Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Introducing the Guild Mentoring Program

Azeroth -- It’s a land of turmoil, harsh and unyielding for heroes of the Horde and the Alliance as they struggle against enemies from within and without. For those stepping forth for the first time into this implacable realm, life can seem overwhelming, but surviving in this hostile environment is not insurmountable with a little help. Will your band of brothers and sisters, heroes and mentors, heed your call for aid?

Azeroth needs more heroes to rise through the ranks and your guild can help. We’re looking for a few good guilds to volunteer for the new Guild Mentoring Program. Guilds participating in the program will take part in identifying new players within selected realms, offering to invite them into the guild, and teaching them the ways of Azeroth as they level and reach the end game content.

F.A.Q.

Q. What is the Guild Mentoring Program?
A. The guild mentoring program identifies guilds on select realms to act as mentors for new and low level players (below level 85).

Q. How long does the Guild Mentoring Program run for?
A.
The Guild Mentoring Program will run for a period of three months from the time that guilds are selected and notified.

Q. Is there a certain criteria for being selected as a mentoring guild?
A.
Guilds must meet certain criteria to be considered for the Guild Mentoring Program:

  • Guilds must be located on one of the selected realms.
  • They must be willing to commit to the program for a three month period.
  • They must be willing to change their name for the three month Guild Mentoring participation period. (Names will be changed back at the end of the program.)
  • Guilds must be at least level 6 and have an active membership.

Q. How many guilds will be recruiting per realm?
A.
Only one guild will be selected per faction on each realm.

Q. What does my guild need to do to volunteer?
A.
The guild leader will need to submit an application to community-EN@blizzard.com with the following information:

  • Please use the "[Guild Mentoring]" tag in the subject line of your email
  • Current guild name and guild leader name
  • Current realm and faction of the applying guild
  • Current guild level and number of guild members
  • Guild leader’s real name and phone number (this information will not be published and is for internal use only)
  • Brief description of the Mentoring Guild and a link to your guild's website, if applicable.

Q. How long are you accepting applications for?
A.
We will be accepting applications for two weeks. We will then select a guild for the Guild Mentoring Program from those that meet the criteria and contact the guild leader.

Q. On what realms will this program be available?
A.
Mentoring guilds will be chosen for the following realms:

EN Realms DE Realms FR Realms
Thunderhorn Thrall Hyjal
Azuremyst Alleria Dalaran
Lightbringer Malygos Eversong
Aggramar Arygos
Stormrage
Aszune

Q. Do participating guilds get anything special?
A.
Some of the benefits for taking part in the program include:

  • MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
  • Guild member private forum access
  • Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program

@Dzaster: Oh stop moaning. If a GM (which I am) puts some work into a guild then it can prosper and be awesome. I'm on a rather small server and my guild is just a casual social one with one DS normal clear a week. I rarely do dungeons with randomers (unless it's for the tank/healer bags). Just join a nice, friendly guild and be social and friendly and before you know it you'll have more people than you can bring for things.

@Reirei: but he's talking about BIG guilds [as I started] and only BIG guilds and their approach to new players or players coming back after some break. That's the problem... and another thing...
being SENTIMENTAL is not moaning. People enjoyed 'guild life' self made GUILD events, leveling together etc.
Now it's bunch of so called 'socials' where no 1 will help, no 1 cares and you can only CHAT with them while doing dailies or go on once-a-week raid [big deal]. And I'm GM myself and most important for me is: that ppl respect each other, LIKE each other, play together, help no matter what, and treat themselves as EQUALS. In here lvl 1 player is treated like every 85. So don't even start talking about 'socials' ...most of us already know it's just waste of time. We all play for fun, in our spare free time etc. So YOUR guild should ROCK! So all players joining will STAY, enjoy their playing time, bring some friends, NEW PLAYERS even. How can new players enjoy boring social, where You don't have any guild events, fun guild quests for all, boosting system, crafting duties, guild farmers, not even talking about guild bank packed with USEFUL stuff [80% of guild banks are just junk + useless things + 1-2 GM&Officer's tabs for raid gear no 1 can have] :) WE're creating world of guilds in here... world where new player will stay ...and socials make them leave. Sad but true

@Lunarclaw: I have friends too, even outside the guild. My point is: why GUILDIES don't play together. Why they make only elite groups to raid and do 5-mans in 100-200 membes guilds there's always about 30-60 real accounts and in most cases 1 10-man raiding group of friends ...rest is just forced to look for groups on trade. Or even better... GM's and officers raid with other guild only bcs they're FRIENDS :) So what's the point of having own guild then? We're running 5-mans and raids ONLY with guildies and sometimes have some free spots for other ppl from outside the guild. Imo it should work this way.

@Ayvan: Dont get me wrong mate, i, as raider in my guild, had same argument with my Officers and GMaster. I was trying to ask why there is constant group of 10 people raiding and teaming up when we have around 200 members in guild, count like 100alts, so thats 100members in guild, but only few of us are teaming and making random runs/DS.

