Retribution Paladin - Argéntus' PVP Guide

About the author: Argéntus, Guild Master of Victory of Light (www.victory-of-light.com), a PVE/PVP Guild. Originally from Mazrigos, recently moved to The Maelstrom to further improve the Guild's gaming experience (hence the name had to change from Argentus to Argéntus).
The aim of this thread: provide Retribution Paladins with the basic tools they need to succeed in PVP. I highlight it is but a Basic Guide, which will explain the early steps needed to improve your output / performance if you haven't already mastered them, or if you're new to PVP. The reason for this is even the great Retribution websites often omit the very basics for PVP, or focus on PVE specs, which can make it hard to find the information you need when starting out. I see plenty of complaints, but very few who have even specced correctly. This I hope will help you improve your gameplay and make you enjoy WoW again. I also point out that PVP is by definition fluid and reactive. You will refine your own playstyle as you improve. The glyphs / spec I use, may not be ideal for the way you play - but they should serve as a good starting point. Kindly only post here if you have helpful advice / your own insights to add (which I always appreciate). It is a basic guide and not aimed at those who already know what they're doing or have refined their own playstyle. Another more in-depth / expert guide that may be of use, particularly for Arena is found here: http://www.arenajunkies.com/showthread.php?t=231101 Hit & Expertise Caps - for PVP Hit Cap to 5%, Expertise to 8 (you will receive another 10 points when using Seal of Truth providing you Glyph correctly) You should always achieve these caps via reforging away haste or crit - NEVER gems. Not even +20 Strength / +20 Hit gems (unless there is a minimum +20 socket bonus). The reason: Strength is worth 5-7x as much per point as a Haste or Crit for your damage. If you gem for Hit you're nerfing yourself. Glyphs Prime Seal of Truth Templar's Verdict Word of Glory Major Hammer of Wrath Hammer of Justice Turn Evil - Instantly fear enemy DK / Warlock pets Gems Meta - Reverberating Shadowspirit Diamond (54 Strength, 3% increased Critical Damage). This is the current Best in Slot Meta Gem. Other Gems - Bold Inferno Ruby (40 Strength) - Strength; that is your absolute priority. It is your most valuable stat by far. The only exception should be where there is a socket bonus of some value; in which case use Steady Dream Emerald (20 Resilience / 30 Stamina) to achieve the bonus. If you gem correctly, your damage output will go way up. Post 4.0.6 - Strength actually marginally increases your survivability too - the Retribution talent Sacred Shield calcuates the value of that shield based on your Attack Power. 1 Strength point is worth 2 Attack Power - so every Strength gem you have will increase the strength of your shield. Simple. Enchants Make sure all your items are enchanted. If you don't know the Best in Slot enchantment for specific slots, Google it. Wherever you can enchant for Strength, do so. Take a look at my enchants if you need an idea of what they should look like. Build This is really down to personal preference and playstyle. If you have seen the guide above, you will know that as Ret you can either talent into Holy or Protection with your spare points. Both are viable. In 4.0.6 and in order to increase team-mate survivability I opted to talent into the extra healing abilities. Post 4.1, with the Word of Glory nerf (it became an ability with a 20 second cooldown), I talented into the Protection tree to provide a lower cooldown on Hammer of Justice (40 seconds vs 1 minute). You may see my talent tree with a point in Divine Storm. This is purely for RBG purposes and is no use in Arena, where that point can be put back into selfless healer (2 points total). Do not put any points into Eye for an Eye - it may look like a PVP talent but it's not. The higher resilience you have, the less damage you take. So a small chance of reflecting a small percentage of the damage you take is not worth it. My Build: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/the-maelstrom/arg</a>éntus/talent/secondary |

