Mists of Pandaria Buff and Debuff Design

We recently released an update to the Mists of Pandaria talent tree. Since the expansion is still in development, these updates represent a snapshot of where we are at any given moment and not a final design where we step back and say “Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved perfection. Let us not change a thing.” If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you’ve probably realized by now that we never think we’ll hit perfection, and we probably never will.
One design that we haven’t focused on much yet is the plan for various group buffs and debuffs. Some specs have their buffs in place and some do not. Rather than trying to describe each omission, we thought we’d just dump the whole design on you here. As with the rest of the expansion’s systems, we’re not even in beta yet, so there’s plenty of time for things to change.
First, some underlying design goals, so you might understand where we’re coming from. Our main goals for group buffs are:
- Make you feel more powerful when grouped with other players.
- Give you lots of freedom to invite whom you want. This gets to be a problem when there are too many mandatory buffs spread out among too many specs. . .
- …But not offer too many incentives to class stack. If you can achieve every buff with, say, only three players, then there might be a tendency to fill all of the other slots with whoever is best for a particular situation. Some class stacking is inevitable at the cutting-edge level, but to some extent, the players on the cutting edge of raiding enjoy extreme min-maxing. For the rest of us, we try to make sure you can finish all of the encounters without feeling like you need a huge roster of folks waiting in the wings for their one fight.
- We tend to be more generous to DPS specs, since groups — especially raids — already have ample reasons to bring tanks and healers.
- We generally don’t want a DPS spec to have to switch to a different spec in the same role just to bring a different buff. An example would be a Combat rogue who has to go Assassination just for a buff. In our experience, players are less likely to switch from a ranged to a melee DPS spec just for a buff, so DPS shaman and DPS druids might bring different buffs.
And finally some notes on the categories below:
- The list only includes what we consider “traditional” buffs, such as Prayer of Fortitude. It doesn’t include utility like being great at snaring, battle rez, knock backs, high DPS while moving, and other mechanics. Those ultimately all factor into a raid or Battleground comp as well.
- The matrix is a little more complex than it appears. A paladin, for example, can only offer one Blessing at a time, while a warrior can only do one shout at a time. You can’t assume one character can cover every buff or debuff listed below at the same time.
- Some of these are active (you must cast them, like Prayer of Fortitude) while others are passive. Note that totems no longer bring passive buffs as a rule.
- You’ll see several categories consolidated or gone. Bleeds no longer made sense, since everyone who cared about bleeds already buffed themselves. Magical resistance we just removed from the game, though there are some abilities that provide magical damage reduction.
- We are still likely to use the design that hunters, especially Beastmaster hunters, can fill in for missing buffs or debuffs by using certain pets.
As always, we’d love to get your feedback on this design.

Your could have just said ''stop complaining'' instead of that incoherant ramble. Let people voice their opinions so we can turn round to Blizzard and say ''I told you so'' when they lose their long-term subscribers.
Anachronos
That said all of us do have a right to express our opinions and while change is natural and to be encouraged if it makes things better change purely for the sake of change is tiresome. I do believe a certain crab made a post about this very point. I'm not sure how to view the constant tinkering with talents in this context!
On my enhance shammy I like the uniqueness of the totem mechanic and the range of buffs we bring. Kind of sad that some of that seems to go away with the current proposals but we do seem to get mastery and spell power buffs in compensation.

Better to complain before the new expansion come's out, rather than wait to complain. Too late then, init.

As for asking our opinion, why do you bother, you do not listen. Let's see, Rogue's are ridiculously, stupidly overpowered, and the poor, poor Hunter has had his Melee ability seriously flawed, and as for Aimed Shot... Have you tried using Aimed Shot in a Battleground, or PvP, i think not. The time it take's to charge it up, the Hunter is DEAD !!!
With abilities like Charge and other speed increase's, 3 second's is a life time. And bring back "Volley"
If you ask for our opinion, then you should listen. Otherwise, carrying on breaking what is fixed, and supe up what does not need it.
Ranting session over, and yes, i like Hunter's. So, if using a Bow is all they can do, and Melee is non exixtant for a Hunter, then let the Hunter use his Bow at short to Melee range.

why do you say you'd love to get feedback while you dont even tend to respond on it properly( you most likely wont even read this)
ever since Wotlk high-end content ppl complain about the game, especially lately there are thousands of posts and hundreds of topics about the fact the game is getting just ridiculously easy that it cannot be unnoticed anymore and blizz cannot ignore this anymore.
I understand that a game like this is impossible to balance but atm its way off both pve and pvp. dungeons, raids, bg,arena, world pvp, questing,proffesions... all a joke atm compared to vanilla and tbc.
I could pretty much write a book about this but ill keep it short.
Make WoW more like TBC style. make the game balanced so its fun for both hardcore and casual players, and again i know its impossible to balance the game but atm this game is pretty much designed for 12 year old casual players.

PVE has been dumbed down to the point where I can already manage Heroic-mode encounters with half RF and PVP gear with no professions or shoulder enchant. I would have been laughed at for attempting such a thing in Icecrown heroics. I have only just changed guilds to one capable of heroic modes (our realm really is in need of a merge or influx of transfers!). But last night I stepped into Ultraxion Heroic and held my own as 1 of only 2 healers and got him to 5% (expecting to get my first kill tonight)
Generally speaking the long-term subscribers (WHO HAVE PAID THE MOST MONEY TO BLIZZARD AND SHOULD THEREFORE HAVE MORE CLOUT!) are the ones who prefer the complexity of the game and who will lose interest and eventually stop playing altogether. Blizzard obviously see them as a guaranteed revenue stream and therefore aim to please the new players in an attempt to line their already uber guild coffers.
Can't wait to spend all of 3 minutes deciding how to spec in MoP and falling asleep while spamming AE heals as discipline, a once unique and dedicated tank-healing spec!
Scarshield Legion
Blizz have made it require little to no skill and even on my terribly low population, neglected realm, Scarshield Legion, you have idiots running round in pretty good gear and it is impossible to tell who is worth inviting to a raid and who just idled through raid-finder.
This game will die a horrible death due to losing the players cabable of independant thought, that enjoy challenges, and that teach the new players how to play better. blizz will have to keep numbing down the complexity of the game till it becomes another generic cartoon game able to be played with an xbox controller!

They're working VERY HARD to make it as non-challenging as possible, which is why people who enjoy the semi-hardcore/hardcore part of the game are filing complains - It won't exist anymore.
Knowing full well the only PVE addition to come in Pandaria is 3 bosses I look forward to see how they will tackle the entertainment factor. My strong belief is hot up an old 40man, make it a 10/5 man and give free epics to people who hardly managed to survive in the barrens against raptors as a prot paladin.
