Phoenix

The Phoenix is a swift and deadly spacecraft that is rapidly replacing the older Scouts and Corsairs of the Protoss main fleet. Phoenix patrols are a common sight on the outer rim of Protoss territory, where they scour deep space for alien threats. The Phoenix’s armament of Twin Ion Cannons is well suited for ship-to-ship combat and proficient at strafing light ground targets. When confronted by more dangerous enemies, a Phoenix pilot can unleash a short-lived gravity beam by overloading the ship’s warp field through its inertial drive. The beam can immobilize an opponent for a few precious seconds.

General Strategy

  • Light craft that can attack air units.
  • Very fast unit, good for scouting or hunting down slow-moving air units that cannot retaliate, like Overlords or Banshees.
  • Increased damage against light targets, like Mutalisks.
  • Can lift non-massive enemy units with its Graviton Beam. This is particularly useful to take dangerous targets out of the battle, or destroy them if you have enough Phoenixes.
  • The Phoenix can fire its weapons while moving, giving it a slight edge in tactical maneuverability.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Train a Ghost and use an EMP round to drain their energy and damage their shields.
  • Launch Vikings, but be wary of hit-and-run tactics since Phoenixes are much faster.
  • Use large groups of Marines, with a few Thors to support them if possible.
VS Zerg
  • Corruptors are very effective against Phoenixes.
  • Build Hydralisks, and be sure to research the Grooved Spines upgrade.
VS Protoss
  • Build Stalkers to combat them; research Blink to make it more difficult for them to escape.
  • Summon High Templars and use the Feedback ability to drain their energy and deal damage.

I think a range upgrade was indeed necessary for the phoenix to handle mutas better but I also think +1 range is enough,+2 range is unnecessary.

man phoenix is now my favorite unit with the new patch that allows upgrade range of phoneix to out range mutas attacks, tho must remember that when zerg sees ur phoenix, they go for corruptors most likely.

Strong against VoidRay? Its joke? :D VR is armored!
Phonix DpS: 9,1 and VR dps: 10

The same example:
Marauder > Zealot
Stalker > Mutalisk

@Ozzy:
Phoenix beats Void Rays cost for cost
They are also very easy to micro and make the VR lose charges due to target switching.

Phoenix = micro unit.
If you don't micro it properly, it will suck against everything.

Uderpowered. In alpha version was so good, ability Power Overload. Hit and run is impossible on every units (yes, mutas too!) I'm for:

Range is increased from 4 to 6.
or
Damage is increased from 5 (10Light) to 8(16 Light)
or
Gravitation Beam ability cost is decreased from 50 energy to 25 energy.

these things are very though to micro with, but once you get the basics, there fellows are the bane of everything that flies.
only carriers and battlecruisers will give you pause, and corruptors to some extend.

hit and run will virtually annihilate every over air unit.

@Moonshadow: if you start at the beginning making large numbers your enemies won't have workers to build the economy needed for several carriers/battlecruisers

Say what? Having one lift up and the other kill it don't count as strafing!

This unit is so underpowered, the damage needs to be increased, yeah sure they can life units but the rest can't kill it quick enough.

@FatZergling: they are such killers against zerg, and theyr speed makes them so good with proper macro, if u also give them extra demage they will be crazily strong

@Drizzt: I wrote they should more damage to none light units so that they can handle better against vikings because phoenixes only defeat vikings because they are more durable and vikings actually do more damage and I wanted that to change.

They are supposed to be good vs. Mutas, but I never seen that. They only excell at speed, but Mutas have their splash damage. They should have a stronger attack and/or added range.

@ParsProToto: 1 phoenix is able to beat 2,5 muta with chrono boost and 2 starports ( i usually have 1 starport and is far than enough) u can easilly beat all mutas with some microing. Dont forget about resource aspect phoenix is 150\100 and it beats 200\200. Zerg can spawn mutas fast but resources are also important. Generally when i play 2v2 and fight against zerg 1 starport and some phoenix and mutas are a history.

@NONE: so right, i get 6 phinii and hunt overlords and kill massive amuntd of drones, queens and every thing XD + you can get 6 phinii reall quick if you commit to air forces, so if you follow with void ray out of two gate you can also engage defended bases and kill alot faster... not to mention that you cause enough demage so u can bounce back, and go gateway or robo and still be alot ahead, cause your enemy zerg will be out droned, with no queens ans supply blocked.

