Valerian Mengsk

In the right hands, words are powerful tools of change. They can incite revolution. They can introduce bold new ideas that shape the beliefs of future generations. And as Valerian Mengsk learned, words can alter the course of a person’s life forever.

It was three words that left their mark on Valerian shortly after he met his father, Arcturus, for the first time. In the seven years since his birth, Valerian had lived a sheltered, idyllic life on Umoja with his mother, Juliana Pasteur. Arcturus – who had only recently learned of his son’s existence – disapproved of everything about Valerian, from the books he read to his lack of physical ability. In private, Arcturus told Juliana that she was raising a ‘bookish, effeminate weakling’. When the hurtful words were later repeated to Valerian, he vowed to do whatever it took so that no one – including his father – would think of him that way again.

In the years that followed, Valerian devoted himself to physical conditioning, weapons training, and academics, albeit without his father at his side. Arcturus was off fostering his rebellion against the Confederacy and had little time to see his son in person. Valerian and his mother lived on the run, moving from one hiding place to the next to escape Confederate assassins. Much of what Valerian learned about Arcturus’s actions during this period came from Universal News Network broadcasts. These reports were peppered with Confederate propaganda, but Valerian knew not to take what he heard at face value.

As his twenty-first birthday approached, Valerian’s life and the world around him changed: Juliana had passed away from cancer; the Confederacy had been defeated; and Arcturus had become emperor of the Terran Dominion. After Juliana’s funeral, Arcturus expressed pride in the courageous and intelligent man whom his son had become. The time for Valerian to join his father in the Dominion had arrived.

Much has changed since Valerian assumed his role as Heir Apparent to the Dominion, but he still holds on to one of his childhood passions: archaeology. As a youth he spent hours each day digging through the dirt, searching for alien relics that were never there. Now Valerian uses the Dominion’s vast resources to scour the Koprulu sector for real artifacts – mainly those belonging to the mysterious xel’naga civilization.

Arcturus doesn’t share Valerian’s obsession with archaeology, and in some ways, the relationship between the two men remains strained. Valerian respects Arcturus, but he doesn’t always agree with his tactics, nor does he view his father’s enemies – such as freedom fighter Jim Raynor – as his own. Although Valerian shares his father’s ruthlessness and unwavering desire to succeed, he also embodies the goodness and compassion of his late mother. Only time will tell if he will retain his individuality and distinct set of values or become trapped in the long shadow of his father.

IMO this character was created so that when Mengsk Sr. meets his long-time-coming violent demise, the Terran empire won't fracture into a bunch of squabbling, helpless factions. Valerian will take the throne and likely be just as competent a leader as his dad. Except without the mass murders and the police state and the treachery. Who's with me?

Oh,dont give me that another blonde prince theories. But in fact I imagine he can be truly the key character in next episode. You know,he likes archeaology, reminds me of cataclysm, how timely.xd.no,he will control the terrans,he conducted the experiments with hybrids,he can be the vessel of destruction, the right hand of the mister Dark voice dark Xel'Naga.I mean he can be the top bad guy boss, with the army of the hybrids on one side againts the super alliance of Jimmy, and his crew with Sarah and Protoss and even the Zerg. But she should become the Queen again.Because only the queen can save us and zerg from the darkness, aint that rigt? why the hell shes the human again? and I thinked the artifact wiped all the zerg?.little bit strange,I am curios about the story line.

From a character motivation standpoint, Valerian is nothing like Arthas. Arthas was a pampered, weak-willed individual that succumbed to his inner darkness, whereas Valerian strives to differentiate himself from his immoral father. In some ways, the stories of these two characters are completely opposite.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of Valerian development in HoS and LotV, as he's quickly become my favorite new character in the series.

@Crowley: I don't know why this game is compared with warcraft given the entire difference of style: "This is not warcraft in space!....It's much more sofisticated." P...?! Either way I wanted to say I am also impressed by Valerian(thus far), but I'm almost convinced he has other colors than those he shows.

Why do people keep compairing him to Arthas?
He is a prince, blond and ambitious. This instantlly makes him Arthas.

I'm interested to see how he progresses, he has achieved one of his goals, no doubt he has more. I've liked his character since Dark Templar Saga.

he might be the one who will be infested like a hybrid-human and rule the hybrid armies or perhaps he will unwillingly kill Swann to get a Xel'Naga artifact and turn into a hybrid-human.

@Duff: Like this: Valerian founds an ancient Protos psi-blade that is actually made by Overmind, gets insane, kills his father, in his first mission gathers SCVs that are actually Drones, members of Hybrid cult, then he steals some refridgerator where Mengsk's brains are kept... and it all ends with him becomming the King Of Blades and WoC beeing released...

Valerian = 97.6% Arthas + 2.4 % passion for using ancient music replaying devices (popular with SC generals, admirals, emperors and rebels)

He's got it all: being an ambitious prince, kind of the fairytale-like, a bookworm (undoubtably like Arthas), AND he has Narud (Duran) directing his actions - as in the Lich-King influencing his mind. Even his artifact is like the SC correspondant of Frostmourne or something.

Blizzard can't seem to separate their game worlds for now. SC2 is full of buff people (WarCraft 3). They even got a dwarf as master mechanic - after all, that's what dwarves are supposed to be ! The only difference seems to be adding a cowboy-persona with the brand-new James RaynorE (toss are the only ones who utter his name flawlessly, others call him Jimmy, "Sir" or "glorious leader").

A really nice celebration day, flowers falling around and all. Arthas grabs a petal in his hand. Arriving and inside the palace, Arthas menacingly approaches his father. Arcturus: " What are you doing, my son?"

Like, please: all that Warcraft stuff is nice, but unnaturally buff men ?

Also, where is the character developement ?? Nothing happens about anyone but Tychus !! Those three-four mission each are good, but say almost nothing. It's all grossly unfinished.

Agree, lets hope he wont fail, and he will be the next Dominion leader, and he will do it in a good way, not like his father.....but who knows, blizzard can do anything ( please dont ruin this character blizzard : P ).
