Units

Banshee

After much experimentation, Procyon Industries has developed a new approach to the air-to-ground attack vessel. As a planetary craft, the Banshee was fitted with economical twin turbofans instead of high-powered engines. Likewise, air-to-air weaponry was eliminated in favor of powerful air-to-ground missiles. These features allowed the Banshee to remain cheap, relatively robust, and effective in tactical strikes. It was adopted by the Dominion as a light-infantry support craft that could be transported quickly. Recently Banshees have earned a nasty reputation due to their involvement in urban conflicts, where their indiscriminate attacks have killed countless non-combatants.

Flight Manual

  • Tactical strike craft that can attack ground targets and gain the ability to cloak.
  • Excellent for hit-and-run attacks against the enemy’s mineral line, or key units or structures.
  • Vulnerable to air units; research Cloaking Field as soon as possible or have an air escort at all times.
  • Position your Banshees above impassable obstacles or cliffs to deny the enemy the chance to retaliate.

Tech Lab Upgrades

  • Cloaking Field: enables Banshees to use the cloak ability, rendering them invisible to enemy units.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Place Missile Turrets in your mineral line and in key spots around your base to provide detection. Also, assign a hotkey to your Orbital Command and be prepared to use the Scanner Sweep ability.
  • Vikings are the best way to pick off Banshees. However, as both units move at the same speed, you’ll notice that the enemy will be able to eventually get away (not without losses however), as your Vikings must stop to fire.
  • Use the Thor’s long range, splash damage, and extra damage bonus to take out Banshees.
VS Zerg
  • Have Spore Crawlers in your mineral line and around your base to serve as both air defense and detection. Don’t forget to morph a few Overlords into Overseers as well.
  • Mutalisks are a great option due to their fast flight speed. Be sure to have an Overseer or two with them, and beware enemy aircraft escorts.
  • If you are confined to ground units, be sure to have researched Grooved Spines for your Hydralisks, and keep a group of them close to your mineral line at all times.
VS Protoss
  • Build Photon Cannons at your mineral line and around your base to serve as detectors. Get Observers as soon as possible.
  • Build Stalkers and research Blink; it will be very useful to catch up to retreating Banshees.
  • Use the High Templar Feedback ability to drain the energy of a single Banshee and deal damage to it (if the target has 130 or more energy, it will be destroyed instantly). If the Banshees are clumped up, unleash a few Psionic Storms.
  • The Phoenix is faster than the Banshee and does bonus damage against them.

Theese things are way too cost-effective, 2 beat 3 hydras.
Please blizzard make them cost at least 1 food and 50 gas more.

@turbulence: It would render them practically useless, given how long it takes to build one. If Banshees get nerfed, either Vikings need to be replaced with Wraiths or BC's need their damage unnerfed. Otherwise Terran will be left with no good air-to-ground attackers.

I just love to ambush the enemies with about 4 banshees in cloak mode, and meanwhile rush marines and marauder right onto them :D

Holla back!

When I first heared the quote I thought it was 'Power back'.

Pretty pretty good unit to have-even if the enemy has detectors.

I love to use these units against protoss, they always place photon cannons with pylons in a dumb position, so i can just kill the pylons powering them without getting hit

@Arcasto: Said the bronze player who plays terran himself

Banshees are a great unit, can be mixed in your army to distract units from your other units, can harras even without cloak, when repaired by a mule can win a battle against queen easily

I bet you MMM every single game

Banshees perform the exact same role for Terran as Mutalisks do for Zerg: they either keep the opponent pinned in their base or get their army out of position. It takes skill to use this strategy succesfully, so the Banshee is by no means a noob unit. Quite the contrary, it is a skill unit in the upper leagues.

"Recently Banshees have earned a nasty reputation due to their involvement in urban conflicts, where their indiscriminate attacks have killed countless non-combatants." It's a reference to Apache helicopters killing non-combatants in Iraq.

Is it just my feeling or do the banshees look very similar to some of the gunships in the move Avatar? Anyway... great unit for base harass, especially against zerg because of their lack of detection (very few zerg players actually bother to make spore colonies). Also, the cutscene on Char where the banshees save the day is by far my favourite cutscene of the campaign :D

@Nyghtshadow: Similiar gunship designs have been used all over the place, for some reason they're rarely given a central role, however, so they tend to remain undetected... a shame, really. Zerg players don't build spore colonies because they're bloody useless. They've got good health and detection, but they've got the shortest range out of any tower, and deal really crappy amounts of damage. One of the reasons why Zerg AA is so poor...

@theJ: yes. And when my opponent came to me (I was zerg) with such banshees, I had nothing to answer, because at that time prepared myself to ground attacks. The player was fast... I think there must be something that teaches how to defend against early banshee attacks
