Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

We recently released an update to the Mists of Pandaria talent tree. Since the expansion is still in development, these updates represent a snapshot of where we are at any given moment and not a final design where we step back and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved perfection. Let us not change a thing.” If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you’ve probably realized by now that we never think we’ll hit perfection, and we probably never will.

One design that we haven’t focused on much yet is the plan for various group buffs and debuffs. Some specs have their buffs in place and some do not. Rather than trying to describe each omission, we thought we’d just dump the whole design on you here. As with the rest of the expansion’s systems, we’re not even in beta yet, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.

First, some underlying design goals, so you might understand where we’re coming from. Our main goals for group buffs are:

  • Make you feel more powerful when grouped with other players.
  • Give you lots of freedom to invite whom you want. This gets to be a problem when there are too many mandatory buffs spread out among too many specs. . .
  • …But not offer too many incentives to class stack. If you can achieve every buff with, say, only three players, then there might be a tendency to fill all of the other slots with whoever is best for a particular situation. Some class stacking is inevitable at the cutting-edge level, but to some extent, the players on the cutting edge of raiding enjoy extreme min-maxing. For the rest of us, we try to make sure you can finish all of the encounters without feeling like you need a huge roster of folks waiting in the wings for their one fight.
  • We tend to be more generous to DPS specs, since groups — especially raids — already have ample reasons to bring tanks and healers.
  • We generally don’t want a DPS spec to have to switch to a different spec in the same role just to bring a different buff. An example would be a Combat rogue who has to go Assassination just for a buff. In our experience, players are less likely to switch from a ranged to a melee DPS spec just for a buff, so DPS shaman and DPS druids might bring different buffs.

And finally some notes on the categories below:

  • The list only includes what we consider “traditional” buffs, such as Prayer of Fortitude. It doesn’t include utility like being great at snaring, battle rez, knock backs, high DPS while moving, and other mechanics. Those ultimately all factor into a raid or Battleground comp as well.
  • The matrix is a little more complex than it appears. A paladin, for example, can only offer one Blessing at a time, while a warrior can only do one shout at a time. You can’t assume one character can cover every buff or debuff listed below at the same time.
  • Some of these are active (you must cast them, like Prayer of Fortitude) while others are passive. Note that totems no longer bring passive buffs as a rule.
  • You’ll see several categories consolidated or gone. Bleeds no longer made sense, since everyone who cared about bleeds already buffed themselves. Magical resistance we just removed from the game, though there are some abilities that provide magical damage reduction.
  • We are still likely to use the design that hunters, especially Beastmaster hunters, can fill in for missing buffs or debuffs by using certain pets.

As always, we’d love to get your feedback on this design.

@Iniel: yepp, if you don't like it stop playing. It's useless to cry here because we aren't on dev team. And MoP isn't even out yet so why yell and cry now. Let's wait the expansion to come out, test it for a while and start nerd rage then when we actually have some experience about the changes!!!!.

My opinion : I think their needs to be more focus on magic for magic based characters and more focus on melee n raged moves for these types of characters, why make everyone magic? Each class needs to feel unique... Also more different types of armor and weapons too many people have the same stuff everyone looks similar....Asherons call had the perfect system :)

"Give you lots of freedom to invite whom you want. This gets to be a problem when there are too many mandatory buffs spread out among too many specs. . ."

Well, as you know we HoT healers tends to love the 5% spell haste, and sort our gear around just that. Now that you remove the spell haste from resto shaman and let only 3 dps specs give this, this is gong to hurt our healing a lot? Do you want us to build a 10 man raid around these 3 dps classes?

How is thes consistent with the intention with the upcomming changes?

@Ewylina: Wait what? How do you calculate that you need to build your raidroster around 3 DPS classes, you need just 1 of them obviously. What are the odds you are going raiding without either a Frost and Unholy death knight, any rogue or an Enhancement shaman?

Pls give all thinhs a chance here , its still a long walk untill MoP hits us , btw is it posseble to have all proff like you wanna build the talend tree's ? It whoud be a greath idea to remove that long and boring level points system of all proff . Like you dit to the arms lev system , instead of this do like the talend system that y are building on , every 15 lev an training then you can build for example all proff untill the next 15 lev . Lets say for tailorling id you are lev 15 you can build all cloth's for lev 15 untill next training for lev 30 ;)

Hmmz why not let us all start out at level 90 and be done with it? You are removing every complex part of the game bit by bit so that it won't even be a challenge to 5 year olds anymore.

