How would it be like if Blizzard could open up a Classic WoW realm?

I know it's quite hard to open up a Classic WoW realm, as Blizzard has changed a lot, yes, but it would make all those players that quited WoW before TBC got out, maybe they would start playing again, hopefully.

Though, I think Blizzard wish to grow bigger and bigger, but let their players to refresh their old memories isn't the baddest idea. :)

All those people I've been asking if they would appreciate a Classic realm has said YES to it.

So what does Blizzard think about this suggestion? What does the players think about this suggestion?

did you try that search on the old forums? or just the new ones?

blizzard have said no and i recal them giving a rather compelling technincal reason for it never happening as well at least once.

so i run a server i have a client that i always update and write on top of i don't remove old client and start again every patch, several years later a customer comes to me and asks for the old server client to be reused...oddly i say i'm sorry it doesn't exist anymore i patch the server client and don't keep the old versions of it, he asks me why, i ask him why i should rewrite a server client for every patch.....he says oh right maybe just a bit to much work.

in short vanilla's server client does not exist at least not the way you think it does.

while they may keep a backup server for short period of time in case a patched server client doesn't work i doubt and i do mean seriously doubt they have kept the original, for example they may have 4.03 server clients on backup right now but nothing before that while 4.0.6 is out now, as 4.1 comes out they will retain a backup of 4.0.6 for a short period untill 4.1 proves it's self as being stable, after that there is no reason to retain the old client.

no they can't port it from the game client that is a totally different client entirely.

Classic realm(s)?

Yes, please.

However, this has been suggested like 10.000 times now, and Blizzard has stated that they have no intention on opening a classic realm. Yet, people keep on asking for this. Hmm, maybe that's with a reason...?

I myself would LOVE to see this happen, but sadly enough this is very unlikely to happen.

This is correct.

Since the old forums are no longer available, I will re-post one of the comments we posted on this topic in the past:

We are aware of the fact that some people prefer the old pre-expansion content over the newer content that has been added to the game with the last two expansions, but despite this we still have no plans for opening any classic realms at this point in time.

We also understand that some people would like to revel in nostalgia; however the developers are planning to keep the game moving forward as they want the game to continue to progress and evolve.

We regularly see requests for us to open classic pre-TBC realms, or vanilla realms if you prefer, and lately we have also seen requests for pre-WotLK realms and even pre-Cataclysm realms. We have answered requests like these before saying that we have no plans to open such realms, and this is very much still the case today.

We realize that some of you feel that World of Warcraft was more fun in the past than it is today, and we also know that some of you would like nothing more than to go back and play the game as it was back then. The developers however prefer to see the game continuously evolve and progress, and as such we have no plans to open classic realms or limited expansion content realms.

How about stickying this answer at the top of the forums with the title all in caps so no one can be excused for missing it? Then we can easily link to the stickied answer every time someone posts one of these poorly thought through, nostalgic, rose tinted glasses, requests.

I'm pretty sure it also has to do with the huge amount of extra work for Blizzard developers.

As you would basically create 2 or more versions of 1 game, and each needs to be patched differently.
If you're going to make vanilla servers then people expect blizzard to balance say, pvp around lvl 60..

If there would be vanilla server, how long will it take before people cry for more content for lvl 60 players?

Many reasons to not have vanilla servers.

I think it has a lot to do with players not *actually* wanting to play vanilla servers.
They believe they do, but they actually miss the feeling of playing something that felt new.

Expansions feels like "more of the same". New instances are refreshing for roughly 2 runs. As such, they don't quite satisfy the feeling of being new.

However, a vanilla realm today would feel downright old.

People have fond memories of their early days. That doesn't mean reliving them with 6 years of experience won't be filled with the same issues you're hating on Cataclysm for.

40-people raids is the only thing that's been truly lost.

The players that quit before TBC, left while Vanilla was current. They're not gonna come back to play Vanilla.
