WoW Summer Challenge: Karazhan

WoW Summer Challenge: Karazhan

Every week this summer, we’re challenging you to get together with a few friends to explore a part of Azeroth that you may not have seen in a while, or perform a feat that you may have never done. We’re calling them World of Warcraft Summer Challenges, and we’re going to be playing along with you as we hunt down rare achievements, get screenshots of amazing bosses, and try to find some rare gear for our transmogrification sets.

This week’s challenge is: Karazhan.

Medivh, the Last Guardian, made his home in Deadwind Pass, in the bright tower of Karazhan. Though he was the greatest wizard of his day (and humanity's intended custodian) Medivh was secretly possessed by the dark spirit of Sargeras, the Destroyer of Worlds. Through Medivh, Sargeras opened the Dark Portal and allowed the orcs to wage war upon the kingdoms of Azeroth.

Originally opened for raids of 10 players at level 70, Karazhan is teeming with a dozen bosses, many with unique events, ending with Prince Malchezaar. There are a number of reasons to explore Azeroth's original haunted castle.

Notable achievements

Desirable gear

Other odds and ends

As the war progressed, Medivh fought against Sargeras' control. The raging conflict within him finally drove the wizard irrevocably insane, until his childhood friend, Anduin Lothar, aided Medivh's young apprentice, Khadgar in storming Karazhan and slaying their former comrade. Since that day, a terrible curse has pervaded both the tower and the lands around it - casting a dark pall over Deadwind Pass and the region that is now known as Duskwood.

Please join us in this discussion thread, where we’re talking about this week’s challenge, and looking forward to your stories about how it went for you this week, your screenshots, and your suggestions for other fun reasons to take on Karazhan

I personally don't see anything wrong with these "challenges"

I loved kara back in BC , and im sure there's loads of people who don't even know about it so it'd be good for them to go have a look

Honestly... I don't know why Blizzard bother with all these moaning kids throwing tantrums because they don't get what they want when they want it. Be patient, MoP will be here soon...

Well I guess this idea went down like a lead balloon i have to agree with everyones comments that this idea sucks, each expantion was good in its own unique way, but trying to get us to go and relive them isn't a new idea (onyxia)
the only new idea here is that you want us to go do them without making it a challenge the idea that transmorg is a cool thing, OMG stop spending time with Dia-blows and work with keeping your bread and butter game current

Another evidence that this idea is indeed retarded, as the whole 4.3 patch is retardly bad as well: You disabled the comments on the Blackrock Mountain article, as you think players won't find out the purpose of these worthless articles: Greed. Some thing new: Europeans aren't as brain-washed as the US is. Our old genes still exist and have a mind of our own.

Well, now. I do miss TBC. I do miss the really awsome events from Karazhan. Or Grull, Or Maggy. Wish somehow we can replay those epic raids even at 85 (dynamic loot/boss level?) for real. Going in and pwning everything because we outgear an instance is not that fun. Unless ofc the instance fights back (first boss in AQ40 mind controlling a rogue and killing whole raid was ubernice :D)

In reply to Mert, I have to agree, TBC was the best expansion for raids and dungeons. It took so long to get gear that it always gave you something to do and work for, nowadays you are handed nearly everything and it gets boring after awhile. I'm sure I am not the only one who would say "I want the long farms for gear back from TBC!"

And hey, I have been running Karazhan for weeks on end! (^L^?)

I have to agree with a lot of the people on here, LFR needs to have more raids in it, why make your own feature impotent? I first played just after the release of BC and eventually when I'd worked hard levelling to 70 and slowly gearing myself up through normals to heroics I joined a raiding guild. We weren't raiding the top raids, as most people couldn't get to that level of gear right away, so we worked through the tiers and I loved it. It didn't matter that some people were off in Black Temple getting T6, I was working hard to make progress with my T4, T5 etc. I know you want more people to see the end content you created but to be honest I enjoyed BC even though I never got to Sunwell, it made it more mysterious.

Oh and Karazhan, I love you :)

@Mert: Just wanted to say I completely agree with you, and back then you werent bullied for having lower tier of gear, because having T4 for example was hard enough and it meant you have experience at raiding and are skillful. And Kara, here is another lover for you!

For all of you that want to raid older dungeons (cata/wolk/tbc) there is a nice friendly web site called "Openraid". From there i do all my raids , apart from ds, and trust me it runs much smoother then pugging, especialy the cata dungeons.

Panda's are Panda's. People will play it to either run the new raids, level to 90, or rp as a furry-wurry kung-fu master with a terrible terrible past where all his known family were killed yet somehow he's related to the racial leader and has a penchant for chewing pencils.

Regardless of the number of people who say, awh god pandas eurgh, the truth is, hardcore wowwers are gonna keep playing, and doing what they usually do, their only interaction with this new expansion being more pets for the stables and a couple more titles before they go back to raiding MC or Kara for fun. RP'ers are gonna rp, because its new and they can use the cross-realm zones now, pvp'ers will probably still pvp, just so they can kill pandas and not get done by the RSPCA/WWE or something. I dunno. It does make me chuckle though. MoP's gonna come out, the moaners will vehemently deny wanting to get it, then they'll get it anyways, as the time they've put in, and the potential to moan about MoP even more is there.

