Void Ray

The reunification of the Aiur Protoss and the Dark Templar has allowed the two groups to combine their divergent technologies, and their collaboration has produced astonishing new developments. The Void Ray is built around the newly developed prismatic core, which serves as a virtually eternal power source. When the Void Ray has locked onto a target and deployed its flux field projectors, it can shoot searing beams of energy that grow exponentially more powerful over time. Even heavily armored structures and warships have been incinerated by the Void Ray, leading some Terrans to believe that it will eventually replace the Carrier as the flagship of the Protoss fleet.

General Strategy

  • Armored craft that can attack air and ground targets.
  • Highly effective against armored units.
  • The damage of its Prismatic Beam increases the longer it attacks a target.
  • When the Prismatic Beam is fully charged, you have a few seconds to start attacking a new target before you lose the full charged state. Keep them busy.
  • Good for hit-and-run tactics against enemy mineral lines.
  • Vulnerable against large numbers of enemy units.
  • Void Ray sneak attacks against enemy headquarters can be devastating.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Launch Vikings; their long air-to-air range will make it easy to bring Void Rays down.
  • Use large groups of Marines with Stimpacks and Medivac support.
  • Build Missile Turrets around your Command Center as a temporary deterrent.
VS Zerg
  • Spawn Mutalisks; be sure to focus fire.
  • Assemble a large number of Hydralisks.
  • Build Spore Crawlers around your Hatchery as a temporary deterrent.
VS Protoss
  • Engage with Stalkers, research the Blink ability if you can.
  • Phoenixes are great against Void Rays, which are too slow to outrun them.
  • Build Photon Cannons around your Nexus as a temporary deterrent.

Voidrays are OP because protoss can wall in with cannons then max out with voidrays because cannons can are taken down well only by Stanks but voidrays fly so they only need 10-20 cannon and 1-10 vrs and you can't touch them. the other thing is that they fly meaning they can just use an observer and check where there is alot of buildings and few anti air and attack there soon they are charged up fully and you can't do anything as you won't get there before level 2 at least

Void rays are not OP, they are expensive and not easy to get a critical mass of against good players. TIP for people having trouble vs Voids: if they are massing voids you HAVE to attack them, keep the number of voids down at all cost, if the Protoss get to about 15+ Voids then it is almost always gg. I find the best units that counter me when i mass voids are Thors and Infestors with fungal growth (backed with any AA units).

Bottom line, if you let someone mass a !@#$ tonne of Voids, then you deserve to lose

@nAMeMAn: ok i know im in silver 2v2 and bronze teame 2v2 but i face a mass void ray all the time with my zerg teammate. its not op its really balanced because he gets corrupters (not mutalisk) because my vikings can end the void rays with the corruption ability as a back up. A ghost is extremely beneficial as their emp's make the mass void rays easy picking for this composition. also, since they are spending all their minerals on void rays, they wont have many upgrades. beat him in that race so you can also mass up a ground army as well. see the replay from a recent game of mine to see how a long game that seemed that we were going to lose, turned out the opposite.

@NEXUS: According to your stats you haven't even played the game on ladder, how would you know if theyre OP or not ? (and yeah they may be OP in Bronze/Silver because some ppl are stupid enough to let toss get 200/200 with only Voids)

@achristes: They're OP all right. There isn't any good counter against them with Zerg. If there's at least 16 of them, there's not much you can do.
Not to mention in an even larger group. I saw them easily destroy a huge army of BCs.
Hands down, the most imbalanced unit of the game.

@CayozZ: I agree. Hydralisks have a very good dps, but since they're ground unit, u cannot cluster them as good as air units. Not to mention the mobility, or the ground surfaces on which they move. The only good technique is, if you burrow them, and wait til the VRs fly above them, but needless to say, it's really hard to carry it out, cuz u just never know where are they gonna fly. All I'm saying, that their increasing dmg output should be nerfed, cuz in large groups they are unstoppable.

@DarXwarM: Void are not OP and I can prove that. Try in a unit tester compositions that are equal cost to cost like: (9 corrputors vs 5 void rays) or (9 mutas vs 4 void rays) and you will see that both corruptors and mutas beat void rays:
corruptor = 150 min +100 gas = 250 resources
void ray = 250 min + 150 gas = 450 resources
mutas = 100 min + 100 gas = 200 resources
1. 9 corruptors = 250*9 = 2250 resources 5 void ray = 450*5= 2250 resources
2. 9 mutas = 200*9=1800 resources 4 void ray = 450*4=1800 resources

@mmagic:
1.) 250+150 is not 450
2.) its difficult to mass corruptors or mutas because they take so much gas to build while void rays have quite a nicely balanced cost

Void Rays are amazing. :D I have found two ways to counter them:; One for Terran and Zerg, respectively.
Zerg: Once you know that there are 'Rays on the field, throw down around 3/4 Spores and make Hydras.
Terran: Stim Marines, Missile Turret, done.
