The Phoenix is a swift and deadly spacecraft that is rapidly replacing the older Scouts and Corsairs of the Protoss main fleet. Phoenix patrols are a common sight on the outer rim of Protoss territory, where they scour deep space for alien threats. The Phoenix’s armament of Twin Ion Cannons is well suited for ship-to-ship combat and proficient at strafing light ground targets. When confronted by more dangerous enemies, a Phoenix pilot can unleash a short-lived gravity beam by overloading the ship’s warp field through its inertial drive. The beam can immobilize an opponent for a few precious seconds.

Units
Phoenix
General Strategy
- Light craft that can attack air units.
- Very fast unit, good for scouting or hunting down slow-moving air units that cannot retaliate, like Overlords or Banshees.
- Increased damage against light targets, like Mutalisks.
- Can lift non-massive enemy units with its Graviton Beam. This is particularly useful to take dangerous targets out of the battle, or destroy them if you have enough Phoenixes.
- The Phoenix can fire its weapons while moving, giving it a slight edge in tactical maneuverability.
Countermeasures
VS Terran
- Train a Ghost and use an EMP round to drain their energy and damage their shields.
- Launch Vikings, but be wary of hit-and-run tactics since Phoenixes are much faster.
- Use large groups of Marines, with a few Thors to support them if possible.
VS Zerg
- Corruptors are very effective against Phoenixes.
- Build Hydralisks, and be sure to research the Grooved Spines upgrade.
VS Protoss
- Build Stalkers to combat them; research Blink to make it more difficult for them to escape.
- Summon High Templars and use the Feedback ability to drain their energy and deal damage.

The same example:
Marauder > Zealot
Stalker > Mutalisk
Phoenix beats Void Rays cost for cost
They are also very easy to micro and make the VR lose charges due to target switching.
Phoenix = micro unit.
If you don't micro it properly, it will suck against everything.
Range is increased from 4 to 6.
or
Damage is increased from 5 (10Light) to 8(16 Light)
or
Gravitation Beam ability cost is decreased from 50 energy to 25 energy.
only carriers and battlecruisers will give you pause, and corruptors to some extend.
hit and run will virtually annihilate every over air unit.
Say what? Having one lift up and the other kill it don't count as strafing!
You could pull down a corrupter and let your Zealots deal with him. Ha ha.
If you heavily out-micro your opponent, you can maybe win 4 Void Rays with 8 Stalkers using Blink but not with 4 Stalkers + 4 Phoenixes, unless you happen to meet them in open ground with no possibility to charge on buildings. IMO Blizzard should categorize Void Ray as a light unit so that Phoenixes could make more damage against them. Generally in PvP Phoenix is next to useless.
