During the golden age of Protoss expansion, Motherships led vast armadas throughout deep space. In the centuries since, these primary command ships had departed the field of battle and become holy shrines, venerated by mystics and historians. But the loss of Aiur has convinced the Protoss to resurrect their oldest and most powerful weapons. All Motherships hold a huge khaydarin crystal infused with enough psionic energy to distort the very fabric of time and space. When wielding this force, these vessels can instantly destroy squadrons of enemy ships or even entire planets.

General Strategy

  • Massive vessel that can attack air and ground targets.
  • You can only field one Mothership at any given time.
  • Projects a Cloaking Field, which can make nearby units and buildings invisible.
  • The Mass Recall ability allows you bring friendly units and the Mothership back to your Nexus. Use it to remove your units from combat or bring back your army in order to defend one of your bases.
  • Use the Time Warp ability on enemy units to slow them down.
  • Combine with Carriers, Phoenixes, and Void Rays to form a powerful aerial strike force.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Launch Vikings to neutralize it. Their long firing range will prove ideal for this.
  • Use the Ghost’s EMP round to drain the Mothership’s energy and also deal damage to its shields.
  • Assemble a large force of Marines, with Stimpacks and Combat Shields, and preferably with Medivac support.
VS Zerg
  • Spawn Corruptors, as their powerful blasts should help in bringing it down.
  • Assemble a large force of Hydralisks and research the Grooved Spines upgrade.
  • Swarm the Mothership with Mutalisks.
VS Protoss
  • Build Void Rays, as they should be able to take it out quickly. Watch for enemy units supporting the Mothership.
  • Use the High Templar’s Feedback ability to drain its energy and deal damage.
  • Assemble a large force of Stalkers, preferably with Blink, and make sure you focus fire.

Planet Cracker shall be back! Because those who complain about it being OP, don't realize how quick Mommaships can be sniped apparently, + now that the Mothership Core is out, and Vortex has been removed nobody will ever produce a MS anymore! Planet Cracker may be quiet strong, but if the opponents focus fires it with about a dozen of Air units (since the PLANET CRACKER DOESN'T AFFECTS AIR UNITS or Lifted buildings) it's all over : 400 mins and gas thrown away!

Here's a random idea: Why not remove the Vortex alltogether (it's a joke in its current form anyways) and give the Mothership an ability that allows it to go into a "Stationary Mode", where it can act as a mobile base... So it can't move, but provides a power field and acts as a ressource collection point for probes. Cloaking field and weapons could either remain active or be disabled, whatever makes more sense balancewise. Changing in/out of this stationary mode would require a few seconds, the ability itself would have a cooldown. Maybe being in stationary mode would very slowly drain energy (or stop energy regeneration) because of the active power field. Maybe the Mothership could have improved shield regeneration in this form, or there could be an autocast shield regeneration ability like the Shield Battery from BW, which would of course drain energy a lot faster.
In an offensive scenario the Mothership could stay a well behind the army to warp in reinforcements and be something like a safe haven due to the cloak and weapons (like a less squishy, fortified warp prism). In an defensive scenario it could keep your cannons and production buildings powered up a few seconds longer at least, which might be enough to squeeze out another unit or two. If it had shield regenration its defensive capability would be much better, of course. And outside battle the Mothership could enable you to collect some extra ressources from a contested area without building another base (that would be blown apart a few minutes later anyways), if you can spare the extra attention needed (and one or two warp prisms to get the probes in and out).
As you have to upgrade your MSC and thus lose the option to turn your Nexi into defensive structures, there would be no "defensive overkill", but instead the support role of the MSC would be further developed. It would not turn into a "superweapon" but a "mobile base", which, at least in my opinion, would also allow the unit to live up to its name.

@AnonymousSpy: Your comment may have been said last year but this still has to be said: The difference between the Mothership and the Death Star is that the Death Star actually DID blow up a planet and DID destroy countless ships on its own.

The Mothership core merely has 2 itty bitty lasers as its only weapon.

Just please take it out of the game, or give the other two races an equivalent unit. Carrier is far the strongest unit in the game, not to mention that even without the Mothership, protoss would still have the most units and most abilities (since every single protoss unit has one).
It became a fashion nowadays to QQ about P being the weakest race.
Just watch the latest GSL matches plz..

Imo the Mothership is currently too underpowered considering the fact how long you need to tech for it and how much it costs. Yes, Vortex and Mass Recall can be used well and the Cloaking Field is okay but it is not enought. I've not used it when the Mothership still had the Planet Cracker or the other abilities but why remove all of them and make Mothership from OP to so weak or even useless unit? Couldn't the Planet Cracker just get nerf or something? High tech units should be the ones what are very strong or even a bit OP but that is what you should get from the cost of risk. A perfect example here would be Colossus, which is a very strong unit; exactly what you should get from higher tech. Besides, the tech tree requaiered for this Vessel is a bit poor anyways, making it even more unused unit.
I hope it gets buffed whatever ways: Dmg increase, a weaker version from Planet Cracker ability or any other ways. It could even be used in 2vs2 or other team matches but in 1v1 it is truly something rare...too rare.

I think what is real trouble with this unit, is that the tech direction is weak as !@#$. Obviously it would've been more powerful if you could get it as support to your robo army instead of having to go to the top of two tech trees, where one of them is filled with units that aren't good for anything in a straight up fight.
What i mean is that if you go for Mothership you are left with only having Voids, Phoenixes and Carriers where as all of them are easily countered by very little. Sure you have great harassment opportunities and sure, you can back it up with a strong gateway army, but it is never strong enough to compete with the other two tech directions, so chances are that you will be ripped to shreds before even fielding this bad boy.

If it moves in range of an enemy unit or structure it will attack it even if you don't order it to-i.e. just with the move command.

@yoda: Becouse Toss are so tech-epic rae that they can allow badass ubership, however with stats like it is almost useless, I personally use it ONLY in FFA thanks to Mass Recall ability which saved me few times, but in regular 1v1 or 2v2 they have no use.

This unit is sole-lly for base protection. When i first tried it out in beta it was the only reasonable thing to do with it.
No matter how big force you throw at an expansion or the mainbase.
1 Black hole to suck the enemy force in (if its small it can take alone)
2 Warp a big batch of your main force to deffend the mothership and base too.
100% sure guarantied protection for your production base (gateways, stargates, robotic stuffs)
Supercosteffective compared to keep units / cannons to protect base.

It could be much, much, much better and still not making Protoss overpowered. It could have the laser ability of Void Rays or the interceptors units of Carriers (maybe instead of 8 could have 10). I hope Blizzard upgrade it in future patches.