Personally, I don't like the panda thingy. Blizz got too cutesy, but I'll still get the expansion, level my toons, do the raids etc. I just won't make a panda. Simples. They have crappy racials anyways. It's no fun punting pandas if they only take half falling damage.

Rant over.

I still think Karazhan is the best raid instance the game has had. Long, but not excessively so. Interesting trash in reasonable amounts (except perhaps for the Curator to Illhoof path). Weird little buff books to look for and find. Several optional bosses allowing you to decide where to progress next, while still being linear enough to give a sense of progression (BWD also did this well). The introduction of a teleport system and back entrance. Nice looking and interesting interior. Varied and at the time highly unique boss mechanics (like Moroes, who vanishes repeatedly during the fight), without any of them feeling like cheap gimmicks (hi, Ultraxion!).

there isn't much i can say that everybody else hasn't already said but if someone is capable of finishing dragonsoul on a character that only got to lvl85 1 week earlier you know it's got pathetically easy, why can't things be like before WOTLK where even questing was a challange and inspired you to travel all of the regions and work together with others, now it's more worthwhile standing in org/sw waiting for random dungeons to lvl

Personally, I don't see how someone who's raided since TBC (me) wants to go and 'explore' a raid I found interesting and challenging at level 70 endgame, all those years ago. I want NEW content, or at the very least, revamped.
With the obscene profiteering from wow, blizzard could easily afford to spend some money on new or revamped content, but instead they spend the profits from one game, developing another and add 'new pets to the pet store'.
If you make people pay a subscription (and not a cheap one at that) it is reasonable to expect fairly regular new content, not a suggestion that we go have a nose around redundant raids.

I've been reading most of the replies of the others and i agree with most of them, vanilla and TBC had the advantage where the new player or alt had to grow step by step from normal dungeons to heroics then raids for tier 4 - 5 - 6
Now in cata it's not like that anymore i've been away from the game for 9 months and before 3 days i said to my self let me check back on wow and my guild, i started 370 ilvl and today i'm 380
My point is gear now is easy to get and we don't get to raid alot these days only one raid DS while the other raids are dead even my guild is not convinced to go to ToT4W or similar first cata raids not even for fun raid because it's pointless to most of them and i feel like i'm the only one willing to raid.
Now i don't want to complain only i want to give idea's that might help:
1- Why don't you allow us to raid the old raids in a cata difficulty? I meant like Black Temple or any other raid give us the option to raid it with a higher difficulty more suitable for a lvl 85.
2- For cata raids why the old raids aren't added in the LFR ? (like fireland or the other cata raids) and if the answer none will join make a special reward for the ppl finish the runs like gems, enchanting materials, gold or other items that you can think of i'm sure ppl will be motivated to join these rather than creating another alt because i don't have anything to do beside standing in Org/SW.
3- Old dungeons are forgotten and you can do the same thing for the raids to raise their difficulty according to lvl 85.
I'd like to add that LFR is really a very good add to the game for ppl who prefer the guildless type but having only 1 raid in it is not enough.

I hope Blizzard will read my post and hear our thoughts.

I've been sitting for a while reading those replys from people, and I couldn't really agree more with most of ya guys... Seriously blizzard, get in the fight, listen to us, we miss the good old times (yes, the VANILLA times).. Missing the part that we had to fight for our epics, had to fight for titles if you wanted great PVP gear... Back in vanilla times it was actually fun to spend alot of hours doing some AV, WSG etc. etc.
- If you wanted to raid and be one of the best, you had to spend hours.. Lots of hours, not just walk to the nearest AH and buy few pieces of Epic and afterwards being ready to raid! You had to gather up a team of 40 players, that required a good guild and good players who wanted to play like a team, sitting up most of the nights dieing in raids, and the booom.. Finally you downed a boss, and like 40 players were happy on VT/TS..
- Well.. Time for me to end this little reply, all I can say is; Listen to us blizzard, cause else this game is really going to die, maybe not in the next few months but it will die out slowly.
THanks for taking time, reading this :-)Cya around guys, and thanks so far for having such a great time together!

Yes i can be bored.. for example: now days you buy epics for JP that are as good as the one you get from raids, there are only one raid that is worth doing . and there are no longer any tacktics on bosses just simple dps races (or thay are way to easy to understand). Wow is a big nerf to the world and it´s shamefull how the developers just looks att the young kid´s need. i have palyed Wow for 8 years but this will be the last.

This is essentially Blizzard saying: "Look people, you pay us about 13 euro's/pounds a month to play this game. You can do more than just the daily quests and raid dungeon(s) of the latest patch."

Give Blizzard some credit for reminding all the narrowminded, bored and moaning players that they don't have to sit in Orgrimmar/Stormwind all day long while waiting for their weekly raid runs in said latest raid dungeon. Don't bring stupid discussions into this like what Blizzard does or doesn't care about, the new expansion (completely unrelated to Karazhan and the time that would be, right now) and miscellanious crap.

Either get in there and explore the world of warcraft, or go sit in your capital city with your epic flying mount, your awesome raid gear and your now-unobtainable-super-rare-title from two expansions ago and, with all due respect, shut up.

Blizzard, thank you. I WILL be visiting Karazhan again someday soon.
