Patch 5.0.4 Survival Guide

Patch 5.0.4 Survival Guide

With the release of Patch 5.0.4, a number of features and changes that aren’t strictly in the continent of Pandaria will be added to the game. I’ve drummed up this guide (with the help of a lot of other people) to ensure you’re prepared for the patch, aware of how it will impact your characters and experience, and ultimately get you into and enjoying the improvements the patch brings as quickly as possible.

You Are Prepared!

With any large patch, you’ll want to ensure you have it pre-downloaded, and ready to start up the game for the first time when it goes live. The 5.0.4 patch has been available on our background downloader for a couple weeks now, and if you haven’t yet, you’ll want to ensure you have the majority of the patch data downloaded before its release on August 29. The Background Downloader FAQ can help answer just about any question for how to get this done. To verify you have the patch fully downloaded already, just run the BackgroundDownloader.exe found in your World of Warcraft game directory.

Once the patch releases, it’s always possible you could run into an issue when installing it. Our Patch Troubleshooting page has a number of steps you can take, as well as basic and advanced steps.

One other area that trips a lot of people up when coming into a major game revision (especially one with as many changes as 5.0.4) is out of date UI AddOns. Both WoWInterface and Curse are popular UI sites that offer up-to-date addons, and you should attempt to find addons that state they support version 5.0.4 and/or the Mists of Pandaria expansion.

If you’ve been away from the game a while, or are running into UI issues, LUA/XML error messages, or “Unknown” entities, it may be a reasonable option to just wipe everything clean and start your AddOn adventures over. Our UI Reset FAQ can help!

Class Changes

Certainly one of the biggest changes coming in 5.0.4 is the new talent system, and with that comes a ton of changes and new spells and abilities, but before we get to that, a number of changes have been made that can impact how you play your class. These range from minor to major, but almost all specs have altered rotations, and a few have been completely redesigned. Once the patch launches be prepared to spend a little time reacquainting yourself with each ability, and setting your action bars up. Here are just a few of the highlights to be aware of.

 Death Knight
Presences have changed. Frost Presence now doubles Runic Power generation, and each specialization learns a passive effect that should cause that specialization to favor the corresponding Presence for general use. Necrotic Strike, as well as the new talent Death Siphon, both cost a Death Rune, meaning that they can only be used when one of your runes has been transformed to Death.

 Druid
The Feral specialization has been split into Feral (for Cat-focused Druids) and Guardian (for Bear-focused Druids) specializations. Each of the four specializations has a more distinct and different set of tools, but all of the spells available to the specialization are now useful. For example, Feral and Guardian Druids can cast Healing Touch for a useful amount of healing, and Balance and Restoration Druids can make better use of the Cat Form and Bear Form abilities they have.

 Hunter
There is no longer a minimum range for the class. The ranged weapon slot has been removed from the game; hunters now equip their ranged weapon in the main hand weapon slot. Hunters now benefit from Expertise as their ranged attacks can be dodged. Any type of pet can now choose any specialization (Ferocity, Tenacity, or Cunning).

Mage: Mages received many changes intended to flesh out rotations and make them more interesting. Arcane Mages now have a more complex rotation. Fire Mages now have tools to control the random nature of their spells. Frost Mages are now considerably stronger at sustained damage dealing, and now viable in PvE. Much of the crowd control and survivability that was unique to Frost has been spread to the whole class, or made available to all specs as talents.

Paladin: Paladins now have several ranged abilities, though remain primarily melee combatants. In-line with streamlining raid buffs (more on that below), Auras have been removed, and the buff focus is now on Seals. Paladins can now store up to 5 Holy Power at a time, but still can only use up to 3 on each Holy Power spender.

Priest: Mana pools are fixed for all casters (more on this below). Chakras are now more similar to warrior stances. Changes have been made to Discipline to further support the damage absorption playstyle. Shadow Priests now have Shadow Orbs as a resource, which can be generated by some of their basic spells, and spent on either strong damage or crowd control.