The answer is simple. There are people that are in guild just for fun, they do not want to raid, they do not want to PvP or to make any noticable progress, they just want to enjoy the game.

We went that far that we allowed PvP gear, enchanted and gemed for PvE with minimum i378, we didnt requested enchanted weapons, so we even crossed bottom line for DS Normal, yet, noone applied. Why is that? we allowed PvP blues in it, we are willing to have hard time for them, yet they dont want to join. Why is that? Answer is simple, WoW content is now easily accessible to everyone, thus people can be less social than they can be in old times. In old time you had to be social and geared, so that guild members can "remember" you, not just you toon, you had to make a friends with ppl in guild with same goal as you to access some part of content, now its easily accessible trough LFR and DF, thus allowing you to be social as much as you want.

@Elni: I rly get it, but hi % of players don't even bother to check ANY site for some help, they just spam trade waiting for someone to TELL them what they need to do, copying talent trees, gear enchants, gems etc without even thinking WHY ppl build character this way.
And then... they just don't know how to play it.
I was asked MANY times why I'd made my talent tree like this ...I can make it better for higher dps... etc etc
My PvE spec is build for good raid&5-man performance ...and being able to solo old instances like TK or other raids.
Making Your character same as someone's won't give you ultimate dps machine. All depends HOW you play your class and how good you know your class. I know many players using single pvp gear pieces in PvE sets just bcs they know what they're doing.
So for me all the problems begin when player don't know anything about game, class, gear etc ...and he's not willing to learn it. He just wants to play and have it all done by someone else.

And about social side of guilds...
I know it's bad, most of ppl got used to doing everything alone or with just few friends.
Dungeon Finder, Raid Finder ...all tools that made in-guild bonding unnecessary.
In my guild we try diff approach:
all players play together, ask for help, get to know each other playing style, skills and abilities, help each other. So there's no solid group for anything. We're changing roles, teams all the time so no 1 feels left behind.
And it works in PvE and PvP [but most of players play both]
And if someone likes to play alone we know it already [from application] and we help him with gearing, levelling tips and anything he'll find helpful.
So in general we're just building big pack of friends. And for us it works perfect :)

We've just started nice guild on Hellscream EU some time ago. Atm lvl 10 almost [http://slayers-of-kings.guildlaunch.com] and ppl join after reading rules on main page news bcs they WANT to be PART OF US, not for perks, not for raids, just bcs of our rules and attitude. I get it blizz wants to get GM's more interested in helping new inc players but tbh... guilds should do it ALL THE TIME [like we do]. Too many players joining guilds only 4 perks and bonuses of lvl25, just for raids etc. Not many ppl feel like they're part of something, don't ask for help, all lone-wolf-questers. On my realm there's plenty of 25lvl guilds, with many players but ppl from these guilds look for raid groups on trade... for me that's pathetic and shows only how selfish are GM's and officers. You need to have STATUS, be a PRO ...or have tank or healer geared enough to raid with GUILD ELITE. If You're in this kind of guild I feel sorry for You. Blizz should make something with this... not just pop in with another idea of how to make it even worse...

@Ayvan: as horde player, and with horde in my heart, no i didnt liked ally music.

Maybe its stupid of me to see it that way, but since im horde vanilla player from day one of game release i remember that open ingame hostile environment that screamed of warr between bloodthirsty horde and honorable allies.

I remeber open iRL confortations with my ally friends even now, and i enjoy it quite much, this bind us even more as players and rise ur competition spirit to new level. <3

@Elni: exactly :)
We are suppose to hate each other [as factions] as long as we're enemies in main story :)
I don't hate players and tbh idc what side any 1 will pick as long as you can play along and fight for Your side.
It makes it even more fun experience.
And IRL? who cares if You play Horde or Ally outside the game we're 1 kind - Players :)

Normal guilds, without this program can actually do the same thing. It is just about being friendly towards everybody, new players too! Our guild does not mind people who's never played the game before. We help with whatever is needed and are very social besides that. We always have a chat going. It only takes a tiny bit of effort - unfortunately, too many guilds are only focused about gear and progress now a days. But good ones are still out there.

This is an awesome initiative! It reminds me of the system in SWG, where you could put an additional tag under your character's name, guild and title that identified you as a "new player helper". I made a lot of friends and business partners from that, and I'd adore if Blizz added something on that level in WoW. :) Too bad I can't apply with my own guild for this thing - but whatnot, I think we're already doing what we can to give new players a good start to WoW.

If it was available on my realm I would apply for my mains guilds to mentor.. We have class leads/Specc leads {Sometimes the same person will hold the position of class and specc lead..not always though}.. And we have people in charge of doing each proff for guild members.. I am guild Leatherworker{on my main}.. We also have some pretty awesome Theory crafters in guild, and some very good officers..
We became full a while back and couln't accept new members..lol We pruned the guild a bit since then.. We're pretty tolerant, but bullies and ninjas will not be tolerated.. people do get more than one chance though{Unles they do something really bad}.. Most things are sorted out quickly and quietly..
There are many good guilds out there.. I think the system sounds pretty good..:)

I would just like to say for any people on Draenor (Horde) - I know its not on the list of realms selected for mentoring - that if they are looking for a nice friendly guild that will not hesitate to help out new players you should join The Psychotics, I have been playing wow since WoTLK came out but have no level 85 characters and they have been happy to answer all my "noob" questions (The ins and outs of rogues sparking many)

And also i think that this is a great opportunity for both new players to learn how to play the game and also for old guilds to let their reputations shine, the only problem is that i think it should be on more realms :)
Nice one Blizz!

