Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

We recently released an update to the Mists of Pandaria talent tree. Since the expansion is still in development, these updates represent a snapshot of where we are at any given moment and not a final design where we step back and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved perfection. Let us not change a thing.” If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you’ve probably realized by now that we never think we’ll hit perfection, and we probably never will.

One design that we haven’t focused on much yet is the plan for various group buffs and debuffs. Some specs have their buffs in place and some do not. Rather than trying to describe each omission, we thought we’d just dump the whole design on you here. As with the rest of the expansion’s systems, we’re not even in beta yet, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.

First, some underlying design goals, so you might understand where we’re coming from. Our main goals for group buffs are:

  • Make you feel more powerful when grouped with other players.
  • Give you lots of freedom to invite whom you want. This gets to be a problem when there are too many mandatory buffs spread out among too many specs. . .
  • …But not offer too many incentives to class stack. If you can achieve every buff with, say, only three players, then there might be a tendency to fill all of the other slots with whoever is best for a particular situation. Some class stacking is inevitable at the cutting-edge level, but to some extent, the players on the cutting edge of raiding enjoy extreme min-maxing. For the rest of us, we try to make sure you can finish all of the encounters without feeling like you need a huge roster of folks waiting in the wings for their one fight.
  • We tend to be more generous to DPS specs, since groups — especially raids — already have ample reasons to bring tanks and healers.
  • We generally don’t want a DPS spec to have to switch to a different spec in the same role just to bring a different buff. An example would be a Combat rogue who has to go Assassination just for a buff. In our experience, players are less likely to switch from a ranged to a melee DPS spec just for a buff, so DPS shaman and DPS druids might bring different buffs.

And finally some notes on the categories below:

  • The list only includes what we consider “traditional” buffs, such as Prayer of Fortitude. It doesn’t include utility like being great at snaring, battle rez, knock backs, high DPS while moving, and other mechanics. Those ultimately all factor into a raid or Battleground comp as well.
  • The matrix is a little more complex than it appears. A paladin, for example, can only offer one Blessing at a time, while a warrior can only do one shout at a time. You can’t assume one character can cover every buff or debuff listed below at the same time.
  • Some of these are active (you must cast them, like Prayer of Fortitude) while others are passive. Note that totems no longer bring passive buffs as a rule.
  • You’ll see several categories consolidated or gone. Bleeds no longer made sense, since everyone who cared about bleeds already buffed themselves. Magical resistance we just removed from the game, though there are some abilities that provide magical damage reduction.
  • We are still likely to use the design that hunters, especially Beastmaster hunters, can fill in for missing buffs or debuffs by using certain pets.

Effect: +10% Stamina
Example: Power Word: Fortitude

Effect: +10% melee and ranged attack power (which will be the same value again)
Example: Battle Shout
Brought by: Any death knight, any hunter, any warrior

Spell Power
Effect: +10% spell power (there will no longer be a 6% version)
Example: Arcane Brilliance
Brought by: Any mage, any shaman, any warlock

Haste
Effect: +10% melee and ranged haste
Example: Improved Icy Talons
Brought by: Frost and Unholy death knights, any rogue, Enhancement shaman

Spell Haste
Effect: +5% spell haste
Example: Moonkin Aura
Brought by: Balance druids, Shadow priests, Elemental shaman

Critical Strike
Effect: +5% ranged, melee, and spell critical chance
Example: Leader of the Pack
Brought by: Guardian and Feral druids, any hunter, any mage

Mastery
Effect: +5 mastery
Example: This is a new category
Brought by: Windwalker monks, any paladin, any shaman

Debuffs

Weakened Armor
Effect: -12% armor
Example: Sunder Armor
Brought by: Any druid, any rogue, any warrior

Physical Vulnerability
Effect: +4% physical damage taken
Example: Brittle Bones
Brought by: Frost and Unholy death knights, Retribution paladins, Arms and Fury warriors

Magic Vulnerability
Effect: +8% spell damage taken
Example: Curse of the Elements
Brought by: Any rogue, any warlock