Rogue: Poisons are now spellbook abilities that affect both weapons at once. Poisons are divided into two categories, Lethal (Deadly or Wound Poison) and Non-Lethal (the rest), and you may have one poison of each type active at once. Many abilities that used to be restricted to a single specialization are now talents and available to all specializations; so you can have a Shadowstepping Combat Rogue or an Assassination Rogue with Cheat Death. Dagger speeds have been normalized such that the niche of the “fast dagger” intended for the off-hand no longer exists. Any dagger should be fine to equip in either hand.

Shaman: Totems no longer provide long-term buffs. Some of the old passive effects are now innately provided by the shaman. Totems instead have short-term situational benefits. In light of this the totem multidrop UI has been removed, though all totem spells are now sorted under draggable elemental flyouts in the spellbook.

Warlock: Each warlock specialization has a unique secondary resource which allows them temporary surges in power. Affliction warlocks focus more on layering multiple periodic damage effects, and amplifying their effects, and use Soul Shards rotationally for strong damage, or occasionally for utility as before. Demonology warlocks now have a new Demonic Fury resource, instead of Soul Shards, which is built by casting their normal spells. Destruction warlocks now use Unstable Embers as a resource, which is built up slowly through casting their normal spells, and spent in bursts of massive damage. warlocks no longer use armor spells, instead gaining additional armor and bonus health passively. All demons deal similar damage and are no longer linked to a specific spec. Doomguard, Infernal and Soulstone cooldowns reset upon wiping to a raid or dungeon boss.

Warrior: The design of Rage has changed to function more like a valuable resource. Warriors no longer naturally gain rage from taking damage, but instead generate rage with their primary attacks, such as Mortal Strike, Bloodthirst, and Shield Slam. Stances also now share a single action bar, rather than changing your action bar, and abilities are no longer restricted by stance. In addition, the benefits of the stances have changed considerably, with Berserker Stance allowing the Warrior to gain some rage from taking damage, Battle Stance making the Warrior gain additional rage from dealing damage, and Defensive Stance focused on survivability.

New Talent System

The new talent system redefines how you create your character in World of Warcraft, while keeping the core style and feeling of each class and specialization intact. When launching the patch for the first time and hitting ‘N’ to open your talent pane, you’ll notice a number of changes.

The most obvious is a new layout for specializations, which now show the Core Abilities for each class spec. These are the defining skills that can only be used when you have that spec active.

The talent tab will show you the new talent system. You have a wide variety of useful and powerful abilities available to you regardless of your spec, but you may only select one talent from each row. Many of these tend to be old talents, sometimes with a bit of a change, while others are completely new abilities. These choices tend to be quite difficult, and you should expect to spend time considering each. But don’t get too discouraged, you can reset a single talent at any time (and anywhere) by using a Tome of Clear Mind (a tradable item crafted by Inscription), or reset all of them by visiting your class trainer.

Of course with a change this vast all talents have been reset, and you’ll be able to explore the new skills and talents as you choose them for the first time!

Glyphs

Glyphs are now a bit more focused, and a bit more fun. Prime glyphs are being removed, and Major glyphs are taking on the majority of the power and utility bonuses from both Prime and Minor glyphs. Minor glyphs are instead focusing on more fun aspects, and cosmetic customization.

Quality of Life

There are a ton of changes in 5.0.4, and you should definitely check out the full patch notes on August 28th, but a few of these are worth calling out because of how wonderfully pleasing they’ll be every time you log in.

  • All cooking awards have been combined into a single currency: Epicureans Awards. This not only cleans up your currency list a bit, but means that doing the daily quests in Stormwind can help you buy the Chef’s Hat in Dalaran.
  • AoE looting! Round up a ton of enemies, nuke ‘em, and then pick up all of their loot with a single right click – bag space permitting.
  • The Daily Quest cap is removed. While this will truly shine in Mists of Pandaria with far more robust daily quests, you can certainly take advantage of it before then.
  • Account-wide mounts, pets, and achievements! It’s finally here, and you’ll be able to enjoy just about every mount and pet you own on any character, and any license, under a single Battle.net account. You can also work on a wide variety of Achievements from multiple characters.
  • A new help system has been added to many of the UI elements and menus. You can toggle hints on and off by clicking the "i" button in the upper left corner of windows that have it.
  • New spells are now learned automatically when you level up. Class trainers are only needed to change talents, glyphs, class specialization, or to utilize the dual specialization feature.
  • Mana pools are capped. Not necessarily a quality of life improvement, but this change will impact all mana-using classes and the stats they want. Intellect will still make skills more powerful, and Spirit will still regenerate mana faster. The amounts you choose for each is a bit more compelling now.

