Bringing Achievements to the Account Level

We recently added account-level changes to achievements in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and there’s still a lot of work left before we’re done. The plan here is to illustrate the intent behind our design, which should in turn help you figure out the answers to many of your questions.
Overall, we never want you to play Character A instead of Character B because of achievement concerns. If Character A had the Violet Proto-Drake, then you might not play Character B. If Character A was only one holiday away from the Violet Proto-Drake, then you may not play Character B. If Character A had completed most of the raid achievements from Dragon Soul, you may not want to bring Character B for one fight and miss out on the achievement. Having alts is cool and working on achievements is cool, but we don’t want the two systems to work against each other.
This goal is paramount and drives everything else. If we allowed you to earn extra achievement points from completing an achievement on two different characters, then you might only want to play the character with the most points and you’d feel like you had to grind through all the achievements with every alt, thus defeating the purpose of having account-level achievements.
Most achievements are account-wide
This means you only earn the points once. If you have earned an achievement on one character, you can see it on all your characters. However, and this is important, you will still see the achievement toast (the pop-up notification) if a second or subsequent character completes the achievement. We think it’s still important to recognize milestones like reaching level 80, maxing out a profession, or killing a raid boss for the first time. It's fun to have everyone congratulate you when you get the toast. Nonetheless, this will just be a new character of yours completing the achievement that you’ve already earned on your account. You won’t double up on points.
Most criteria are not account-wide
If you start an achievement on one character, you can't then finish the achievement on another (there are exceptions, so please keep reading). We didn't think it made sense for one character to get level 60 and another to get level 20 and then see the "level 80" achievement toast. If you start to explore Thousand Needles on one character, you’ll probably want to finish that achievement on the same character.
Some achievements are "meta achievements."
These are achievements that require you to get other specific achievements. An infamous example is "What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been." These achievements generally ARE account-wide. If one character earned Noble Gardener and another character earned The Flame Warden, then your account would get Long Strange Trip. (Otherwise it would be weird: it would look as if you had the sub-achievements, but you wouldn't have the meta-achievement). Even though you need Explore Thousand Needles on one character, all of your characters can contribute to Explore Kalimdor.
A very few achievements are account-only.
There are two categories of account-only achievements. One is achievements that are not possible to earn on one character. If we made an achievement to level every class to level 90, it would be account-only. (I'm not sure we will, but it's a good example.) The other category are achievements that are just brutal to complete on one character (and you’d never want to do for multiples), such as 2500 daily quests or 250K honorable kills. In these cases, the cumulative work of all your characters on those criteria will count.
Our intent is that any rewards granted from achievements (pets, mounts, titles, and tabards) will be shared at the account level.
I'm not going to promise this yet, because a lot of magic has to happen for that to work, but it's our intent. We have discussed having a character level requirement for some rewards, so that your level-2 gnome couldn’t walk around with the "Defender of a Shattered World" title just because your level-90 shaman earned it. If the gnome made it to level 80, though, you could proudly show off your title. You also won’t be able to use a faction-specific pet, mount, or title on the wrong faction. The achievement wouldn’t go away -- you just wouldn’t be able to show it off on that character. There are probably additional exceptions and details we’ll find as we dig deeper into the system.
This is the kind of system that will evolve over time, and we don’t think this has to be the way achievements work forever. As beta players start experimenting with it and offering feedback, I am certain that we will end up making even more changes.

Making raid completion achievements account wide does a lot for easing tensions in guilds as well.

over all i think blizzard is on the right track but a lot of tweaking will be needed to make it just right.

TBH i hate the idea - and feel abit like its "cheating" - i love the game - and yes it take alot of my time to play. but with this new system - i think ill get feed up faster, than with the "old" system - that every character have to earn their own achivement.

That could even lead to more dedicated achievements, like getting the For the Alliance Achievement with 3 different characters rewards your account with an awesome unique PVP themed mount.

You still get the 'toast' when you complete an achievement, and everyone nearby and in your party/guild will see that and congratulate you for it.
The only change here is that now those of us who DO enjoy achievement hunting won't feel like we need to hunt achievements with one character at the expense of all our other characters. If you never cared much for achievements before, then I fail to see how this hampers your gameplay experience. It only improves it for achievement hunters.

