Charity Auction — Buy a Server Blade from Your Realm: Last Chance!

Charity Auction — Buy a Server Blade from Your Realm: Last Chance!

If you thought you had missed your chance to own a piece of Blizzard Entertainment history, we have good news for you: it’s not too late! Starting on January 23, we'll be releasing the last batch of retired EU server blades, which will be available for bidding on eBay. Don’t miss your final opportunity to take part in this charity auction — net proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

St. Jude is a pediatric hospital and research facility, where patients from Europe and around the world are cared for. European medical professionals benefit from the discoveries made at St. Jude in their treatment of children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Partner clinics across the globe are aided by the hospital's valuable research.

For more details, and to view the auction schedule for this final batch of server blades, please visit our information page.

So when a blade is sold, does its server get a new one, or is it taken down and its characters moved somewhere else?

Got to love the way big sharks do charity.

"hey dudes we gonna put some stuff that we dont need anymore on ebay and you are going to donate money to charity by buying it. And by the way our corporation is worth like 5 billion $ and we can pretty much secure any hospital for a 100 years, but the shareholders dont like to make sick children happy so its up to you"

Word.

@Kianake: Well this is just the way that charity auctions work, so being snarky about it serves no real purpose. :) I'm fairly sure that any major corporation would be able to float the entire sum brought in by the auction without taking too big of a financial hit (which they probably already do one way or another... CSR is important in this day and age), but this is standard procedure when it comes to old stuff. Think of it as a way to giving something to the community for actually giving to charity, whether or not it's old clothes from movies, server blades or a rear spoiler from a Formula 1 car (all of these sold in recent charity auctions). If old server blades can be given new life as home decoration while also bringing in some cash for a charity instead of just being recycled/trashed then that's a great thing, even if Blizzard could technically have just thrown away the servers and added a contribution to St. Judes to the CSR/Charity post in their annual report. It's just a much better system to do it this way.

Totally agree with Firesong. I think money from EU servers should stay in EU...we have a lot of children hospitals here... Consider it Blizzard.

@Swatpanterke: Well, its a kind of a computer, just much smaller, because some people needs it for server hosting, and they takes much lesser space, in other words, more servers on the same place.

I really think this is a good way to raise money! But I also think that the EU Server Blades should have gone to a EU Charity and not the St. Judes Childrens Hospital in the US. We habe ALOT of childrens hospitals that could of benefited from the money as well. Nonetheless its better then the blades get trashed and no one gets anything! Thank you blizzard for helping in the many ways you have!

Also People keep saying ("Why are there no "ServerName"). To help you guys solve why there might be no serverblades of your realm is that- Those are still in use. They've only auctioned the ones that are too old to keep. And what can you use it for? - As a memento>World of Warcraft History
@Narisha: This is the final wave of the charity auction for EU realms. The server blades for many realms have already been won in the previous waves of the charity auction, which is why they are no longer available.

Lots of "What is it?" questions!

Simply put, each server blade is just a PC in a special case. They're designed so you can fit lots of them together in cage. In this case, WoW runs each realm (the server side program that your game connects to) on a dedicated blade and these ones they're auctioning off are the old ones that are no longer used - as the game has grown (expansion packs etc) they've upgraded the hardware (faster/more processors, RAM) to match.

TL;DR version: each blade is the old PC used to run a specific WoW realm before they upgraded. As close to what WoW is in the real world as you can get, I guess :)

what is a server blade??
@Blightangel: In the "For more details" link on our information page, it says:

"A blade is literally a self-contained server, which collectively fits into an enclosure with other blades. The enclosure provides the power, cooling, connectivity, and management to each blade. The blade servers themselves contain only the core processing elements, making them hot-swappable. HP refers to the entire package as a BladeSystem. By consolidating and housing multiple servers in a single enclosure, energy costs are significantly reduced, cabling is drastically reduced and managing servers is simplified."