There’s a bunch of other stuff in the patch, and if you think we missed something crucial here be sure to let others know in the comments below.

Massively Multiplayer

There are a few changes to be aware that impact how you interact with and play with others.

  • New buff and debuff design. This builds off the class section above, but the basic premise is that there is now a specific list of available buffs and debuffs, and each are castable by a few classes or specs. When stepping into a raid you know you should have 8 buffs, and if you don’t, there’s probably at least one person that can cast it.
  • BattleTag support. If you’ve played Diablo III you’re already well acquainted with BattleTags (and you have one!). If not, you should make one now. A BattleTag is your permanent account-wide nickname on Battle.net, so choose it wisely. BattleTags can do anything RealID can, but anonymously. RealID should be kept for your real life friends and family, and BattleTag can be used for acquaintances are others you don’t want to reveal you real name to.
  • Unified PvE queue. You can now queue for dungeons, raids, and other queue-able content in one handy place, all at once, and just see what pops up first.
  • Cross-Realm Zones. We’ll be rolling this feature out beginning with a few realms at the launch of 5.0.4, and increasing until all realms are included for the release of Mists of Pandaria. If you’re looking to level a new character up before Mists of Pandaria, this feature will have a noticeable impact on the world around you.
  • There’s also a new roll frame that pulls all the loot rolls out of the chat window and into its own spot.

Theramore's Fall

The first two Scenarios are coming with 5.0.4, but they won’t be enabled until a few weeks before the Mists of Pandaria expansion release. Keep an eye on the front page of this blog for more info.

The Kitchen Sink

None of this stuff seemed to fit anywhere else, but these are important bits to take note of to better understand way lay ahead in the land of 5.0.4.

  • Currency conversion. In case you missed it, Kaivax put together the specifics of the currency conversion rollout in 5.0.4 and beyond.
  • PvP Season 11 ends. As usual, we’ll be determining who is getting end-of-season awards, so stay put and don’t change realm if you think you’re eligible. Conquest points will also automatically convert to Honor points at this time.
  • Head enchants removed. Another bit explained a while ago was the beheading of faction enchants. The design intent will be fully seen in Mists of Pandaria with the new factions, but the change (like so many others) will hit with this patch.
  • Spell Penetration has been replaced by PvP Power, and Resilience is now PvP Resilience. A blog Ghostcrawler wrote up was posted a while back with the first incarnation of this change, and the design intent remains true.
  • The ranged/relic/thrown item slot has been removed. All weapons should now be equipped in the weapon slot, and ranged weapons, including wands, have been adjusted to be more powerful.

Well, that should do it. These are some big and exciting changes, and I’m certain I forgot one or more of them. If you have any helpful info or tips to ensure you and others can get into the game, set up, and killing giant boars (or each other) as fast as possible, post it in the comments below!

As usual some of the minor changes are good, most major changes are utter crap. I don't know why they didn't just make an item called: weapon, that does whatever for each class. Then we can have weapon tier 2 etc. Also classes are overcomplicated, there could be one class with 3 button called tank, heal and dps...

@Gothren: The flaw in your idea is that it forces people to do content that they may not want to do, not to mention that they may not be skilled enough, may not have the time to, or may not know enough people to do the raid content you speak of. Remember, lvl 60 raids needed 40 people, and classic Naxxramas is still hard by design compareds to raids today.

What you describe is absolute and uncompromising elitism in it's worst form. We already get that in a horrible degree in the game as it is.

I do hate, however, how the dungeon/raid finder has bred the most intollerable, lazy, impatient, unskilled and bad mannered playerbase in any online game to date.

@Proteus: Are you serious? I logged in today after i got my free 7 day playtime and i couldn't notice how easy everything is ... in the questing phase, no mob can take more than 10% of my hp... in the dungeon phase, after i got used to the new "way", i could hold up the whole bloody party filled with aggro taking newbies (nothing against them, but they must be called somehow) without breakin a sweat, i'm yet to see how PvP has changed, because everything else is nerfed to be a walk in the park, just like D3 is now after the big patch :)

@Muccelverde: dont mix the 2 games, d3 was supposed to be an ARPG. (= fast pace, item based, with character development). It is instead a mini wow with gold/creditcard based economy.

