Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Azeroth -- It’s a land of turmoil, harsh and unyielding for heroes of the Horde and the Alliance as they struggle against enemies from within and without. For those stepping forth for the first time into this implacable realm, life can seem overwhelming, but surviving in this hostile environment is not insurmountable with a little help. Will your band of brothers and sisters, heroes and mentors, heed your call for aid?

Azeroth needs more heroes to rise through the ranks and your guild can help. We’re looking for a few good guilds to volunteer for the new Guild Mentoring Program. Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content.

F.A.Q.

Q. What is the Guild Mentoring Program?
A. The guild mentoring program identifies guilds on select realms to act as mentors for new and low level players (below level 85).

Q. How long does the Guild Mentoring Program run for?
A.
The Guild Mentoring Program will run for a period of three months from the time that guilds are selected and notified.

Q. Is there a certain criteria for being selected as a mentoring guild?
A.
Guilds must meet certain criteria to be considered for the Guild Mentoring Program:

  • Guilds must be located on one of the selected realms.
  • They must be willing to commit to the program for a three month period.
  • They must be willing to change their name for the three month Guild Mentoring participation period. (Names will be changed back at the end of the program.)
  • Guilds must be at least level 6 and have an active membership.

Q. How many guilds will be recruiting per realm?
A.
Only one guild will be selected per faction on each realm.

Q. What does my guild need to do to volunteer?
A.
The guild leader will need to submit an application to community-EN@blizzard.com with the following information:

  • Please use the "[Guild Mentoring]" tag in the subject line of your email
  • Current guild name and guild leader name
  • Current realm and faction of the applying guild
  • Current guild level and number of guild members
  • Guild leader’s real name and phone number (this information will not be published and is for internal use only)
  • Brief description of the Mentoring Guild and a link to your guild's website, if applicable.

Q. How long are you accepting applications for?
A.
We will be accepting applications for two weeks. We will then select a guild for the Guild Mentoring Program from those that meet the criteria and contact the guild leader.

Q. On what realms will this program be available?
A.
Mentoring guilds will be chosen for the following realms:

EN Realms DE Realms FR Realms
Thunderhorn Thrall Hyjal
Azuremyst Alleria Dalaran
Lightbringer Malygos Eversong
Aggramar Arygos
Stormrage
Aszune

Q. Do participating guilds get anything special?
A.
Some of the benefits for taking part in the program include:

  • MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
  • Guild member private forum access
  • Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program

I dont see why you make a program when there are already tons of guilds going out of their way to help newcomers.

Unless this system you are working on now is going to reward them in a way.

In other words we do not need it.

As if were not harassed enough by guild invite bots as it is.
And why are you going out of your way to force people into guilds, Blizzard?
In all the years that I've played I've never had need to be in a guild, and the couple times that I have been "persuaded" into a guild, the experience has left a lot of bad memories.
I do not want the first thing I see when I create a fresh new character be a guild invite out of nowhere.
So right from the start you are going to force people into a guild they may not feel at home in, just for the sake of being in a guild because according to you everyone should be in a guild and raid endlessly?

Should be possible for guilds on all realms to participate in this. It's a great idea. Sometimes class quests just don't cut it. Sometimes you just need a little extra help and/or some hands on experience alongside a more experienced player in order to learn.
Personally I'd love for my guild to be in the mentoring program as I enjoy helping other people with the game and I know alot of my guildmates would enjoy it aswell.
So please, Blizzard, introduce this program for all realms and not just the highly populated ones.

Excellant idea! I didn't know what trolling was until I joined WOW. I used to shy away from dungeons because as an older player I wasn't as adept as some of the younger players and I still struggle with some aspects. Good luck and lets hope you make it a pleasant experience for everyone.

I have played SWTOR, and there each class has its personal tailored quest. And in that quest, you get to play episodes that do force you to learn how to use your toon. Like: having to beat up a 'boss' that heals itself (interrupt), or has adds that need CC, or even worse, the 'boss' has an ability that will obliterate you if not controlled. Since each class has its quest line, with twists, even making an alt is not boring anymore. I think that introducing such quests in the game, and also ones that do teach a player little by little what he can do with his toon, will really make the game better. Also, instances in which a fight is not DPS race or a gear check, but more like a brain check. There are still instances at lower levels (AQ40 for example) that are hard if you go in thinking gear is everything. RoS in BT can easy kill a lvl 85 also. Bottom line is, if the other players can't or won't teach anyone something, then introduce an A.I. based mentor for example. Let the dummy target be also a bit intelligent, and offer advices based on your game style or based on the way you throw stuff at it.

@Victtoria: Haven't played SWTOR myself, but I do like your suggestions and am inclined to agree with you (especially if the A.I. mentor business would be optional). Nice one.

@Victtoria: AI? brilliant idea. I sometimes lag way behind others on gear etc as I dont feel comfortable doing dungeonswith people I dont know, had a couple of bad experiences with other very rude players when first starting out in dungeons has meant I tend to avoid them and play solo as much as I can, which means you dont get the full use of the game or learn as much about your character abilities. Having access to an AI would make all the difference.

