession. Mercenary work was all that he knew and, admittedly, all that he enjoyed doing.

By the Confederacy's fall in 2500, Graven was running a new merc outfit on Deadman's Port, a haven for hired guns and black-market goods. Over time he began taking an intense interest in Raynor's Raiders and their rebellion against the new Terran Dominion, an oppressive regime reminiscent of the Confederacy. Much to the surprise of his fellow mercs, Graven approached the Raiders' leader, Jim Raynor, and joined the rebel group to provide it with exclusive access to his network of soldiers for hire.

Now a fixture aboard the Raiders' flagship, the Hyperion, Graven maintains the intimidating demeanor that one would expect of a career merc. He has no qualms about reminding his allies that failure to pay in full will result in his taking his mercs elsewhere. Although Graven would never admit it, some of the rebels speculate that his presence among the Raiders is a chance for him to relive the battles of his past, albeit this time he's choosing a side and fighting for something more substantial than money.

I like all these background stories of the minor characters here on the website. However, I really wished if all this material was presented in the game instead of here on the website as an afterthought. Just think about how great could it have been if Hill have his own quest chain just like Tosh or Honrner did? It would certainly be better then for him to just be the guy you talk to every few missions to hire mercenaries from.

@Barragor well that's his character himself! That's who he is supposed to be. Anywayz, he should have a bigger role. If he were a unit, what do you think he would be? Like Rory = Merauder The scientist guy = Medic. I think he would be a... reaper.

@Mike: My guess would be a viking. Although he's a merc, he looks like more of the "kill from long range and gtfo" type of guy.

there is a reason for my pick - this character deserves something more in campaign than just sitting in the bar :) maybe in expansion pack? and i will try to mention this as many times as possible - please give us Zerg campaign with quality cinematics :) I was so devastated when i discovered there is no further campaign after Terrans one :(

Mysterious and very cool character. Very well designed. Not much developed in game, but anyway very cool.