Actualy, a crazy ideea for new players:
Why not blizz dont put a mark at lvl 60 and u gotta do the full raid that comes at 60 then u move on to 61....same for 70, 80, 85....make quest lines pre-raid and make them work for a certain ilvl so they dont just do the raid once to move on :)), dont allow higher lvl players to join these raids for the face-roll, then at lvl 90 u will be a complete player, u will learn to appreciate the game and not see it just as a race to max level, spamming for gear and bang, end game :))
But this way wow will lose many players ofc cuz if u want to make an alt u gotta go through the ''wars'' all over :)) or if u done it once you should do it again since u are a veteran by any law now :))
I for 1 will keep on this DK for as long as i play wow, pala and warr will only come to my attention to lvl till 90 and then keep them for really borring times, it really doesnt matter u got 20 max lvl toons if dont play any of them right or u just play them for the sake of having them.
I have dominated all the aspects of the game so far since i got the DK, I was always between 1st and 3rd in dmg in any raid, even RBG, tanking was always OP not to mention the Howling Blast / Death coil perpetuous range combo witch for a melee is preatty OP :) one spell gives Rp and one dumps it...
My dream would be a WOW game with the graphic awesomeness that they show in the cinematics...
But I digess, main ideea would be to make the game for real players and if u ain't one u will certanly become one if what i said above came true :)
Never the less, i shall make a panda to try all the /emotes and then DELETE it, there will be enough of them for me to kill in pvp and overtake in dmg and prove that if u know your class no nerf can stop u :))

@Góthrén: do you already have a warrior or you just theorycrafting about that nerf stuff? in my battlegroup I checked at the end of the season the 3v3 ladder... there were only 2 warriors in the top 100 team and 1 was only "guarding" the team alone with 1k personal... yeah, if you just know your class, then no nerfs can stop you, sure...
if blizzard wants to nerf something, then they CAN do it and if something doesnt realy got nerfed that means blizzard just tried to chill other players, just to keep them and the STILL OVERPOWERED class playing and PAYING...
btw, I also want to see how lvl 90 pvp will work out, cause currently a holy paladin have more burst than a warrior... or at least almost the same with the right glyps and talents; it's just so stupid how healers and dps classes that have heals work at every pre-expansion patch, it's just strange that a holy paladin can soooo damn easily kill a dps just by spamming denounce now, it crits 16-20k into full pvp gear, its just WTF?! my execute can crit into colossus 40k if I got some extra proc (enrage while trinket used etc - if that 6 sec berserker rage is gone)...
and I have another interesting question for blizz, if they read this: Why do hunters and warlocks have extra stam passive WHILE warriors and DKs dont? just WHY? first you came up with making cloth and plate items give the same ammount of stam, then you just deleted the warriors passive stam "buff", while the warlocks still kept it, same with DKs, I think we realy supposed to be a litle bit more tanky in pvp even if we're not specced as tank just by geting some class wide passive stam bonus like the warlocks and hunters

I think the talents nerf is exceeded only by the incredibly clumsy mess of "account-wide" achievements. They're not account-wide - you still get them all on every character (apart from some of the meta-achievements which depend purely on other achievements), except that now you can't tell where you are properly, without using an add-on. Gratuitous and ill-thought-out dumbing down. It should have been (i) optional and (ii) properly implemented so that if you did choose it, you saw only the account-level status.

I miss the ranged slot too - I hadn't realised it was a straight swap for the pet battle gimmick. Ho hum.

Now then, can someone tell me how to bring up my selection of mounts? The "Mounts" tab is gone, and I can't find any reference to it anywhere. I presume I'm missing something terribly obvious.