Ok so magic resistance has gone the way of ARP, I like how thy are making the game simpler and simpler. Nothing but good can come out of this. I really hated having to find / make frost resist items for feral tanks for Cyndragosa fight anyway... (polar vest / boots / cord)

I'd like to see the new buff/debuff system in action. And the + mastery looks nice too, but how about changing it to +10% mastery? :) That would provide better benefit to heavy mastery characters and make players want to stack at least some mastery over the 5 points (lets say +10% OR +5 if the 10% < 5 ?)

Don't know if this would work but maybe it might.
Instead of spreading buffs about over everyone and making say 3 classes have the same buff, have classes keep their minor buffs like 5% haste on a boomkin for example and maybe do like 4 more Guild Levels where as we can cast the major buffs raid wide but only in a raid. Example:-

Guild Level 26 - Raid Wide: Fortitude, Grants the Whole raid +10% Stamina, cannot be used in Battle Grounds, Arenas, 5 mans, 5 man HC's or LFR.

Guild Level 27 - Raid Wide: Stats, Grants the Whole Raid +5% to all stats, Cannot be use in Battle Grounds, Arenas, 5 mans, 5 man HC's or LFR

and so on. I Think this would allow for small groups of raiders to be able to raid, like we has last week raiding, Where our Paladin didn't turn up our priest was ill and our mage went out. we were stuck with hunters and rogue filling places.

Like i say it's just an idea, not saying its a good one, just an idea.
Rather than reworking the whole who gets what buff System, just thought this might make it easier.

@Respiti: As he said, Cannot be used in Battle Grounds, arenas and FIVE MAN PVE... -.- Its just to stop people missing out for only having certain classes. To have all the buffs in PVP would be silly, but then again if everyone has it then it would be equal, then useless cause your still equal.

@Chandak: Its a great idea but still needs some adjustments for players in pvp maby make the guilds chose between pve and pvp guild and that they get different buffs/debuffs so they can maximize there choise.

Interesting, I have some reservations about the buff system bringing a generic feel to the mix, however most players won't even notice the change a few months in. Perhaps buff mechanics will suffer as they'll affect the dynamics of raid optimization. Simply because there won't be one. With the spread of classes to buffs ratio every 25 man raid could easily optimize...whilst I know this is the aim of GC, I believe this simplicity may not be happily accepted. I'd like to address anyone out there saying

@Iasul "I agree. But I'm afraid this is necessary as the human race itself is dumbing down and they demand simplicity, which makes me sadder."

Quite Ironic there Iasul, your taking a blatantly simple approach on simplicity, condemning 6 billion people+ to the stupid bin, Speak for yourself mate>.> anything along these lines is not a constructive way of thought and whilst frustration at change is only natural, try to channel that frustration into some sort of constructive criticism. The new buffs and talents will require a beta test to fully asses their validity. On the subject of talents and simplicity, Blizzard will be removing many of the "Mandatory talents" from specs, what's the point of for example not taking stormstrike in the enhancement tree? Your DPS will suffer greatly... So why's it even an option? THAT is the simplicity that I'm talking about. Check this link to a video by Scchirp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J88emv0MFcM&feature=BFa&list=UUjlPM2gDZCybO9jJK4jhl9g&lf=plcp

This vid helped clear alot up for me at any rate.

personally, i like the new changes, because i have a character of every class which i play quite thoroughly, and to see that each one has a buff is a nice change. i like that hunters get a few buffs/debuffs and think that it will be helpful in dungeons and LFR, not to mention boosting other people which i do alot, just to lend a helping hand. i don't see what all the fuss is about. if i am honest though, i would prefer to see more classes with some form of Battle Ressurection, because from what i can remember only 3 classes have them. druid, death knight and a warlock (soulstone). the BR's in cataclysm have been useful with bosses in both Dungeons and LFR.

i have a mad idea for hunters, what if you could play as the pet and put the hunter on assist mode it could give hunters a role of tank or melee dps ye might need to add a res incase the hunter dies while you are controling your pet, you could even have a pet healer but maybe thats too mad, at different phases of the fight you may change from your pet to the hunters control, it will be truely be a hybird class

I'm very sad to see that the hunter still has no REAL value on raids. Yes, we can supply missing buffs, IF needed, and we can bring some utility stuff not really necessary to the fight.
Hunters will ofcourse get to raid, but i see a real possibility that we will be brought in on certain fights for the ocacional CC, or perhaps run speed. Unless we get som real goodies later, we are still only capable of one thing. DPS.
Why not introduce some additional Hero/Bloodlust like abilities that will make the true dps classes more wanted ?
Off the top of my head...
- Short damage imunity to the group
- Hunter pet off tanking. REAL control over the pet this time
- Group run speed for a short time
- "Cast on the go" for 30 sec.
- Resurection of a fellow player to replace pet, with extra abilities. (i would love to res the tank as my pet)

Lots of other fun stuff that can be done, please give the raid leader a reason to bring DPS