Key-Binds
1 = Judgement 2 = Crusader Strike 3 = Templars Verdict 4 = Exorcism W, A, S, D = Movement keys E = Rebuke (melee range interrupt) Shift + E = Focus Rebuke R = Repentance (use as a ranged interrupt) Shift + R = Focus Repentance (uses repentance on your focus target without having to select them manually - e.g. the enemy healer, to enable you to burst down another target or force the use of their trinket so they can be cc'd again by your partners) F = Hammer of Wrath G = Macro (see below) X = Hammer of Justice (stun) Shift + X = Focus Hammer of Jusice The rest of the filler abilities are buttons 5 upwards Macros Not a big user of these, but there is one you should all have: #showtooltip /cast Zealotry /cast Avenging Wrath /cast Inquisition /startattack Or alternatively if you have Bloodthirsty / Vicious Gladiator's Badge of Victory (use: increase strength - N.B. use 14 means it is in the bottom of the two trinket slots - Thanks to Peakie / Rivril below for highlighting this idea - tested and works) #showtooltip /cast Zealotry /cast Avenging Wrath /cast Inquisition /use 14 /startattack Use it as soon as your ready for your burst damage output. Hit this then the rotation is: Hammer of Wrath, Crusader Strike, Templar's Verdict and repeat. Hit Exorcism anytime it procs. Use it combined with your stun and unless they have their Trinket ready, they're pretty much going down. Even better if your Arena / BG partner has a stun ready too. The burst damage output here can be increased even further if the Macro is used approximately 5-10 seconds after using Guardian of Ancient Kings (as once used, your combined attacks stack to increase your strength). PVP Add-ons Healbot (LMB [Left Mouse Button] - Flash of Light, MMB - Cleanse, RMB - Word of Glory, Shift & LMB - Hand of Sacrifice, Shift & Middle - Hand of Freedom, Shift & RMB - Hand of Protection) Healers Have to Die Spellalerter Gladius Killshots (just for fun ^^) General Utility / Advice You all know your main attacks and how / when to use them. You may not have mastered some other huge assets you have at your disposal: Divine Protection - Reduce damage taken by 20%. Use it when under heavy attack. Hand of Freedom - Use it any time you are rooted etc. If this is on CD, cleanse yourself (I have cleanse as my middle mouse button click on Healbot) Hand of Sacrifice - Use it on a partner who is either under heavy attack, or if an enemy is casting a CC on you such as Polymorph / Hex. As soon as they switch and start attacking your partner post CCing you, this will break the CC and negate the need for you to use your trinket. Hand of Protection - Use it on anyone under heavy melee attack; this is particularly key for Healers getting targetted (with the exception of Holy Paladins, who can bubble themselves) I don't claim to be the best PVPer out there, but I know what I'm doing. I hope the above provides some very basic but very useful advice to Retribution PVPers who may not understand the pecularities of the class. If you have more specific questions, please ask. As stated above; don't QQ here about Ret being broken, there are plenty of other posts for that. Bump if you like this / found it helpful so others can read it too /Salute Retribution FTW |

Awesome guide mate,
I have one thing to contribute with, that i have done. Im using following macro, and that works for me: /use 14 (my pvp trinket, it has same 2 min CD as the Avenging Wrath (gives 1520 Str)) /cast Avenging Wrath /cast Inquisition (you have to have 1 holy power up) After that I spam Hammer of Wrath.. Im still gearing up, so i havent really done any reforging myself or anything yet.... I got a question for you thou: What is the best pvp Enchant for my new 2H mace (arena), if I cant afford landslide... Should i go with Berserking or?? |
|
|
Nice guide.
You may consider adding /cast Hand of Salvation to your 'Avenging Wrath' Macro for extra trash buff. Also Galadiator's Badge of Victory trinket - guaranted 1500+ Strenght for 20 seconds when bursting with Avenging Wrath. |

My ret build is awesome for survival and off healing your dps partners. Shorter stun is a must to be honest.

WHY YOU PPL KEEP STACKING STR !!!! srsly you need to be @##!ing brain dead not to see that mastery is the main stat for items and gems its hit>master>str>haste>crit

This is amazing sat here at work (shhhh) thinking what can I do to increase performance in PVP BG (that I have only just started) quick search and there is an amazing guide just been posted. Now I have a game plan!
Off to figure out quite what all those terms mean in your guide - before that I was just out looking for a bigger sword and a better rotation. Thanks again. |
Strenght is a RELIABLE dps increase. Mastery on the other hand IS NOT! That's why most use strenght and not mastery... |

Hmm... Why are you using Glyph of Exorcism? Doesn't it break repentance?

There is non PvP with a Retribution.

My primary use of repentance is as a ranged interrupt; though also on whoever I am not currently targetting - so Exorcism's DoT from this isn't a problem. Though I do hear you. WHY YOU PPL KEEP STACKING STR !!!! srsly you need to be @##!ing brain dead not to see that mastery is the main stat for items and gems its hit>master>str>haste>crit I am not going to dignify this with a response. I asked people not to QQ, and I asked for constructive thoughts. Not nonsense. But please do gem for as much Hit as you can manage ^^ You may consider adding /cast Hand of Salvation to your 'Avenging Wrath' Macro for extra trash buff. I like it. Will test compatability later
Beserking & Hurricane both viable (the former actually small better) before Landslide. Cheers guys. |

Cheers. :) Beserking & Hurricane both viable (the former actually small better) before Landslide. What about the weapon chain? Was more or less thinking about getting that one instead of one of the others. |
|
|
Pyrium Weapon Chain is good and a lot use it - though I'm not often disarmed to be honest and prefer the extra damage output from the other enchants. |
|
|
Oh thanks for the Sticky ^^ which nice chap did that?! Now I guess I had better continually update it :p
