Bringing Achievements to the Account Level

We recently added account-level changes to achievements in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and there’s still a lot of work left before we’re done. The plan here is to illustrate the intent behind our design, which should in turn help you figure out the answers to many of your questions.
Overall, we never want you to play Character A instead of Character B because of achievement concerns. If Character A had the Violet Proto-Drake, then you might not play Character B. If Character A was only one holiday away from the Violet Proto-Drake, then you may not play Character B. If Character A had completed most of the raid achievements from Dragon Soul, you may not want to bring Character B for one fight and miss out on the achievement. Having alts is cool and working on achievements is cool, but we don’t want the two systems to work against each other.
This goal is paramount and drives everything else. If we allowed you to earn extra achievement points from completing an achievement on two different characters, then you might only want to play the character with the most points and you’d feel like you had to grind through all the achievements with every alt, thus defeating the purpose of having account-level achievements.
Most achievements are account-wide
This means you only earn the points once. If you have earned an achievement on one character, you can see it on all your characters. However, and this is important, you will still see the achievement toast (the pop-up notification) if a second or subsequent character completes the achievement. We think it’s still important to recognize milestones like reaching level 80, maxing out a profession, or killing a raid boss for the first time. It's fun to have everyone congratulate you when you get the toast. Nonetheless, this will just be a new character of yours completing the achievement that you’ve already earned on your account. You won’t double up on points.
Most criteria are not account-wide
If you start an achievement on one character, you can't then finish the achievement on another (there are exceptions, so please keep reading). We didn't think it made sense for one character to get level 60 and another to get level 20 and then see the "level 80" achievement toast. If you start to explore Thousand Needles on one character, you’ll probably want to finish that achievement on the same character.
Some achievements are "meta achievements."
These are achievements that require you to get other specific achievements. An infamous example is "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been." These achievements generally ARE account-wide. If one character earned Noble Gardener and another character earned The Flame Warden, then your account would get Long Strange Trip. (Otherwise it would be weird: it would look as if you had the sub-achievements, but you wouldn't have the meta-achievement). Even though you need Explore Thousand Needles on one character, all of your characters can contribute to Explore Kalimdor.
A very few achievements are account-only.
There are two categories of account-only achievements. One is achievements that are not possible to earn on one character. If we made an achievement to level every class to level 90, it would be account-only. (I'm not sure we will, but it's a good example.) The other category are achievements that are just brutal to complete on one character (and you’d never want to do for multiples), such as 2500 daily quests or 250K honorable kills. In these cases, the cumulative work of all your characters on those criteria will count.
Our intent is that any rewards granted from achievements (pets, mounts, titles, and tabards) will be shared at the account level.
I'm not going to promise this yet, because a lot of magic has to happen for that to work, but it's our intent. We have discussed having a character level requirement for some rewards, so that your level-2 gnome couldn’t walk around with the "Defender of a Shattered World" title just because your level-90 shaman earned it. If the gnome made it to level 80, though, you could proudly show off your title. You also won’t be able to use a faction-specific pet, mount, or title on the wrong faction. The achievement wouldn’t go away -- you just wouldn’t be able to show it off on that character. There are probably additional exceptions and details we’ll find as we dig deeper into the system.
This is the kind of system that will evolve over time, and we don’t think this has to be the way achievements work forever. As beta players start experimenting with it and offering feedback, I am certain that we will end up making even more changes.

Well how wrong i was, still can't buy relevant stuff as even though the achievement is there on my alts because they themselves haven't done the achievement it can't be bought and this is going to make me play my alts more, wrong, get it sorted blizz, whats the point in doing half a job, either implement it correctly or scrap it.

