Professions: Living in Perfect Harmony

As with any new expansion, we often find that we have an opportunity to take a closer look at a variety of game systems within World of Warcraft and explore new ideas or improvements to the game. One system in particular is held near and dear to the hearts of the community: professions. With Mists of Pandaria, the designers were able to seize upon an opportunity to look at the role of materials and refine their purpose and their usefulness. In the end, they came up with Spirit of Harmony as the new resource du jour.
Harmonious Prospects
In Mists of Pandaria, we’re introducing a new material known as the Spirit of Harmony. It slices— it dices— well, ok, it doesn’t, but crafters of any stripe will find it has many uses. By now, any experienced crafter is used to filling bags with a variety of materials such as Primal Life, Primal Fire, Primal Earth, etc. but in Mists of Pandaria, it’s all about Spirit of Harmony (in combination with the usual materials, like ore, leather, and gems). Spirit of Harmony is the result of the designers simplifying an already complex system while still keeping a wide variety of possibilities open to players. Much like with other Primals, Motes of Harmony can be combined (10 to 1) to create one Spirit of Harmony.
Harmony is Personal
Let’s get right to it. Spirit of Harmony is a Bind on Pickup (or "BoP" to veterans) crafting material that can be found on every lootable creature in every zone in Pandaria -- from dungeons to the outdoor world. Intially, we want crafters to be out in the world adventuring instead of camping out in front of an auctioneer, hoping to score some cheap mats.
We understand that this may be of concern to those who play a variety of profession alts, and may consider other options for the future, including the possibility of allowing Spirits of Harmony to be Bind to Account in a future patch.
In addition to serving as a core crafting ingredient, Spirits of Harmony can also be used to purchase a variety of additional bonuses or materials that your character may need. While not every profession will get equal value out of them, most everyone will need to collect them for one reason or another.
Here are some examples of the many ways that Spirit of Harmony can be used:
- Alchemy: Purchase an extra Transmute.
- Archaeology: Purchase a restored artifact.
- Cooking: Exchange for an Iron Paw Token.
- Enchanting: Buy reagents.
- Engineering: New mounts and personal goggles.
- Herbalism: Purchase herbs.
- Inscription: Purchase rare inks.
- Jewelcrafting: Use to purchase extra daily discoveries.
- Tailoring, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking: Used to create epic items.
Purchasing materials may not ultimately be the most efficient way to gain resources, but it can be an added convenience to purchase something with Spirit of Harmony rather than going back into the world to get it. The Spirit of Harmony vendor can be found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

The point I was raising was the disadvantage of BoE against the advantage of BoA.

It seems like people believe it is a God given right to be able to play 5alts actively with only a few hours gaming each day.
The Sha'tar
Its not soo much a god given right to be able to play 5alts with only a few hours of gaming. its more I love to play my main. When I gather x amount of mats with my main and no longer need them with my main but my alts could still very very much benefit from those mats. I find it a bit of a shame to have those mats bind to my main and not too my account. They are just going to waste. Its seems a waste. Bind to account guarantees that the person farming the mats can use them as he or she wants. its not diminishing effort it just prevents an ocd way of farming something you have plenty abundance of on 1 char and could be better shared amongst your other chars.
Surely you can relate that its a bit sadistic to have for instance 200mats on your main that you alt need and you have to farm them again on your alt eventhough your the same person on both of those chars?