Some players have played wow for a long time. I’m sure many players that have spent the time and effort to earn achievements on alts will be upset with this. That’s a bit disappointing to anyone that spent time on alts. So those that spent time and effort on alts basically wasted it. If the achievement system started as an account system it would be a big difference compared to changing it at this point.
There is a lot on gold spent and made on the ah on mounts and pets. That will all end. Players that had the same mount on multiple characters never seemed to complain until now when they spent tons on them (their choice), but now many are since anyone that bought it 1 time has it on all characters. I think the idea of having shared achievement based mounts is a great idea since most players won’t try to get the achievement a second time but not all mounts. Why not make mounts and pets bind to account or even bind when equipped so if it drops for an alt you can send it to your main or sell it? That way for rep mounts you only have to grind it 1 time then you can buy and mail them to your alts if you wish
Also no reason to ever go or do anything in EK, Kalmidor, Outland or Northrend, since you only need to do it 1 time. Those areas are empty anyways. And I’m sure any new players will be excited to start and realize that there is no one around to help them get achievements since everyone already has them. They will also have no reason to do old quests or raids since they will already have all the mounts or pets from their main. Why not add some new mounts, pets or achievements to the old content giving players a reason to return to some of those places?
And how am I going to want to play an alt more when I start a meta achievement on my main and I still need to finish it on that character to get credit? I’m not going to want to take an alt and get an achievement when it won’t count anyways. If I have all the world events done on 1 character what reason do I have to do them on any others if I already have credit for it? The world events seem to be a big part of the game right now. Will they just disappear when everyone completed them once? You talk about an account only achievement such as possibly level 90 on all classes. Are you planning on allowing more than 10 characters per realm? Or else who will be interested in this achievement since there will be 11 classes and only 10 spaces for characters.
They also say the new talents are to customize your characters more. How can I customize more with fewer options? Why not leave expanded talent trees and make it easier to change them if need be? Maybe you could make it like the glyphs are now. This leaves us many options to customize our characters.
When I lose all the achievement points on my alts to have an account value I earned on my main it will be time to find something else to do. Why would I wish to play an alt when they have nothing to work for? And for those of you that say “quit blizzard won’t even notice,” they will. You say quit because you see us as a single individual not as many. When its thousands or hundreds of thousands of individuals, they will notice. Gamers are usually loyal to the games they play. They don’t mind a few “let downs”. But when they quit and find something new to play they rarely leave their new game to go back to the old disappointment.
Why not do as some others commented? Make the new account system optional or better yet, open some new servers and allow transfers for those that want the new system. It seems to me that way you can please both sides instead of upsetting one of them.
If you don’t have time to grind achievements on alts because you have a family or friends then why cry about someone else that does? You say to someone “get a life” because they have more time for wow then you do. Sorry but it’s you that needs to get a life. When you’re spending time with family or friends and you worry about someone else playing wow instead of enjoying that time with others.
The pet battles are good idea. If you want to do it it’s another option, if you don’t then you can skip it. But do you really think those that play pokemon now, will buy wow and all the expansions and monthly fee to play the same thing they do now for a 1 time fee?
It does seem like they are “dumbing” the game for children with the new pokemon pet battles and Mario cart bgs. Both being ok since they are optional. Good luck getting all those new kids to play in this wonderful world economy. W

You say to get a lot of achievement points you stick to 1 character. Does that mean if you play an alt you don’t get any points? Did you mean high achievement points? Because to me, having 7,000 points on a main and 15,000 on alts is a lot compared to having 13,000 on a main and 2,000 on alts.

And why would this make things easier? You still need to put the same amount of time in to get the achievement; the only thing changing is that players with multiple characters they love won't be penalised (ie. Having to grind the same rep multiple times)
I hope bliz just go ahead with it and don't listen to the haters...

I imagine the achievments will work similiar to how they are in D3(for anyone thats played it they will know what im talking about). What is the point in getting so many achiements/points on one character and then getting/try to get them again on another. While very few people that have alot of time on their hands may find that odley fun, its redundant.
Try looking at it this way - Achievments will be(for the most part) attched to your battle.net account instead of one character, with numerous ones that will be specific to a particular character. Either being class specific or just have to be fulfilled on a sole character.
People moaning that this change with account-wide points makes the game easier...How??? Dose it make it easier to get them all? i can asure you it wont. Why? Because imo account-wide means new and more interesting types of achievments to go for and obtain. Easy example "Kill all boss's in (insert raid name) with each class". And im sure there will be many achievments that require you to do something on more than 1 character to obtain it.
And some people said about how much content completed and experiance gained on on any given class. Mostly aimed at raiding i assume. Time and time again its been said, people gain achievments while facepalming the floor on a boss. Dose it really prove they know what there doing? That said some achievments do require a bit more of a tatical approach like rolling deathwing in a certain order. But come on, how hard is it to run right or run left into a hole...
All in all if they are going the way i think they are with this then it is going to be an awsome adjustment to the system with a hell of alot of potential.

Ok, let glory achis go acc wide, same goes for battlemaster, arena master, chef and so on.
Dont give every alt achi for fx Blackhorn HC or 2k 5v5 rating. They should be char bound.
Or is it your plan to have new dinged alt to run around with Glad title or savior of Azeroth?
I really feel that achi points is a single char thing. Shows that you have used time and effort into getting that many as one class.
Again if u have made some achis on one of your chars dosent show that you can do it as another class.

What are you getting at? achievements aren't being made easier, if you have already earned a horrible grindy achievement on one char why not have the option to show your efforts on your other chars?
personally i like the idea of all of these achievements, minipets and mounts going account wide.. it means im not shacked to the main character i've been playing for the past few years and i'm not being penalised for swapping mains by losing access to all the rare/ hard to get / no longer available minis and mounts i have already collected over the years. As far as i'm concerned it was ME the PLAYER that put the hours in to earn those rewards, not the character.

And sharing 2500 daily quests and HKs is just stupid.. I mean I dont do much PvP and that annoys the hell outta me.. so I imagine it wil lREALLY annoy people that do pvp alot.. I dont want to get Big achevs like 'Long strange trip' becuase my rogue has x amount done, my mage has x amount done , my priest has another x amount.. and combined it makes the whole.. that is just rubbish.. Please for the love of all that is still good in this game.. LEAVE some things to still feel like they have been accomplished and earned..
Sure certain pets and mounts.. share them, for sure why not.. But then other ones nope I dont think so.. I think certain special mounts should be character specific only..
If you really do insist on making this hodgepodge of a mess of achevs at least let the player turn it on and off..

Sharing Mounts? Np!
Sharing Achievements? WTF?
If I get bored on this char, then I swap to an other to get it faster and maybe better.
Sharing TABARDS? How do I need to get my Tabards If they are on my Alliance Char?! Does ALL of my chars get the same tabards? Oh Dear bags :S!
And Titles? That's why I tried to get the ach on them all!
Next year 2013 will only a few ppl do Noble Garden. In 2014 will NOONE do Noble Garden...

As for the amount of achievements, there's a full expansion coming.
Wanting to work on every char to get every achievement ( mounts, rep,...) is not fun, it is very mind numbing.