Weakened Blows
Effect: -10% physical damage done
Example: Previously Demoralizing Shout; now Thunder Clap
Brought by: Blood death knight, Feral and Guardian druid, Brewmaster monk, Protection or Retribution paladin, any warrior (any tank)

Slow Casting
Effect: -30% casting speed
Example: Mind-numbing Poison
Brought by: Any death knight, any rogue, any warlock

Mortal Wounds
Effect: -25% healing received
Example: Mortal Strike
Brought by: Arms or Fury warrior, any rogue, any hunter

Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street is the lead systems designer for World of Warcraft. He was unsuccessful in convincing the rest of the class team to change Arms warrior mastery to decreased falling damage taken.

I'm really looking forward for some pandas BBQ as a fire mage. But I'm also glad that I've started playing at least on TBC to know what WoW really was. (25 man raiding... farming mats for resist gear to do the boss...dying 2 months on archimond/ lady /keal... killing doomlord and doomwalker, making the right class setup.. being inspected in T6 gear as something special...) looks like never be the same but still the best :)

Taking away Melee weps for hunters? well in that case make Agi that little bit stronger? I'm loosing 300+agi because you want ranged to be ranged only. Damn bliz i hope you know what you're doing...

And whats with this talent f*ck up? Balancing, sure, fair enough, but you're taking away class uniqueness! That's not right! the whole reason i became i hunter is because i looked at the details and saw a kick-!@# talent tree where you can be almost anything you want. But now all i see is a f*cked up list of buttons to click that do exactly the same as anybody else. Good job. Ima go make a pally.

YEY!Give Rogues buffs now,cause sapping and stunning for 2 minutes isn't enough.YEY!Give locks a stamina buff,cause going around with 186k hp aint enough to kill you in a bg...Yey!Give all of the new "balanced"-my a*s buffs to all the specs of the paladins,cause running bubbled and hitting you to death aint enough.Yey!Give a HASTE buff to SHAMANS,cause ench shamies dont kill you fast enough it seems....5 seconds is much....Balance this,balance that.Blizz,you failed yet once more.Trying to rip off other games like KONAN and Guild wars.Loved the new areas and all,but why mix the buffs up?Buff is what makes a class needed.In my guild we already made a raiding group...5 of us made druids and the priests lvled paladins instead.So yea,only our lock will remain the same....

.... I really wonder blizzard, Don't you guys see that you are trying to make up the balance issues by just giving identical spells and buffs to other classes instead of trying to improve their own spells and buffs. You are completely ruining the fun of playing a certain class, Ofcourse WoW should be balanced but just as important is that classes should be unique.
Also referring more to the Spell/Talent tree changes like giving every class tons of selfheals but I had to finally throw it out after reading this because it's just one of those extra things that ruin the game.

I think people are overacting about the changes, saying the game is being dumbed down, OMG NERFFFFF, Blizz is ruining the game for me, and so on... Sure, the game will be somewhat easier, but Normal, if not HC raids and pvp will still be entertaining, if not difficult. I believe the new game mechanics and systems will only improve the game experience.

Many are complaining about the nerf of shamans, yes, shamans are being nerfed, but only to the point where the raid are'nt dependant on having one. Shamans are still doing damage and healing.

@Aristokres: This is a fair point but at the same time the game is being balanced to the point that some classes are becoming less and less unique, i'm expecting to see in the future that other classes get pets and minions, and that all classes have healing spells (not the talent)
We are all angry because though blizzard have done a great job balancing, it is too great of a job... they have taken away 50%+ of the uniqueness of the game and as far as i can tell it will cost them many a dorrah.

would love to see a buff mainly for a dps spec which would contribute to stamina strength agility and haste all at the same time rather than having 2-3 different buffs

Why are you getting rid of magic resistance? WoW is already /faceroll for the older players and this will just add to it. I love stacking resistance to stunt casters in pvp as well as for the fact that it's just cool to know you have high resistance. I mean every other game including magic has resistances of some form, but apparently not WoW...