Many of us have leveled profs on alts to be self sufficient where by not every one of those alts might be ready to go out to get the Spirit of Harmony.
Making it BoA would solve the issue many have who use alts to craft items. Stopping botters will still ensure that there is less AH camping as people actually have to go herb and mine rather than purchasing everything from the AH but also enables them to "play" their main/s in the scarce time many have who juggle between working, kids or school/university.
It is nice to see that at least this important new item is not available on the "free market" but seriously, why punish everyone who took on leveling more than one toon and profs to now have to play all of them, regardless of their gearing and ability while at the same time those that have ruined the economy for so long can still go about their ways?
Making it BoE does what? Anger those that actually work/ed hard for their professions while those that foul up our game play can still do that.
Ores and herbs are used in many professions, why not let it drop there as well and have it BoA. Same for skinning. In this way you make botters - at least for the spirit of harmony part useless but reward the proper "gatherers".
BoE WILL drive people away, those that can not spend hours after hour playing every char they have just to get enough of those spirits to craft the items.
Do you have any idea how much time is used to level a char to 85, max profs on him? Now you in fact demand that every one of those is "ready" to go out to go against all the odds (for those prof chars you never geared to the max because they are only your crafters) to get the needed spirits?
I can already imagine guild chats " Sorry, I can not raid or do dungeons or help you lower guildies because I have to work on my crafter as I need him ready to go out and hope for spirit drops." etc.. you get my point.
Get botters and dupers off the servers, I mean honestly, how much more proof of someone botting do you need than to check the AH once in a while, I see same chars putting in hundreds of stacks of ores or herbs at a silly low price every day. Every miner and herber can assure you that it takes a lot of time just to get those few stacks you need for your crafters.
Making it BoA from the start will make everyone happy as they can decide who they play.
Stopping botting and duping will make all honest players happy as now their own "harvest" is worth something again.
I implore you to consider making the spirits BoA from the start as this will ensure everyone can still play his/her favourite char/s while at the same time preventing the cheating with this obviously most important item.

Now that means that it drops off mobs that you loot and not from veins.

If the Spirit of Harmony can be gathered in unlimited amounts and easily gathered and useable without limit I'd be okay with them being BoP.
Still BoA would be better due to players being given a choice of what character to play on and not being forced to just chose the one with the right profession.
Sylvanas
Personally being an vanilla player I have had very mix feelings about this up coming expansion MoP or (kiddy WoW as I've seen it being called), to me wow has always been the challenge of lvling and gearing you're char, now it seems like everything is being handed to you on a plate.
I would like this see this new mat come in but at the same time is it really needed? Professions have remained the same since vanilla with few differences between vanilla to TBC to Lich and currently to Cata. So why change it now?
Kul Tiras
as explained above it is 'broken' people are just haning around in the auction house and gold farmers are having a great time. i think this is very interesting and we should give it a chance.
Hellscream
Would it be so bad to say "Damn, I'm 1 short to make this item - I know, I'll log over to my hunter and send it over"? Personally, I think not. The alternative is having to go and grind that missing piece whilst I know I have a perfectly good one on another character. Seems kinda annoying and pointless.
If they were BOA people would still be "out in the world gathering" just on their preferred character, instead of being forced to do it on the one they must.
TLDR:
BoP = No thanks
BoA = Yes please
Nagrand
Odd, as I said.

It all makes sense: people are bored of end game content, so many cannot be offered, however if you have a larget set of 85+ to enjoy them all, variety is presented. I always enjoy switching to an alt, and do stuff in another way.
And so, all the limits (daily, weekly caps) in all the systems (queues, quests) being character-bound don't serve anything else, but people to log alts for additional time. (Account-bound, they would serve the purpose of keeping players sane: no one should play (grind) so many hours a day/week.)
The Sha'tar
Most everyone? Almost by any chance?

Lesson one cater, never try to force feed.
I wish people stop pray to spreadsheets and look with empathy , what would they like , not how can we make it that... blahblah ..
I think overall B/A is doing much better than before with a little more empathy this game can even get over 12 million subs again ,more focus on how we keep them aboard than the little peanut cash grabs that are lower life expectations because you make your customers alienated and grumpy for a amount of cash that is not even worth a piece of candy if you compare it to long term sales...
Twilight's Hammer
And I think its a little ret@rded of Blizzard to kinda 'force' people into the world to farm goods. We paid for the game and every month that we play so we should have the right to play the game how we please. If people wana spend their lives leaching off the AH then thats their choice. If people love farming and in doing to making gold then let them. But now Blizzard is forcing people to farm if they wana get anywhere and whats worse we cant even make gold off the hard work. So do I support this idea.... Not really. But it wont stop me playing wow. All it will do is most likely drop more alts because now not only do I need to grind rep and dailies but now I have to grind for stup!d Spirit of blabla.
Kazzak
Todays system does it so that people who want can ebay gold and by that buy everything they need. This offers a new system where gold can't buy you everything and people actually have to put an effort into gaining something.
I do support the notion that people prefer different types of play, but that does not mean that both types of play with unequal amount of effort put into it should give the same benefit.
