Damage Done or DPS?

Dmg done.

if you ask me,dps only exists to show you how you're advancing on your gear, and it should only be that,in the dummy, stable damage,to see how much difference you have with different items, otherwise dps will be used as epeen meter and it will ruin you, making you look like a douche usually.
also damage done is not 100% what matters, for example one hybrid might have thrown a heal to someone to save him,but it still matters more than dps any time |

I dont think recount or any other damage meters are bad per se - it becomes bad when it is posted in teamchat.
the reason (my personal belief, not an universal truth by far) is that if you have X DPSers, who all want to be the topline DPS, they will switch a too high magnitude of their focus towards producing the highest dps/dmg done possible. instead of being aware of the tactile enviroment they are in and thats when stuff like; Adds, wipes, chaotic aggro starts to come into effect. besides as it has been noted before, theres more to it, than just dishing out huge numbers on mobs/bosses - often its better for the group if a dps sligthly decrease their dps/dmg done, and instead use stuff like; SAP, Poly, Counter, De-curse etc. in a group a Tank makes it all possible, a healer makes it go okay and the dpsers makes it go fast - but it is usualy faster to kill things slower than wipe ;) |

Damage Done > DPS.
Sometimes, Interrupts > DPS. But Recount doesn't track spells interrupted by stuns. Damage Taken > Damage Done. If said DPS is notable higher than all the other DPS in damage taken, something is wrong. |

A proper player has around 100% damage uptime on a bossfight so his damage done should be equal to his DPS x time
Both are useful stats if you know how to interpret them. |

Damage done all the way.

As a Warrior who pulls 68k dps on AoE in DS10 I want to say damage done for overall data, but really all that matters is DPS done to the boss. So DPS done on boss assuming all stayed alive. Gotta be modest here bro. If you AoE for 2x as much as you single target DPS it's because of class mechanics and you can't expect that to count in your favor because you can't even pull 30k on Ultixion. |
I've noticed alot recently that while in pug's people are linking DPS in groups after fights from recount. Get Skada instead of recount. It calculates dps over the duration of the fight instead of activity like recount does. |

When you see a ranged DPS standing in green/black/purple stuff for more than a few seconds, you know they're staring at recount.
As a healer it's really tempting to let them die :) |
When you see a ranged DPS standing in green/black/purple stuff for more than a few seconds, you know they're staring at recount. Nothing wrong with pushing your dps further if you know you cannot die with the time you give yourself. |

Dps and damage done should show the exact same results aslong as you use World of Logs or Skada, which use EFFECTIVE dps.
|
When you see a ranged DPS standing in green/black/purple stuff for more than a few seconds, you know they're staring at recount. If the healers are fine on mana, and you know you won't die, this is actually a good thing to do, since it pushes an extra bit of DPS which helps defeat the boss at hand. |
effective dps is recount dps. dps is damage done / time. |

Or a raidleader uses it to see who needs to improve.. This is only done by guilds who actaully care about progress though. |

always going to be damage done. An arcane mage could spam AB with all CDs popped and pull like 80K DPS then die and still be at that 80K but contribute nothing to the boss kill.
For me damage done all the way! |
When you see a ranged DPS standing in green/black/purple stuff for more than a few seconds, you know they're staring at recount. I have healed a few Cata Heroics and if there is mana left, the tank and the players have done a good job. There will always be differences between the tanks I had in different Heroic runs (some take much damage, and then is healing fun: tanks who are a bit undergeared, maybe new to Heroic tanking) and between the DPSers. Some are very well geared and have a DPS way beyond 20k, and some are new and do 5k or 6k DPS. Not a problem if the end result of the boss fight is, that the boss is dead. It may be a relation between my mana pool, my gear my healing experience with the total DPS. So if my mana pool goes up (because of better gear) the required total DPS before I go OOM, will go down. I am willing to carry poor DPSers through Cata Heroics. They don't have to be awesome, I want them to be social, respectful towards other players and me. But if you work on your rotation, and reforging it is okay. Gemming and enchanting is a later issue, IMO. If you gem or enchant a level 333 item which is soon to be replaced, because Heroic 4.0 bosses drop 346 item, it is actually a waste of gold. You can better spend it for level 378 and 397 items and up. |