@Kawake: well, the good news is, more nd more ppl are going to quit, so the gm's have more time to help us, the bad news is, blizz fcks it up so damnd !@#$ty they wont be able to make all the players who are staying have all the fun they had cus most ppl will quit and so will all the dungeons/raiding go lower, cus there is a lack of ppl who are willing to do it, and actually have the brains to do it(these are always, evrywere and evrytime)

I do agree with the other comments though that some of your design choices are seemingly aimed at serioulsy dumbing the game down.. And I too think that new players who try it will only leave after a short time subbing.. while many long term players will leave.. You said in a previous post that you dont want to change the game too drasticaly...I think you should heed that.. I have never known anyone to start playing a well established MMO and keep playing it.. they try it and leave [generally], sure some will stay but not a very high percentage.. I think Bliz should be happy with the 10million + subs they have and keep those people subbing.. Dont make drastic changes.. I guess its too late for some changes and MOP.. But please quit messing up things that work.. I have been playing Beta for quite a few weeks and have played several classes and sure the new spells look pretty cool, and there are some intresting new changes.. But there is some seriously WTF!!! changes as well.. I really hope you listen to peoples views and act accordingly.. I still think its good that you are offering some new classes Buffs or the ability to Debuff... But also please heed the warnings about making WoW too generic.. too dumbed down.. I am really not liking the way rogues are looking at the moment and warlocks are not looking too much better.. maybe even just as bad.. sure they have some awesome damage 'at the moment', but its more their spells and talents I am looking at and commenting on.. Priests , Disco in particular, are looking not too bad.. And mages are looking ok too.. I am aware that melee haven't had their overhaul as of yet..at least not that I am aware of.. But still.. I am really hoping the design you have in store for rogues by release is 'nothing' like it is now.. You guys really need to quit with hand holding already.. we dont need it at end game.. You should have quests of something that teach you use or invole certain spells / abilities that you do as and when you learn them.. I am all to aware of the fact that many people nowadays can start to play wow and ding the level cap without knowing how to play their class properly.. Oh and fyi I dont think the whole 'Copy n paste' from Elitist Jerks thing is as bad as some people make out.. if you just look at your talents and read them you can pretty much see which ones will be best..At least you can with the classes I play.. and after cutting the amount of talent points down in Cata it is pretty hard to get your specc wrong.. after all you only have a few points to put in other trees.. Sure there are a few 'put where u want' points, but again its common sense.. again I am only saying this relevant to the classes I play.. maybe some classes do have it bad I dont know.. But maybe they should have been changed and not all classes..

On the Buff subject.. Yeh it look good.. I think it needs alittle tweeking.. look a little closer as to which class brings which buff.. But sounds great.. Rogues getting to bring buffs other than Sub + Crit buff Whoot! I'm happy!

Yeah give Enh shaman more useless Haste so that in combination with Flurry we wont have to touch the enemy with weapons anymore, the speed will be sooooooo amazing that they will just die when we look down upon them. gz yet again blizz

I agree with this tbh, Ive played a shaman since vanilla, and we were always the "guy with the totems" now the only thing we actually have that makes us shamans is Ankh...Totems are what makes a shaman a shaman....why take them away?..

Firstly I like the new buff system, My main is a combat rogue and he really needs a buff.
Please Please However keep our talent trees a little complex with the need for a class understanding at least at a raider level.
I understand that you need lots of new recruits, BUT most of the people who play WoW are the old dungeons and dragons generation and read Tolkien. We are addicted to the difficuilty and contsent striving for the next challenge or the next epic piece of loot. I really believe if you Dumb down the game too much you will lose may of us addicts and replace us in the very short term with children who have no way of paying ongoing subscribstion as we do.
In general the panda expansion looks stunning and i am hoping to encapsulate myself in it when it is released.

This is just terrible, its like you are trying to make the game more noob friendly aka dumbing it down. That is not what you want out of a game, tje complexity of wow is what made it shine and since all these talent cuts level cuts gearing just the majoirity of things that used to take TIME and EFFORT you have lost many subscribers. Do yourselves a favor and start creating the game to keep the long term subscribers not to bring newbies to the game