tbh Blizz you are all wrong. We LOVEDS doing everything for each character. what else would we do when having reached max lvl and best gear. The we do raids, bg, daylies, for the achievments.
NOW I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY ANY OF MY ALTS UNTILL I GOTTEN ALL ACHIEVEMENTS ON MY MAIN AGAIN!!
Cos how lame is it when you are checking your achievements on your main and you see in the list: Pethoria: achieved by Alexandar ( an alt) ON MY MAIN!!
Or, when you logon even to a brand new made character, you asap get ALL achievements you ever accomplished with any of your characters, including the mount, pet or anything neededx for that achievments. even titles... why would I still want to play my alts if I dont have to do !@#$ on them to regain my titles and achievments, mounts or pets... cos I allready got them???
Why would I even bother to redo any of those so fun quests you worked so hard for to make, like the singing sunflower quest with any alt?? ITS A WASTE OF TIME NOW!! Cos I allready got the companion with my main. So when I complete it with an alt I do get the companion but it states its allready known so I can do nothing more but sell it to a vendor or delete it.
oh yeah going account bound on pets mounts and achievements REALLY gave me more will to play my many alts..... NOT!!!!
What were you thinking?

I've read a lot of you guys's posts about how this will melt all your alts together and I can see your point.
From my point of view this is great. Ever since achievements came out, I've had personal contests with my friends about getting the most points. We didn't care about which achievements gave the points, only how many we had. Later in wow I changed main, but he didn't which meant that I had to start from scratch. This chance completely put me off achievement hunting, which resulted in me not joining a lot of stuff my friends were doing, since I didn't want to start farming achievements again, just to get hocked on doing a lot of stuff again. With this change I can continue on contest with my friend :). Though I do have to admit that all the time where I've been avoiding achievements have put me pretty far behind ;)
Also if this patch means that I can prove to pugs, that "I" as a person have been through some content, on some other character, which allows me to enter on this new alt, then I'll be forever grateful. Though I have the feeling that achievements still will show if its an account or char achievement. Thus giving pugs a new reason to doubt you and to let you into their pug. I still hope that it will be easier in general to get into pugs :).
Anyways great discussion from you guys. A final note about those of you who ask for a "turn account wide off". From a programming point of view I think this will be very tough. Not impossible, but tough, and that's why its not going to be made possible :)

I clearly remember the dissatisfaction when playing on my Paladin, just because my Violet Proto-Drake was stuck on my Death Knight.
I highly agree, that misc. items shouldn't be your reason for playing a certain class. You should play the class because you like the class itself, not because you have items that satisfy yourself or others.
All I desire from you now Blizzard, is a shared faction-realm gold pouch. (E.g. all alliance characters on a certain realm has a shared gold pouch.)
It's also important for me to point out, that you still need to make people use effort to get the achivements. Don't do the mistake of making Loremaster a random-earned achivement, because you chose different leveling routes. I think that would be a shame.
Make it harsh, but worth it!

Well, first of all its not just the account wide achievement thing but a lot others like the shared account wide mounts. My lvl 2 warr has 101 mount. and most of my titles which i have been sitting for hours on my computer to get. Once i do something ---> i have never to do it again. And please dont come with the comments about character specific achivs and account bound. Its all the same at the end. Making my HK's combine is also a ridicilous idea . So blizzard when you said "we never want you to play Character A instead of Character B because of achievement concerns. " showed me that you rather focus on new 10-14 year old players ( to whom this game is hard) than your old school players who farmed 1 reputation for months , or grinded a mount or a boss or something else. You will loose players ( probably me , who is playing not since beginning but i am playing 6 years) but i guess thats just moneymaking business. I would really see some responds from Blizzard but i know no one gives a crap.

It discourages me to do pvp at all just for the mount rewards, as I cant use the mount on my alts that dont do pvp.

I have some expensive mounts with my character on a server I used to raid on, including the Traveller's Tundra Mammoth, but I can't see this from my RP server characters... Same goes for Phoenix Hatchling (from Magister's Terrace)... Can anyone confirm if any of this is actually Account-Wide... or is it just Realm-Wide (or Server-Wide)?
Argent Dawn
Also, about the game 'getting to easy'. I think dungeons, raids and questing are contributing (nearing) 100% of that feeling, whereas some achievements might give me that same feeling. This change I actually love. Way to go!

Cause if u got 5 lvl 85's you can farm for it 5times a day... there SHOULD be like a account only 1day mount drop cooldown or what u would call it :)
