Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

We recently released an update to the Mists of Pandaria talent tree. Since the expansion is still in development, these updates represent a snapshot of where we are at any given moment and not a final design where we step back and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved perfection. Let us not change a thing.” If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you’ve probably realized by now that we never think we’ll hit perfection, and we probably never will.

One design that we haven’t focused on much yet is the plan for various group buffs and debuffs. Some specs have their buffs in place and some do not. Rather than trying to describe each omission, we thought we’d just dump the whole design on you here. As with the rest of the expansion’s systems, we’re not even in beta yet, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.

First, some underlying design goals, so you might understand where we’re coming from. Our main goals for group buffs are:

  • Make you feel more powerful when grouped with other players.
  • Give you lots of freedom to invite whom you want. This gets to be a problem when there are too many mandatory buffs spread out among too many specs. . .
  • …But not offer too many incentives to class stack. If you can achieve every buff with, say, only three players, then there might be a tendency to fill all of the other slots with whoever is best for a particular situation. Some class stacking is inevitable at the cutting-edge level, but to some extent, the players on the cutting edge of raiding enjoy extreme min-maxing. For the rest of us, we try to make sure you can finish all of the encounters without feeling like you need a huge roster of folks waiting in the wings for their one fight.
  • We tend to be more generous to DPS specs, since groups — especially raids — already have ample reasons to bring tanks and healers.
  • We generally don’t want a DPS spec to have to switch to a different spec in the same role just to bring a different buff. An example would be a Combat rogue who has to go Assassination just for a buff. In our experience, players are less likely to switch from a ranged to a melee DPS spec just for a buff, so DPS shaman and DPS druids might bring different buffs.

And finally some notes on the categories below:

  • The list only includes what we consider “traditional” buffs, such as Prayer of Fortitude. It doesn’t include utility like being great at snaring, battle rez, knock backs, high DPS while moving, and other mechanics. Those ultimately all factor into a raid or Battleground comp as well.
  • The matrix is a little more complex than it appears. A paladin, for example, can only offer one Blessing at a time, while a warrior can only do one shout at a time. You can’t assume one character can cover every buff or debuff listed below at the same time.
  • Some of these are active (you must cast them, like Prayer of Fortitude) while others are passive. Note that totems no longer bring passive buffs as a rule.
  • You’ll see several categories consolidated or gone. Bleeds no longer made sense, since everyone who cared about bleeds already buffed themselves. Magical resistance we just removed from the game, though there are some abilities that provide magical damage reduction.
  • We are still likely to use the design that hunters, especially Beastmaster hunters, can fill in for missing buffs or debuffs by using certain pets.

As always, we’d love to get your feedback on this design.

I have read a lot of comments in here and all i can say is: "Where is that time of WoW that one could excell over the rest?" I mean, i login to WoW and see a zillion people with same gear, i ask myself why?, becouse it is to DAMN easy to achieve that nowadays. I read the concept above and i think again, was it not easy enough allready? 90% of the LFR people DO NOT BELONG IN END GAMING CONTENT!! But with all the "make it more easy" ideas, i really do not know what the minimum age for playing this game should be. What is there ingame to achieve nowadays that makes you proud of achieving? nothing!!! I am gonna have a look at the next expansion and if its gonna be the way i think it is going to be, then it wil be my last expansion.

Healing priests seem to be getting looked over bringing just one buff or debuff while after a quick glance most other classes get to bring 2 buffs or debuffs!

Blizzard, please stop making the game so simple and boring. Make it like that for low level's. I'm not one of those people who are like "Vanilla was the best ever i hate blizzard for changing it" I like wow as it is in catyclysm. Some major things that are changing that quite clearly no one agree's with are the talent system and the buffs so please change it.

@Hellji: Yes. They are the future players of this game so it's actually kind of smart to attract them to the game and maybe even future releases as well. But I understand what you mean. I don't find WoW enjoyable anymore and I don't think that anything Blizzard throws at me will change that, except for maybe an updated graphics engine.

@Arkhios: Well, this is a forum. If people are going to tell me I have to stop playing a game because I post an opinion on a forum then that's just warped. He can insert objects up his butt all he likes as far as I'm concerned, I'll not give him the pleasure. He doesn't have to come to a forum and read posts. What I AM interested in is adding my opinion and ideas so that they have a chance of influencing future game direction.

It seems to me that a lot of the tug of war between people complaining is actually between people who prefer RPGs and people who prefer arcade games. I think that maybe the arcade lot have swayed WoW from being an RPG, and now it's more of an MMOarcade game in some senses. I don't want to detract from the massive achievement of everyone involved in making it brilliant, but it's not possible to make everyone happy, though perhaps we have come as close as we can without combining an arcade game and an RPG as separate optional aspects of the game. I'm not convinced that there is really a hardcore/casual divide, I think maybe it's RPG/arcade. Or maybe they are both valid classifications. All I know is that after 4 years of playing (which is unbelievable) I don't feel like exploring any more. I don't get a thrill. Achievements are devalued, etc so there's no point in trying to achieve things. I think the shared buffs fall into this category. They just sound so 'meh'... Oromis sounds like he has a great idea, I'm sure the !@# has considered it, but do all buffs really have to be about stats? Bloodlust/heroism was a great buff because it was different, even if it was about stats. People got excited about getting a shammy in their group because that was a key part. Now I don't think people even notice, and rarely seem to ask for heroism. Don't know what that signifies. Maybe I'm just jaded and played too long.