The elimination of ranged weapons slot .... is a BIIIGGG! mistache... is one of the thing i play WOW ... instead of other mmorpg... now i will consider 2 times to migrate...how I play now my hunter with no 2H weapon for melee, or rogue not dual wield and ranged, or warr ( my precious one !) with no ranged and dual wield 2H, or my priest ( my healer with wand for beautiful PVE ! ) or my mage without wand ?? common I understand your engine limitation ( and telling crap about listening to players !), is clear that you have taken out the ranged slot because you put it to pet battle ( again because engine limitation ;) ) and so on... Right I've been reading some of the posts over the last few days and some I agree on and some I disagree with! My account with Blizzard is approach the decade mark(2005) and I will admit after years of spending time and money on building up my character to the way I like to play and it being nerfed in one sudden update is rather sad and frustrating. I understand that change is needed but such a huge one..........? WTF!

And to those that say the Pandas aren't part of the Warcraft World I think you need to play the W3 expansion "Frozen Throne". "Pandarian Brewmaster".

I will also admit that over the years the game has become easier. Gonner are the days when you reached your next lvl(talking about when it was just WOW not even when TBC came out!) that that felt like an achievement on it's own.
The new talent tree has become far to general...! It's made it feel to common. If that was the only thing they changed back the old talent tree system to before the update but to suit the new skill structure that would be great.
Blizzard seems to have forgotten about the old account holders, the ones that's been paying for the growth and developement of the game for years!

So Blizzard you seem to have made the new players happy but what have you done to keep the veterans in the game? Don't forget that before TBC you already had 6 million subscribers, that's a lot of veterans.

Lets face it, the sad old gamers like me should have dropped out at TBC. Instead we stuck around, hoping the glory days would come back eventually. They didn't. Blizzard had drawn us all in and no longer felt the need to feed us. Instead they turned to the fringe players who had just stuck their heads around the door to see where the noise was coming from. This was where they were going to make their money, lets see what these guys want and give them as much as they can carry. So we got the Death Knights - a class that was impossible to kill and came pre-levelled and laden with top of the range gear, plus a free horse. This wasn't enough, you still had to put in a little effort to get anywhere. Umpteen patches later we find ourselves with MoP. A pasty, bloated corpse of a once great RPG that has washed up on the beach. No challenges whatsoever for the casual gamer, just turn up and grab all your free stuff. Haven't read anything about the new raids but if DS is anything to go by, they are not going to be worth going to - a raid that starts off easy and then gets nerfed long before anyone has a chance to get frustrated. I accept that the game had to evolve and Blizzard had to listen to the majority of their customers, I just wish they had created an alternative for them rather than suck all the life out of WoW

@Arreus:
Since you have full 378 gear, don't complain. Try DS HC and i'll promise you that you will find it more challenging. The fact that people like you level up a character to 85 and get full dungeon gear, makes med sad. They dont like challenges. You need to set a goal in the game, so that you wont get tired of it. Like my other characters. I got the Dragonwrath. It is really hard to get for some people, and for some it's just another day. People who is expirenced are more likely to get it, cause they know how to play. Then there are people like you, complaining about how "easy" the game has become. Try dragon soul is HC, i promise you, you wont make it without the right skills.

@Arreus: Stop whinging. If you don't enjoy the game, don't play it. Simple. MoP is going to be a great expansion, just as Cata was. Maybe its not so much of a challenge for you, but find something that is. Have you maxed out on all gear? No, you've stuck with 378. So instead of criticising the content, actually go out and explore it.

People like you are the ones that suck life out of games.

But i DO like the new system... granted it DOES make it easier... but as a fring player i will be forever know as a noob untill at least level 150 (if i stick around that long). But the truth of the matter is the fact that, Warcraft IS dying... these are its *end-days* and what does any gaming company do just before they die of exauhstion? They *revamp the system, give us freebies and basically make so even the Dreaded *noob* can feel like a champion* ... its sad to say, but i give WoW 5 more years, max

@Arreus: When The Burning Crusade was up, you could kill someone with one blow. Rogues were killing like, "ambush, vanish, ambush, preperation, ambush." It was so unfair. With this an previous patch, pvp is more fair, dungeon bosses are more dangerous, and auction houses are more effective. We have new races, new classes, new areas, new adventures. Thats better actually.

Stop thinking just the negatives. Add it some positive points and evantually you will see this is better.