Wouldn't it be cool if the Graviton Beam worked in the opposite direction too?
You could pull down a corrupter and let your Zealots deal with him. Ha ha.

Two things to improve this, Blizzard, I think; first, fix the Graviton Beam bug. Second, PLEASE stop telling me it's strong vs. Void Rays, because they really are not in my opinion. Four Phoenixes with four Stalkers go up against four Void Rays, the Stalkers and Phoenixes got hammered!

@BrotherDeath: 4 Phoenixes = 600 minerals + 400 gas. 4 Stalkers = 500 minerals + 200 gas. Together this make 1100 Minerals and 600 Gas. 4 Void Rays = 1000 Minerals + 600 Gas. This means that it takes an extra 100 minerals to try to counter these, and then that counter fails and you lose. OVERPOWERED.

@BrotherDeath: are you really sure 4 Phoenix and 4 Stalker will loose against 4 Void rays ? Even with Blink and speed of Phoenix? I think as you in fact, but I want to be sure. I think Graviton beam would be good if it worked against flying too.

@ReluxOr: Didn't have Blink or speed upgrade, but I still think it's ridiculus that 8 units that are supposed to be strong vs. Void rays got knocked out by just 4 of them. It's not like Zerglins vs. Thors, either, Stalkers and Phoenixes are meant for small to medium groups, which is what they were in.

@ReluxOr:
If you heavily out-micro your opponent, you can maybe win 4 Void Rays with 8 Stalkers using Blink but not with 4 Stalkers + 4 Phoenixes, unless you happen to meet them in open ground with no possibility to charge on buildings. IMO Blizzard should categorize Void Ray as a light unit so that Phoenixes could make more damage against them. Generally in PvP Phoenix is next to useless.

@Turo: Yeh, that would work. Let me explain clearly; I have 4 Stalkers and 4 Phoenixes. My opponent had 4 Void Rays. We met at the edge of my base, with a sheer cliff between the two forces. He attacked my buildings, so I attack-moved my Stalkers and microed my Phoenixes. he vapourised my Stalkers and started on my Phoenixes. When I tried to move them away, he would simply switch to my buildings and continue to charge. I couldn't draw them away, and if I trid to meet them head-on, I would lose, despite the damage from my Stalkers. And even if I did win, I was skint, and he would just keep producing.

@BrotherDeath: I think that may be the problem. Void Rays do more damage to Amoured, especially when charged up. Stalkers have to get the first hit. I had 2 Stalkers take out a Void Ray, because they got the first shot and some micro. -- Probably you should have attacked with the Phoenixes first to draw fire and cause the Void Rays to lose charge and then bring Stalkers. Or just more Pheonixes than Stalkers.

A natrual counter to Mutalisks...faster...stronger...Mutalisks being the only light armored flying unit ingame...and the Gravition Beam can come handy if you fear Siege Tanks Infestors and Queens...theyr a tad squishy but they still got potential.

@Likkan: not only mutalisks. Light are also: phoenixes, banshees, observers and ravens. + phoenixes are good against vikings and void rays altough they are not light. Graviton for pulling out strong units from game for while (u can shoot em if u have group of phoenixes) or simply destroying workers or light units.

What I think Blizzard should try is maybe letting the Pheonix attack ground targets. Then maybe Protoss players wouldn't use voids so much! But make it so they only have their vs. Light bonus against air.

Phenix are definitively not good against void ray. At least they can do something but, no, they are not good against these. Maybe high-templar psi-storm or archonte are good against void-ray (wanting your comments on this topic). And that is the point. It would be good if the phenix graviton beam was able to disable void rays and other non-massive flying units. Or is it? Anyway, disabled air units may be easy pray to high templar and archonte. Please add a research for a speed increase or range increase to phenix to maximize their hit-and-run possibilities.

@ReluxOr: psi storm is not enough powerful for a 250 hp unit and archon has like 360 hp so its perfect target for void. Archon gives only 20 dmg every 1,75sec on voids so this and its large health pool will allow voids to charge up and destroy him. Phoenixes are good because they are the fastest crafts in the game and wont allow voids to charge up (speed and their low hp). Hit and run with them and voids are dead(maybye dmg is not high 2x 5 but they work good against voids)
