Units

Raven

The Raven is an all-around workhorse that combines the functions of a surveillance drone and a combat engineer. A common sight among the fringe-world colonies, these robust air-mobile vehicles are built to operate independently in harsh climates. Ravens excel in protection and reconnaissance due to their defensive Auto-Turrets and their advanced sensors, which can detect cloaked or burrowed enemies. The Terran Dominion initially designed the Raven to give low-level protection to its most isolated outposts, but recently the Raven has been used in escalating levels of conflict to replace the older and costlier Science Vessel.

Flight Manual

  • Support craft with detection capabilities, it can also deploy Auto-Turrets and Point Defense Drones. Can also gain Seeker Missile ability.
  • Use it to reveal cloaked/burrowed units or hallucinations and to support your troops.
  • Vulnerable to enemy fire, so keep it protected and hot-keyed to a different control group.
  • Do a diversionary assault on the front of the enemy base while you use a few Ravens to deploy Auto-Turrets behind the enemy’s mineral line.
  • Launch Point Defense Drones to protect your units from enemy missiles.

Tech Lab Upgrades

  • Corvid Reactor: increases the starting energy of Ravens by 25.
  • Durable Materials: extends the timed duration of Raven Auto Turrets, Seeker Missiles, and Point Defense Drones.
  • Seeker Missile: enables Ravens to use the Seeker Missile ability. This missile chases its target. It has enough fuel for 15 seconds and deals up to 100 area damage.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Place Missile Turrets behind your mineral line and send in Marines or a couple Thors.
  • Be sure to attack them from different sides in case of Seeker Missiles – be ready to run away if they attack you with these.
  • Use Ghosts to drain the Ravens’ energy by means of EMP rounds.
VS Zerg
  • Use the Queen in tandem with a few well placed Spore Crawlers.
  • Don’t clump up your units and always attack from two sides at once.
  • Mutalisks are the best to take them down due to their superior speed. They can outrun the Seeker Missile without too much trouble.
  • If you have Hydralisks, be sure to have the Grooved Spines upgrade and always attack from two sides at once or spread out.
VS Protoss
  • Cover your probes with Photon Cannons.
  • Focus fire the Ravens using Stalkers. Be prepared to use Blink to run away from their Seeker Missile or ensure a kill on a damaged Raven.
  • Use the High Templar Feedback ability to drain their energy and deal damage. If the Raven’s energy reserves are full, they will die in one cast of this ability.
  • The Phoenix is fast and does extra damage against Ravens, and its speed gives it a good chance to escape from seeker missiles.

Question 1: What's the point of the 1 starting armor? It never engages in combat directly.
Question 2: Why does auto-turret cost twice the energy of infested terran?
Question 3: Do you really expect us to use this at 200 gas a piece?
Science Vessel in HoTS, please.

@Svartben: Hi. You use this unit mainly as a support unit. The point is that it requires alot of micromanagement. You have to be very skilled in order to make it cost-worthy. If you can manage to micro it/them (group) they can really make a difference on the battlefield when every single unit counts. :)

They should have 0 armor and each shot from the point defense drone should cost 20 energy.

@Knalraap: Yes, it is. The campaign explains its creation(or so i understood) with copying the Protoss Observer - as a unmanned flying unit , that can support defensive or offensive tactics.

my favorite unit if we ignore its annoying voice.
its like a swiss army knife:
its a detector at first.
good for harassing economy, put up some turrets near mineral fields. fire and forget!
it also comes in handy escorting fragile units with defense drones.
and good against masses with seeker missiles.

@Mikke: The "combat engineer" was removed because people watching the early battle reports thought they looked ugly. The actual use and abilities were the same, I think, except fpr the hunter-seeker missile, which was added later on. Think the original had repair or some such instead...

I preferred the scrapped science vessel/combat engineer! I don't know what its name is. All I know that scaled version of it is a "wild animal" so it's not totally scrapped :) I want critters here so we can comment them and read information about them!

what missiles does the point defense drone protect against? the only ones i can think of are banshee, viking, missile turrets, possibly marauders (but doubtful) if so this ability would only be useful in tvt matches

@EALIAS: It means missile as in ranged attacks. For example it defends against Stalkers and Hydras too.

The Point Defense Drone is an invaluable tool. It can make your defensive line last that much longer, or it can turn a balanced battle between equal forces into a slaughter for the side that doesn't employ them. I love it!

"these robust air-mobile vehicles are built to operate independently in harsh climates" If these are robotic drones controlled by a remote operator, then how come I can use Nova to mind control them? Did she somehow use her powers to feedback through the system and mind control the operator? LOL

@Levelord: i don't know whether or not they are UAVs, but the sentence you quoted doesn't seem to suggest they are, "built to operate independently" probably means independently from other units ie without support, rather than independent of a pilot

@EALIAS: good point. Except the piu'piu'piu cannon they are used as detectors 90% of the time. Not useful to make an army only wih them... The word DRONE in the descrption kind of points to the fact that they are UAVs...
Login to rate
@ThorrKraft: first, aint' that a UMV? as in un mand viecle ? and second, i have made armies of ravens only, hunter seeker is a killer abilitie and the PDD is awsomwe too, you can drasticly reduce the fire power of enemy armies when used ,assively.