@Arreus: i agree with your post there, blizzard does cave in for moneys, almost like EA, and by doing that they feed the young and "unexperianced" with Skinner-box addiction.
I still like the game though somewhat, and i do hope that MoP will be a fresh start.. with decent players, with dignity and basic sence.
Im sure blizzard is just trying to "survive" (doing whatever the 20% of the players moan about in the forums).
Im looking forward to MoP. but what id love, is more options for the oldies and the newbs, could make the game more appealing for both factions :P

@Göránpérsson: I switched mains mid-Cata, hence the low gear on this char. Did most of DS HC on other chars and it was challenging but only due to the boss's hitpoints, not the fight mechanics. Best thing (imho) about WOLTK was the Arthas fight, took a while to learn the mechanics and even longer to master them. There's nothing in Cata that comes close to that.

@Vinora: Maxing gear is neither a challenge nor an incentive. With LFR, it's ridiculously easy to get great gear now. Back in the days of TBC you could spend an hour or two tramping around a heroic dungeon trying to figure out better ways of clearing trash and maybe, if you were lucky, end up with a nice shiny epic. That was the sort of challenge I enjoyed. Nowadays you can run round the 3 toughest dungeons in less than an hour and end up with 4 or 5 pieces. The MoP dungeons will no doubt be tricky to start with but will also soon end up as 15 minute zergs. Then what are you left with? Friggin Pokemon!
"People like me"? People who have forked out a fortune over the years and invested lots of time in developing charatcters, only to find that all that work was for nothing as the talent trees have dwindled to 6 points in relatively useless talents? Damn straight I'm gonna whinge! The game has only changed and developed over the years because people expressed their opinions. Blizzard listened to the majority and tailored the game to suit them. This doesn't mean that I can't freely express my opinion and say what I would like to see in this game.

@Nightspring: Never been a PVPer so can't really comment on that. Not sure I agree about dungeon bosses being tougher. The original Cata dungeons were tough but the fights were largely gear checks, and it wasn't long before Blizzard started nerfing them

I don't get you guys, seriously, before the patch you all cry at how bad and messed up the game is, so Blizzard actually put effort into changing things and making WoW better for you all, yet you carry on too moan, also Pet Battle System isn't for Kids, if anything it's for people who used to play pokemon when they were little kids, I mean I'm 17 so I'm looking forward to it because it'll remind me of the pokemon days, so if you guys keep qq'ing about the changes, go play runescape or somethin'

@Barbancot: Dupa nume esti din Ro :)
I do agree with most of the posts on this forum, but, never the less this game became to comercial. I dinged 85 on my pally after i left him on 81 after wotlk was gone and after i got to 85 it took me 4 days of spaming the twilight HC and replaced most of my blue gear with PVP gear from AH (hence the Ilvl) req for LFR and after the 1 LFR i had 389 and on 4th day I did 7/8 normal DS10...I admit as tank its easy but that was too easy :)
Therefore i decided to keep on this DK witch i got since they came live and i will keep it casual, wow has no more challanges for me. Only thing keeping me here is the raid team I am with for the past 2 years, same ppl but dif classes to adress patch changes...so basically the last 2 months for me ware only about getting ALL the possible transmog gear, pvp and trying to keep calm after the nerfs and talent mess.
I wont get in the fact of gear looks cuz i got too much mog gear but damn sure i miss vanilla and the challenges in there...
Gulid Wars looks good tbh, blizz is a money machine that's hungy all the time, forgoten about the veterans, i bet i will be lvl90 and raid ready on this DK 10 days into the patch as we do this things as guild effort :)) so yaa, i challange u blizz...oh, U LOSE :)...oh the days, 150 wipes on LK hc and still no kill and cata came in :))) Raggy HC...27 wipes so far, gear means !@#$...tacts tacts and more tacts. Peace out :))

Stop trolling and moaning about the changes already. All changes looks good, except that hunters losing their melee weapons cos they will loose stats and also some of the stats will be used for expertise capping. But as we saw before I think blizzard will equal the classes to each other at the highest level. Monks, Frost DK's, Arms warriors and shammies seems to be good looking ones of MoP. Love this game, playing nearly from the very old times and will go on playing wow. Also very glad that there will be good graphical changes after cata.

@Goblinmoblin: Thankfully the ranged weapons are having their stats buffed majorly!

Also, it's nice to see a positive post for once! :)