Who the hell cares if some classes have similar buffs? When you think about this logically, this is a game meant for fun. Players have moaned about lack of invites to raids since vanilla and this solves it. Stop getting caught on your high horse and lets enjoy our classes without constantly moaning. Bottom line is, players are NEVER happy. So I don't care whether I share buffs with two other classes, all I care about is enjoying my class.

In my opinion, each class/spec should have their own one thing that only they can bring to the raid. Not major things though, only minor. Like it was before, say vanilla/burning crusade, only tuned down.

Take Blessing of Might. Only paladins can buff it, no one else, but it only provides 5 % attack power and only a tiny bit of mp5. Arcane intellect - Only mage can have the effect, but it only grants 5 % spell power. Priest are the only ones who can do stamina, though it's Only 5 %.

Now comes the issue with what to give the other classes? Give them shorter duration buffs with a cooldown, but more powerful. For example; Hunters can have a long normal buff that provides 5 % haste, Shamans can have bloodlust that provides 20 % haste for 10/15 seconds. Paladins have Blessing of might that provides 5 % attack power, rogues can have a short duration buff that provides 20/30ish % attack power for 10/15 seconds. That way, no class will be required to do casual raiding, but everyone brings something unique. If you want to do hardcore raiding and minmaxing, then you need to brings as many different classes as possible.

(Numbers are just examples - I am no wowmathcrafter)

it would add to the fun in the game and make it a bit harder.
it seems to me tho that exactly "making it harder" is what blizz seems to avoid. it's good when a game is easy to understand but it takes away the fun for the expirienced players. it's like Magic the gathering getting turned into Yu-gi-oh. decide yourself if that's a bad thing.

I can understand completely what they are trying to do here. Eliminate the need for one particular class/buff so that more classes can fulfil what ever role is needed in the raid. This is great news for the more casual player as it gives them more opportunity to get involved, rather than been rejected for not been able to provide the group with a certain buff or not having the right spec (To provide with the buffs). On the other hand i can see where you more hardcore players like having that distinction between classes/specs, to provide you with the best possible set off buffs (and optimal dmg with these buffs) for a particular boss for example. But ultimately is it really going to make a massive difference? I don't think it will. At the end of the day its a buff. The classes still have their differences. Some of you are talking like Hunters are going to be running around throwing fireballs...! Personally i'll wait for MoP and see what difference it will actually make. For casual gamers i'll say little to none. For hardcore... Slight.

1 buff for a mage and 4 for a warlock. And the mage one has long been shared around to other classes. I remember when I levelled my enhancement shammy, cos everyone was mad keen on them. By the time I levelled it the buffs were shared by other classes and there was no need for an enhancement shammy any more. Now it doesn't seem to matter too much what class you play, there's little differentiation. Just variations on a theme. Levelling classes is like collecting pets, you do it for completeness and it doesn't signify an achievement any more. I log on and wonder what to play, and nothing reaches out and grabs me, they're all the same. Log a healer or tank if you want no queue, or a dps if you feel they've been left out. It's feeling more and more like an arcade game. And I <3 RPGs...

this is absolutely ridiculous.. buffs are part of a class, and it's just a bonus. Blizzard are still just making the game less and less interesting, what is it talent trees gone so instead you choose 6 abilities or something? such a joke, and they should be ashamed of how they are destroying this game and making it only for noobs

After reading the all of the above, i still feel as though there is little uniquness to the classes, different classes have the same buffs, which begins to defeat the point of taking a mixed class group, or raid. All im saying is maybe thing about looking at the buffs and debuffs again, maybe half them for each class? but make them stack so its viable to take the classes that can do the same debuff / buff. A clear one is druids leader of the pack, this was massively unique in like vanilla and tbc if memory serves me right, and now hunters AND mages can do it!? it defeats the reason to take a feral druid? because their Mark of the wild is no longer unique either. And now battle shout is the same as trueshot aura? warriors bring nothing to a group if there are priests and hunters there, all im saying is maybe look at the buffs and debuffs and like i said early halve them? so maybe raid leader will think "Ohh we only have a 5% increase in spell power.... maybe its viable to bring a mage for more dps?" i feel the lines between classes are being blurred most indefinately, especially over the buffs and debuffs.

i scroll down and see moan after moan after moan......it doesnt matter what you say on here either good or bad, you aint a dev so your opinion dont count for nothing.
However, look at it this way - Every expansion so far has had good and bad points...... regardless, players moan for a week and then just carry on as they did before. If the end result is really that bad find a new game to play. Could u imagine if there had been no expansions whatsoever and we had still been playing vanilla, peeps would have moaned then too and still be moaning now.

Blizz do what u want to the game....if its crap ima just stop playing.