To be honest, all we need are more class quests. I admit it, I don't fully know the potential of my class. I've leveled my character up since level 1, and have surived by getting advice along the way from that rare patient player that I sometimes meet during dungeons. I started at the end of WotLK, so I was even more confused because of the big changes to cata during my lvl 55-60. I find that the harder I try to DPS, the less I do, and I am usually the last guy who leaves a group as I like to give the group a chance. But what I am trying to say, is that WoW itself isn't enough to fully comprehend the classes, I remember when I leveled up, I had to catch my own pet, learning me how to do that. Why wasn't there more such quests? Such as a quest that learned you how to kite, which I suck at. Learning you how to USE your character for your full potential. That is what Blizz should aim at in my opinion.

what help can help now when the ppl dont even know eachother, noone need help for nothing with this fast dungun finder and raid finder, WoW became from social game to selfish game, in raid and dungen finders every one want the things easy and fast without any skills, without hard work, if you wipe twice everyone is leaving....WoW is ruined !

seems like a good idea , but is it me or is WoW getting 'dumbed' down ???
tryin to make it too easy to play ?? ... maybe its just me but everything seems to be being made easier .. changes to talent tree and such ... if they want mentors do it like other games have .. say Aion .. they have Mentor quests daily .. maybe something like that ... the mentor gains no xp but the mentee gets full xp so havin a higher lvl with you for that quest detracts nothing .... or maybe have some starter realms where people can learn to play on an 'easy' mode then come and join in on the normal stuff when ready .. maybe i'm just old and grumpy :)

i really think it is a pity Ghostlands hasn't been chosen for this program. my guild is already working in such a way in being a friendly, welcoming and helpful guild. we always help each others out and take good care of our low level players, helping them understanding the game, gearing and speccing. we in Hells Dicers would gladly have participated, not for any whats-in-it-for-us reasons, but for creating a solid guild with a family-like atmosphere were we can have loads of fun together, regardless of level or experience.

I imagine what has happened is, Blizz did some research into why ppl who have played the trial edition then don't go on to subscribe to the full game after trying it. I would say that one of the leading reasons ppl gave for not buying the game was that they couldn't figure it out (probably cause they're idiots and children) and found ppl in the game unwilling to be nice and help them out (cause let's face it, the majority are).
Now Blizz, in an attempt to scoop up all that lost revenue, wants to exploit it's already paying customers by making it look cool and giving a few selects some silly MVP status.

The only thing you have to ask yourself is; Would more people playing wow and giving Blizz their money benefit me in any way? I suppose it could enhance the wow community and give us more ppl to play with. Personally I don't care but perhaps you do.

An interesting idea, I just wondered, when did WoW become so advanced we actually needed help? Basically, I just start attacking anything that moves, and that's worked for me for 6 years now :P

I understand the need to teach new players how to play WoW but I think there are better ways to do it, Final fantasy 11 had a system where anyone can set themsevles as a "Mentor" and new player had an option to look for a mentor to assist them, I think this system with achieves and rewards would get a lot more people involved with newer players.

Actualy, this will be an oportunity for the mediocre guilds to recruit players. No top guilds will apply for this program because they will be very busy with the biggining of MoP, preparing for raids or PvP.Without a proper reword for this ,nobody will care about new players except for the social guilds. Wich is what is happening right now..we didnt need it a special ocasion for this.

@Ahile: You're dripping condescension there, careful. Just because a guild is not in the top ten raiding guilds on their realm or, Heaven forbid, doesn't even raid at all, it doesn't mean that it's "mediocre". It just means they don't value the same things you do.

We used to to this by default since '08. Can't say that waving a MVP status in front of my face is going to make it any more rewarding. Either you're a helpful player, or you're an elitist wannabe f-tard that has to be paid in order to be helpful...

@Lightbeef: So true! I suck at dungeons and can say that most are not that willing to help... I always mention it at the start so that i get some guidance but mostly i find myself kicked out :( How am i to learn when the so called elites won't even help?! Makes 'm less elite to me... And i almost never do dungeons cause of that... It's a shame cause i love the game!

@Ikkitousen: The "payment" isn't particularly enticing. I doubt that's compelling any guilds to participate, especially since the big "reward" is MVP status on the Blizzard forums for up to 3 guild members and having your guild renamed. Therefore, the majority of guilds opting to participate will be doing so for other reasons. I'd like to think it's because they value helping people -- and perhaps they were already doing this anyway but will take the opportunity to do it on a much larger scale . Some, however, are probably doing it because they see it will increase their own guild's membership. No doubt there are other reasons too, but because they're "paid"… doubtful!

This sounds like a great idea, but it defeats the object of 'Learning to play your character'. It can give help to some degree but this game is meant to be designed to be played for fun and for self learning purposes when you're not an experienced player. I also agree with the majority of the comments here; The experienced players will only care about farming and becoming the 'best'.

You never know, if you don't try. See nyeh. I'd give the program a shot. Besides, about the gold farming. So far I know you can still get banned from buying gold. So, stop QQ about that. Blizz can't do anything against a huge market of gold farmers. Since, accounts get hacked. Gold from those accounts get transfered and sold. Then people buy gold to get their gold back. Vicious circle. Whuut =.=''. Plus, doesn't almost every person start playing wow because of a friend?

have to say it prob will be a gd idear for a few but at the end of the day people cant learn there class's properly anymore with it bein so easy to level it isnt 5mins before u learn each new spell and thats not gd the game has lost a lot of content and as a long time player who was progress raiding wolk back in the day i stoped playing and have been playing again for a couple of months and it aint the same game anymore its not right to go in a dungeon and by the time u run thou with easy couz nothing seems to level corect for the gear people are using u have 3new spells to learn just isnt senceable i use to think ohh new spell what does that do and mess with it now whats the point when all that matters is the few main spells ive seen cases of people not even botherin to learn spells for 5-10levels wtf game should not be able to be played like that add tactics to low level quests and dungeons then people will know what to expect when they want to raid and give us some content as much as bliz say they want every one to be able to get to top level whats the point in bein able to get to top level so easy if u cant put the time in to level then how can u commit to what half the raiding guilds want

Complete waste of time. In every guild i ever was a member of there was always someone willing to help others, as i myself would do. Either blizz has no idea whats going on in their own game or they have some kind of agenda going on, about which i wont even bother to speculate.