This is a good idea.
I'm lvl 85 but done purely through Questing on my own, so now I'm involved in Raids and Dungeons, I don't know the etiquette, and the shorthand used is another language.
It's also difficult to find info on how to progress your class at this lvl. And I've never done an Areana...where do I start with that..?
Mentoring makes the helping official, I'm in an excellent Guild (Camelot) where I always get helpful answers, but I some times worry I'm being a nuisance. If someone puts their hand up and says " I am prepared to help you whoever and whetever level" it's makes the help official and stress free for both parties.
I'm sure there are good reasons why this may need to be done as a Guild, but maybe the Social (O) option could have a mentor tab where you could ask a mentor a question so it is not guild specific.
People learn in different ways, some will read, others like to talk to someone, this widens the options for help and progression.
Maybe you also need different levles of mentor, I would be able to help lower levels but not higher ones for instance, and would be of more help to my class that others, so maybe you need to split mentors into classes as well.....not meaning to over complicate it.

My first time of posting too =) I am GM of a lvl 25 guild that has been around for over 4 years now. Blizz - I can see why you thought this would be a good idea as there are many lvling guilds out there who (rumour has it) are just glorified gold sellers. I have always been happy to help people - answering questions if they are getting the run around in trade. Indeed I recruited a good friend who asked in trade 'how do I collect the things I bought from AH?' ahw=) But I forsee some snags - this program involves an investment of time and effort in people. In the last 4 years I cannot count the number of times I have done precisely that and been let down, usually by the under 25's agegroup. Now, I will happily help people who help themselves, but I will not be there to wipe peoples noses. Unfortunately I cannot see the benefit for good guilds who agree to join this program so this isnt viable. Good try Blizz but no cigar ....again!

It seems like there's alot of guild leaders and/or guildmembers that doesen't understand the concept of this because they think their guild is doing excactly that all the time. But I have encountered lots of guilds with a helpfull core and alot of doucebags, I know you think you got it all under control but it is hard to monitor your guildmemebers every movement and action therefore I think there can be alot of broken links in good guilds.. Not meant to hurt anyone, there is alot of good guilds out there, but sometimes the facade of the helpful just cover for the cruel bastards hiding in there.

I have been playing wow since vanilla. It took some time to understand my character. I started with a lock so it was not that easy. I could never have done it without helpfull friends, players or guild. In those days players were helpfull. I can still remember first time in UBRS and the leader stopped before evry mobgroup or boss and explained what we all should do and not do aswell. It was fun and teaming.
This hardly happen nowadays. Often you see in generalchat how new players ask common question and get stupid answers.
Groups are made through dungeonfinder and you never see the members after the instance is done. Player does not even say hi before they start and if you aren´t good enough you are outvoted from the group.
When there only was vanilla it was pretty easy to learn "evrything" but with all new during the years it aint easy for a new player to find the way through the game if you are not lucky to get into a helpfull guild or get a friend to lvl with that can be your mentor.
This idea is a reminder to all experienced player how it was to be new and confuced about all and evrything and the fun to suddenly understand and evrything just is smooth.
Still i see players that after all years in wow is helpfull and kind, but to often i see trollers, wiseguys and to be honest mean players nagging at some new that only want an answer to a fairly asked question.

Guilds have got lazy though, some only relying on a select group of players (normally only 85) and sort of torturing young players with tricks, in my old guild someone tried to make me pay for thier help!:) My current guild is great, free repairs, guild bank unlocked(=great), they should make that rudimentary, that would be a great as it would take money away from guild masters and make them be forced to look after guildies, younger and noob-ier than themselves.

Maybe I just don't understand the point of this... as many have already said, I am always happy to help out new players etc., but learning how guilds work and how the world of Azeroth works is all part of the mystery and FUN of learning to play a new game - so if it's for brand-new players, why deprive them of that 'freshman' feel ? I remember those times with affection ... sure there are some people out there that are less than friendly to new players, but they will always be there - whatever the weather. It's a big ask to get guilds to change their name for 3 months if they've spent sometime trying to make a good one.

this idea has a lot of potential, but come on. personaly i like helping out new people, i have just bought a lvl25 guild to make it into a raiding guild where we invite people who have never raided before but have a general idea on how to play their class, and we teach them how boss mekanics and raiding in general works. but to teach new players everything, and use hours every day explaining? then you gotta make it worth our time and "•MVP status on the forums for the guild leader and recruitment officer
•Guild member private forum access
•Recognition for your guild as being participants in the program" is just not enough. give me something that i can benefit from and ill happily dedicate more time to learn new people the game.
