Units

Thor

The Thor project has been shrouded in mystery since its inception. Agents of the Umojan Protectorate were the first to investigate the Dominion’s new terror weapon. Images from this investigation showed a huge bipedal war machine armed with a dorsal artillery battery that wouldn’t be out of place on a battleship. Most disturbing of all was the discovery that this monster could be built rapidly from the ground up by a standard Factory.

Driver’s Handbook

  • Massive armored unit that can attack both air and ground targets.
  • Its main cannons deal heavy damage to all land-based units and structures, while its missile launchers keep enemy air forces at bay, especially Mutalisks.
  • Very vulnerable without support.
  • Slow-moving and costly to produce. Combine with SCVs for field repairs, and Medivacs to ferry them quickly across the battlefield.
  • Equipped with powerful 250mm strike cannons that incapacitate the target and deal 500 points of damage over the course of 6 seconds. This weapon can be fired against ground units and structures (best used against enemy Thors, Ultralisks, or Colossi).

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Tanks in Siege Mode with infantry support are a great way to eliminate Thors and their escort.
  • Cloaked Banshees allow you to attack on your terms; try to catch the enemy on the move and beware of Scanner Sweeps.
  • Assemble a large force of Marauders and focus fire. Works best if you research Stimpacks and build a few Medivacs.
  • Use Battlecruisers, and especially their Yamato Cannon, against Thors.
VS Zerg
  • For the most part, large groups of smaller units work better against Thors. Try to attack from different directions simultaneously and don’t forget to focus fire.
  • Use Zerglings to support your Roaches or Hydralisks. Be sure to research Metabolic Boost, Tunneling Claws, and Grooved Spines.
  • Infestors can take over a Thor using neural parasite, turning the tide of battle in your favor.
VS Protoss
  • Immortals excel against Thors due to their Hardened Shields and high damage against armored targets.
  • Employ a large force of Zealots and Dark Templars to surround them. Be sure to have the Charge upgrade for your Zealots and to designate a Thor as your target. If you use attack move, your units will charge the escorts.
  • Use the High Templar Feedback ability to drain their energy and deal instant damage. This will prevent them from using the 250mm strike cannons.
  • Void rays work well against Thors.

I've found a slight bug with the thor: If they attack ground the air cooldown is set off, making it impossible to attack ground immediately followed by air. However this does not apply to the thor the other way around. You can attack air and immediately follow it up with a ground attack. THis means that a thor can attack air as normal, and still sneak in a ground attack every 3 sec., meaning the thor still retains about 40% of its dps vs ground while attacking air. I think this should be fixed.

I like most of the new units especially Thor,Banshee and Marauder. But don't you think that Blizzard has already overdid it with Norse names for units-both mythology and history? Seriously.Odin,Thor,Valkyrie,Viking,Banshee is from Irish mythology,Valhalla(test facility),Loki(in Engine of Destruction),Hel's Angels etc. What are they going to do when they run out? I believe they already have-just use Ragnarok for something in the game and we are done.

@IronStathis: Irish isnt Norse, Odin, Thor, Valkyrie, Viking, Baneshee, Valhalla, Loki Hel and Ragnarok is from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. And by the way, learn to use space between sentences.

@IronStathis:

I like the Norse mythological connection. And I think many other sc2 players are also happy that their ancient religion and culture is refered to such a great game.

@Zerging: Well its not only danish...Vikings where all over scandinavia and to some extent russia (viking tribes wandering from Sweden laying the foundation of the Rus kingdoms).

But Irish...nah author must have made a typo or something..? Celtic religion is indeed something entirely different.

Also Thor AoE owns all air units if they are massed. There is only one unit in each race that comes anywhere near defeating thors: siege tanks in siege mode, colossi, and infestors, however if the thors are supported with their own tanks colossi and infestors don't stand a chance anymore. To add insult to injury thors can be repaired, making it even harder especially for protoss to defeat thors. At least zerg usually has a better economy allowing the zerg to throw a second maxed out army at the terran right afterwards, but protoss is worst in terms of economy.

@StarWars: You are completly wrong about colossi. They are strong vs light units. Try to put a thor and a colossi against each other and you will see that the colossus deals 50 damage at it's best before it is destroyed. Thor is the strongest ground unit that is meant for taking out heavy targets. It even crushes ultralisks.

@StarWars: Again you fail. Please don't provide wrong information.
Immortals are the best counter-units to Thors. Yes, thors take out immortals with their 250mm strike cannons, BUT, the fewest ones are going for that uppgrade. Besides, protoss will normally have more immortals than Terran has thors, atleast in mid-game, therfore unless thors are support by SCV's or you are great microer or your thors stand on a cliff where immortals lack vision, your thors are doomed. Trust me, I use them pretty often. Also if you uppgrade their shields or cannons, they might just about stand a chance against immortals, assuming you have made uppgrades to 3 degree.

"Repair me you idiot!" lol I love this unit, even though in most games I cba to build up enough, Ill normally stick with infantry 3/3 with medics but when it comes to "heavy metal" then Thor is insane if you have a handful of them. Nice quotes too, this unit was designed great and even the mission to steal Odin was great. I dont think HotS would be that interesting with Zerg...maybe Protoss campaign woild be cool and "tech" like but Im not looking forward for Zerg campaign at all :-/

I think the thor doesnt need energy anymore to use their ability. Blizzard, please keep up with your own changes :p

Mass of Battlecruisers will make Thors a scrap metal with or without Yamato Cannon. This is the most effective counter from Terran I know for these bastards, but its very costly but so are the Thors also.
